Best DiRT game?

Been playing Forza Horizon lately, the offroad races have me itching for a rally game, now!

The more offroad/rally stuff, the better, imo, so... which DiRT sits at the top?

It seems most people favor either 2 or 3, what's GAF's take on it?

they are soooo cheap, get them all. dirt 1 controls a bit wonky and the engine performance wasnt quite there but it has the most, the longest, and the best rally stuff. dirt 2 and 3 are about equal IMO, with each having less rally, shorter rally, and better controls. my favorite is 1, but i'm not sure i could recommend it simply based on the twitchy feel. again though, i'd recommend all three for the most variety of tracks and environments.

also, if you havent, the rall dlc for horizon is fucking terrific. its still a bit on the expensive side, but i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED it.

I'm reading alot of complaints regarding 2's lack of rally/offroad races, comparatively... that'd be a negative, in my book.

The second one had a great atmosphere to it, and I loved the soundtrack. Although the same could be said for 3. I enjoyed 2 more though. Not only was it a solid game but its presentation reminded me of Burnout 3. Codemasters always seem to nail a sense of style with the menu and flow.

I'll definitely check it out, thanks. ^^

Two is an amazing game. It's one of my favorite Codemasters games alongside the GRID series and F1.

I also just really like the transitions alot from race back to the trailer. It's really awesome especially with the music that plays.

My favorite song from the Dirt 2 soundtrack.

Is 2 that lacking on the offroad/rally front, though? I mean, if it has more content I'm always more inclined towards it, but if it a significant amount of it isn't offroad stuff, I'll probably go for 3.

2 but i have played 3 a lot and once you get the hang of it those Gymkana races can actually be a lot of fun. Still prefer rally though!

Haven't played Showdown, but 2 is my favorite of the other three. It's got a great atmosphere, well-laid out and enjoyable career mode and fantastic presentation.

3 just made me angry. "YO DUDE THAT WAS SICK POST THAT ON YOUTUBE" every god damn race.

For rallying which is all I play these games for...

1 > 2 > 3. I do like 2 a lot though, so I'm not sure if I put it below 1 or not.

I preferred 2 over them all. Completely caught me by surprise when i borrowed from my brother years ago (I think it was over the holiday break back in 09). I would easily put it up there as one of the best racing games of all time. The first is also fantastic, but its not as polished and fun as Dirt 2's drifty controls. The third is about exactly the same as 2, and then some. But i think thats why it didn't stick with me as 2 did. It felt the same and added the "freestyle" Gymkhana stuff. I just like racing, so i choose 2 over the rest.

The rally races are my favorite aspect of this series but I love almost all of the different event types. One of the best racing series' of all time, in my opinion, just a perfect mixture of arcade and simulation.

The original DiRT was actually the first game I bought for my PS3 back in 2007. I would rank them 2 > 3 > 1. You can't go wrong with any of those three.

Only played 2 and 3, and preferred DiRT 2 over 3 by far. Game was really a blast, and I still go back and play it once in a while.

The second one was very good, I even got the platinum for it.
I also have the third one but somehow I just couldn't get into that game.

The first one. Looked, felt and played more like a rally game; the other classes broke up the action a bit and were good side classes to compliment the rally aspects of the game.

Then it went to shit with the never ending wails of Pastrana and Block. Get that shit and their bullshit youtube events and antics out of the game and the series is actually quite good. If they ever drop the dudebro element from the game I will jump at another sequel, but if they keep going with this 'totally awesome bro' shitfest then count me out.

There's a fair amount of rally and off road courses. Most of the modes use a mix of asphalt and dirt for the courses but you're not on asphalt for long anyway before you're back on the dirt again for a majority of the race. Rally, Baja, and all the other modes typically are off road that I can remember.

while i wasnt a huge fan of the gymkhana stuff, i did have a lot of fun in the industrial rally park free roam stuff in dirt 3. lots of fun searching out the hidden stuff and just honing your hooning ;)

also, again, probably a bit expensive, but the monte carlo dlc for dirt 3 was also a fantastic addition.

1 >> 2 >>> 3 >>>>> Showdown

Unfortunately it got worse and worse, saying that though the first two are still great and the third is alright.

