Nintendo Ending Wi-Fi Connection Worldwide on May 20th

All mostly first party, right? I would be devastated if the MegaMan Starforce games and Rock Band 3 closed their servers. These are things you can never get back ever!

This is too soon, Nintendo :(, but I guess this is for the good. They need to use all those online resources now to power MK8 and Smash 4 both for Wii U and 3DS. MK Wii is a total mess now anyways because it's full of cheaters and glitches and matches are not fun anymore because of that.

I wonder if this means Smash is coming out sooner than expected too?

Can't expect a significant online community migration on one game and span it for several months until another online heavy multiplayer game.

There've been strides for console games (I half expect the vast majority of Wiis in the next few years that are actively used will be homebrew'd) but yeah, PC's simply the easiest to deal with. Ultima Online may well outlive every other MMO for this reason alone whether or not EA ever shut down the official servers.

Hell, we've had dead games like Star Wars Galaxies come back to life purely through reverse engineering efforts. That's impressive!

This is 9 days before Mario Kart 8 comes out. It certainly appears very timed to encourage people still playing MKW online to make the jump over to the supported system.

If that was the case, they'd just be shutting off Mario Kart Wii, not every single Wii and DS game.

I'm not saying there's no relation between the two, but it may be a more practical move, ie: Mario Kart 8 --> a lot of new Nintendo Network users -> Time to start really up the number of Nintendo Network servers --> time to shut down NWC and repurpose those resources.

Damn, knew this would happened eventually but didn't expect it this soon.

Anyway, I hope someone has archives for all the online-only content for the affected games. Would hate to pick up a new DS title and have a significant portion of the game be locked out due to the servers being down.

Man. I remember purchasing The Dongle so I could play Mario Kart DS. It seemed mindblowing to actually be playing Nintendo games online after the GameCube era.

I'd seek out McDonald's with Nintendo Wi-Fi connections, order something token, and sit there for an hour or more playing Mario Kart DS. Gotta remember to download all the books that can fit in 100 Classic Books. Think I've already got all the download unlock keys for Layton and DQIX to get all that stuff. Amazing that it's ending, though, I guess it was all-or-nothing to kill it before MK8 came out. :(

If that's the case then this is a really scummy move by Nintendo. Shutting down the online for EVERY Wii and DS game just so they can motivate a couple people to upgrade to their newer systems. The sad thing is that Mario Kart 7 and 8 will likely never have as big of an online community as Mario Kart DS and Wii.

at first i was like "man this sucks" but then, when i started thinking about it, i haven't played a single online game from last gen in over a year. the last time i used wifi on these old games was pokemon black and white 2 due to the competitions and the dream world but the dream world was shut down already and they don't hold competitions anymore over wfc.

i guess it sucks for people who were late to the party but for those that were there on time and moved on already, it's no big deal.

this also sets a bad precedent. we can now expect Wii U and 3DS to go offline midway into their sucessor's lifecycles.

How does Poke bank work with the DS games?

And by how does it work I mean how do people transfer from the DS games to the bank?

I don't see FF: My Life as a King, which presumably means that pay DLC services are not being pulled

Wii DLC is probably connected to the Wii shop channel, which is staying up, so yeah, it's probably fine... for now at least. Hopefully.

Downloadable stuff in DS games, however, is Wi-Fi Connection, and that stuff will all die with this shutdown, as some people have pointed out (Picross DS and Picross 3D, etc.).

This news is huge. No more getting destroyed in Tetris DS, snaking in Mario Kart DS will be no more, all the time I spent in Metroid Prime Hunters will be just memory, Clubhouse games will be pretty bad from now on and all the downloadable puzzles for Picross and Professor Layton. Even the Pokemon stuff that you can do anymore.

I held the DS with high praise because it can go online in addition to the base game but now that will be gone.

Probably an overreaction but still. I'll miss it.

This is the worst news all year.

Shall we compile a list of games with downloadable levels?

Professor Layton games
Warioware DIY
Jam With The Band/Diagasso! Band Brothers DX
Picross

Wow wait the Pokemon games too? So you can't battle online or just the GTS? This is still huge news though :/

Yeah isn't this kind of a big deal since it means you essentially have under 3 months before you can't get stuff off of Heart Gold/Soul Silver anymore since they don't work with Poke Transporter for some reason. It would soften the blow a bit if they can patch it in, but it's Nintendo so that will never ever happen.

One of the worst trends of this generation of gaming is the ability for these things to shut down and become unusable.

I know it occasionally happened before this, but for an entire service to just shut off when I can still find active servers for 10+ year old PC games is absurd, frustrating, and annoying.

Totally forgot about both the Wariowares, gotta get to downloading there too. Also according to the list Contact on DS has online features too? Somebody tell me they're completely disposable, man, reshuffling my backlog priorities is annoying.

Well 3DS and WiiU use the Nintendo Network, so wouldnt it be more akin to Xbox original being disconnected from Live, giving them a much longer lifespan?

EDIT: Phantasy Star 0 Gaf was awesome.

Wow. All online leaderboards will be toast in May for Wii/DS. That stings.

Counting the titles on that North America list, that's more than 400 games across the Wii/DS libraries that will be affected. That's not an insignificant number.

DS titles coming to Wii U VC bring up the interesting question of whether they'll work with the Nintendo Network, or if those features will simply not work in the VC versions.
