Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

Fuck off, Facebook!

What I don;t get is why facebook of all companies, interested in the oculus rift? wha?

Maybe they feared google would acquire them to further their google glass research?

I mean, this is how these deals seem to go down. One big tech firm outbids the oter for something they don't need to stop the other company from getting it. How any of this is a viable business policy is beyond me, but maybe tha's why I'm not a billionaire...

I really can't see the benefit for facebook, at least in their facebook activity.. Facebook's future is to be on people's watches, clothes etc.. They want to make it invisible and inherent to people, not.. to ask them to put something on their head to use it..

Now it can be a reallllly long term shot here maybe.. But it has to be some kind of diversification right.

Not exactly sure how to feel yet.. seems like an odd match.
But this does mean VR is going to be mainstream, which means more developer support.

oculus has an idea and a preliminary product

instagram has tens of millions of users, as did whatsapp (which is what you're thinking of)
You're completely right. It just feels wrong, you know? Oculus is possibly staring at the advent of a new sustainable medium. Instagram was just... pictures. Sure they had the users, but the implications of this buy.... I can't even put into words how massive this just became.

VR (as a common medium) just became incredibly more viable for the common man, with FB's funding and subsidizing. But say goodbye to that gaming focus. On one hand, I'm incredibly excited about what this means for our future. But, on the other hand, I'm sad that gaming will no longer lead the charge.

So... why exactly are people hating on this? Outside from being associated with Facebook (who itself has casual games that GAF may not approve of)... I'm not seeing any legit reasons.

Yeah, me neither. It just means Oculus Rift now has more funds backing it. We don't know the details of the purchase though, so it is safe to panic still.

I bet this is exactly what ground level Kickstarter backers were hoping for when they got on board the Oculus VR train at the very beginning. Sold to Facebook for $2b before even making it to market. I guess that's a pretty big Kickstarter success story for Oculus, not so much for the backers.

Unbelievably low price. I feel kind of bad for the folks over at OR. They surely know a lot about tech and ideas, but little about their business.
Unless Sony somehow crushes their product or they fuck it all up themselves, it's going to be worth a lot more than that in a few years.

Interesting. I don't think this is a bad thing. $2 billion seems cheap to me. I wonder what their price would have been if Morpheus didn't happen?

Every young tech entrepreneur should make an altar dedicated to Zuckerberg and pray for him to try to buy their company.

2bn for that is simply insane.

The only time I have ever said "Fuck" out loud when I saw a bad gaming headline.

Money is the priority, but damn they sold out. Not even the original vision anymore.

I'm done.

Seems like they could of developed their own from scratch for a lot less than $2 billion.

With more than one player in the VR market now I'm going to guess the IP is worth it and potentially cheaper than starting over while being years behind the others.