Ok, just bought 2. Depending on how much I like I'll give the other 2 a spin, too, later. ^^

Thanks, GAF!

First one, easily. Has variety in rally tracks and throws in a bunch of other fun actually rally related things (Rally Raid), and no annoying dudebro host in sight. You can also get an OG Xbox and buy Rallisport Challenge 2 and experience the superior game that inspired DiRT to be. It doesn't work on 360 BC, so yes buying a OG Xbox is needed.

Stap, get the first one. Seriously.

Repeat after me: DiRT: Showdown does not exist, DiRT: Showdown does not exist, DiRT: Showdown does not exist... You can fell yourself getting veeeeeeeeeery sleeeeeeeeepy.

MS should really think about giving us a HD port of rsc2. such an amazing game. would probably look pretty great in a higher resolution too. i'm sad i have no way to play it again (OG xbox broke a loooong time ago)

Dirt 2. Dirt 3 felt like a downgrade for me. It was also a lot less focused on rally races and heavy on traditional circuit racing from what i remember, didn't bother with the new ones.

2>1>3

1 may have good rallying but it had the worst overall event with the truck racing, which is just mind numbing. 2 has a great balance between rally & normal racing. 3 is so bro-ified its sickening, tho there is fun to be had, and it has a fantastic soundtrack. Theyre all good games really.

The first one's much harder to get than 2 or 3, for the PC. Plus, for ÂŁ3, I don't think I'll regret buying 2, lol. And if I like 2, I'll definitely be checking 1 out, don't worry.

Also, my OG XBOX is tucked away quite far away from me, so sadly... I can't, for now.

And due to license hell, and maybe lack of source code it will never come to be :<

Dirt 1 by far. Great rally stages, great vibe.

Hated the X-Games shit in 2. Hated Gymkhana and the extremely short rally stages (less then a minute often) in 3.

Having played all the Dirt games in the past (except Showdown of course), I recently re-bought Dirt 1 because I wanted some Dirt in my life again.

Dirt 1 was the best, it had the longest rally stages. However some of the water/rain effects and locations for rally stages in Dirt 2 and 3 are great, though far too short.

I agree.

Also 2>>3. 1 was a long time ago, I remember it being a better Rally game, longer courses, etc.

Colin McRae Rally 2005

What are these DiRT games you are all talking about?*

* refuses to aknowedlege they exist

Agreed.

If you have to play DiRT then the 2nd one its the most fun, if you want to play a rally game then Colin McRae Rally 2005 or even CMR04 are the ways to go.

Dirt 2 stands out the best for me. I liked the selection of events and tracks the most. Number 3 had too many 'gnarly' events for my liking.

2>3>1, although you can't go that wrong with any of them. 1 has a really good selection of much longer real world hill climb and rally stages than either of its sequels, but doesn't control as well as either of them. Dirt 2 has fantastic presentation to it, is very pretty and has a great soundtrack, and the handling feels a bit looser than 3 which makes it maybe less realistic but gives it a better sense of speed. Track variety isn't all there, though, compared to 1 or 3. 3 controls the most realistically and looks best, but has less content than 1 or 2 and constantly bugs you to buy its DLC in the menus, plus the presentation is a lot more grating than 2's.

1 is excellent but 2 is really the best one. 3 felt like a return to form of 1, and it's very good as well, stay completely away from showdown though.

It's a tough choice between Dirt 1 & 2 for a few reasons. Dirt 1 has the best car and track selection of the series, no contest. But Dirt 2 is much more fun to actually drive and race in IMHO. The handling and graphical improvements of Dirt 2 over Dirt 1 just makes it more fun for me to play. I wish I could get the content of Dirt 1 in the Dirt 2 game engine, that would be the absolute best rally game of all time.

Dirt 3 I don't care for, all of that gymkata stuff was stupid to me. I want to play a rally game, not a mixture of various genres. Make a separate gymkata game and keep the Dirt series in the dirt please.

For me, 2 > 1 >>>>>>>> 3.

Get one of the excellent Colin McRae games instead of the shitty Ken Block's DIRT games.

I like Colin McRae Rally 2.0 the most.
