Advance Wars |OT| What's an airport? (Wii U VC)

I love the two DS advance wars to bits, so I should really go back and play this. Just worried that it'll be a simpler version of what came later, though.

This is precisely why the original hasn't been bested it. The games who came later added too much bloat without making it more engaging. The map design in the original is just out of this world. You think you've experienced fog of war, but you ain't seen nothing yet. One of my favourite feature is the branching mission structure. During various points in the game, you get to choose between the OS COs and each has their own map to conquer. Choosing which CO to use will have consequences later on in the game. I love branching game structures because it increases the replay value by so much.

Not much else to say except enjoy!

Definitely agree with this. The sequels are still great, but the original Advance Wars is one of those rare games that the developers just nailed on the first try. Any further tinkering to the gameplay just makes it... Less good.

Isn't Days of Ruin the worst AW game? I know they went with a different look, which I personally didn't find appealing.

No, it's the strongest AW mechanically. People were just turned off my the dark setting and style.

Personally, I agree that the original charming style for AW was what was known and what I grew up with so I love it and would like to see it again considering the witty writing that came with it, but I never disliked the darker style. In fact I thought it was really good and I really enjoyed the storyt.

Still don't get Days of Ruin. Sucked all of the fun from the series. Had they just had AWDS2, I bet it would have sold better.

Because the WiiU is sinking and they want people to buy it? I mean if you're a huge AW fan, this might finally make you buy a WiiU along with everything else.

I don't think a relatively obscure virtual console release of a portable game will increase Wii U sales. So that logic goes out the window. I am a huge AW fan, but I'm not going to drop $250 on a Wii U or however much it costs to play a game I've already owned in the past on the GBA.

Just another very puzzling decision by Nintendo. Here is to hoping a real AW sequel is coming for the 3ds. I'm one of the few AW fans that loved DOR, wouldn't mind another AW in that style.

All I remember about Days of Ruin was stalemates. Stalemates everywhere.

Sure, Dual Strike went over the top with powers, but at the same time they ensured that either you could finish a map quickly or you'd get wrecked quickly.

You missed his point. No one would buy a Wii U for a GBA port. However, the idea is that it increases the value, alongside all of the other things you might want for it.

Yeah, I hear people saying the mechanics were great, but after putting 100+ hours into DS, I don't think I put 10 into Days of Ruin before never touching it again. It just wasn't fun, for me.

Anyway, having only played the DS entries, should there be any problems going back to the GBA version? Looking at the OT, everything seems pretty familiar.

No, I didn't miss his point. You apparently missed mine though. A release of a relatively obscure strategy title from an ancient hand held onto a home console that has a pathetic user base is poor strategy from Nintendo. Why would you release it on the under performing console that all but the hardest core Nintendo fans consider to be still born, but not put a handheld title on the handheld console they already have that is actually selling well enough. Where is the logic?

I do agree it increases the Wii U's value if only very, very marginally so. It makes far more sense to put it on the 3ds, you know, that newish handheld from Nintendo that is selling far, far more than the Wii U?

But then again, that would be the smart thing to do and this is Nintendo we are talking about here. As others have stated already, here is to hoping for a new 3ds AW's title.

I loved the gameplay of this game so much. The dialog and story however was unbearable and never went anywhere. Not sure if the sequels had actual stories because I wasted so much time reading small talk dialog in the first one I just skipped it all in sequels. Dialog was always something like this:

Character 1: Oh No.

Evil Character: Ha Ha. I will get you.

Character 1: No you will not.

Evil Character: Ha Ha. Yes I will.

Character 1: You can't get me.

Evil Character: Ha Ha. I will destroy you.

Character 1: Not this time.

Evil Character: Ha Ha. You will be destroyed.

Repeat 10 times.

Are you sure you didn't confuse it with Golden Sun? There isn't an evil entity in the original AW anyway.

Sturm will crush you!

Completely agreed. Once again this is just Nintendo proving how inept they are. No reason GBA games can't be released on the 3DS. No, let's release this old handheld game on a console instead. No one is going to be drawn to the Wii U because they can play a few GBA games on it.

The Hawke arc is pretty damn good - he goes from being Sturm's second in command in Advance Wars to (Advance Wars 2 ending spoilers)
betraying and killing him, at which point Black Hole flee from Macro Land.

After that, (Advance Wars Dual Strike spoilers)
Hawke and Lash are part of the Black Hole army in Omega Land, but are betrayed by Von Bolt after they discover his plan to drain the energy of Omega Land so he can remain immortal.

This released on September 11th (the 9/10/01 mentioned in the beginning of the topic was the ship date).

I had two jobs at the time. Telemarketing in the morning and Gamestop at night. I went into my first job excited to pick up Advance Wars that night. Of course, that excitement lasted all of 45 minutes when our boss told us about the terrorist attacks. I watched TV in the breakroom for a few minutes before heading home. When I got home, there was a message from Gamestop saying that the mall was closed and I wouldn't have to come into work. Couple more hours of watching TV. Finally, I couldn't handle it anymore and decided to see if any stores were open. I was going to buy Advance Wars because I'm an American, damnit! I MUST CONSUME!!!

I will always be thankful for Toys 'R Us.

FINALLY an OT about one of the best handheld games of all time, thank you so much for doing this! This game deserves way more exposure, c'mon Intelligent Systems, where's Advance Wars 3DS?!

I spent SOOOOO much time playing the Advance Wars series, the controls are hardwired muscle memory now. I still have the original Advance Wars cartridge my parents got me for my 9th birthday in October 2001, with my original save files and everything. I bought all the Advance Wars series entries since then, have 300+ hours logged into Dual Strike alone. My favourite moment in the series was beating Spann Island in the War Room in 8 days/turns, S rank, with Rachel in DS. My personal favourite CO's to use are Kanbei, Max and Nell in the first three entries, and Tasha in Days of Ruin.

I HIGHLY recommend this game and the entire series (Advance Wars 2, AW: Dual Strike, AW: Days of Ruin). It's flawless. Great AI, great unit design, great map design (even comes with a map builder!), great character design, GREAT campaign, FLAWLESS MUSIC (the character themes are amazing and fits each of them perfectly), perfectly balanced, IT'S ALL GOOD. If you like turn-based strategy, hell, strategy period, THIS IS IT.

I even tried to model the Yellow Comet medium tank unit in CAD last year during my 2nd year, as a practice project. It's my avatar!

one of the best portable games ever

wouldnt make much sense to me on Wii U VC, but game is awesome

Man, i've been looking for something like this for AGES, will try

You will have a hard time dealing with "real" opponents. You'll need to adapt your game for sure.

The site is slowly going down, so don't get to much involved or get involved and help to regain the old quality (which has dropped since amarriner moved on). The site hat a big crash for one week at the end of january and is now "back", but nobody knows how long. But still, the site is awesome! Especially the maps are really, really great. You can copy some of the league maps for local play for example.

Kind of a raw deal that Japan is getting 1+2 but everywhere else is only getting 1 and maybe 2 somewhere down the line separately.
I don't think Japan ever got a non-compilation release. It would be nice if Advance Wars 2 buyers got a discount for buying the first one, though I'm not expecting it.

Goddamn, is that a 3D model and schematic in your album?! I know you said you wouldn't try to make profit off it but hell, I'm sure some people would pay for unofficial fan models of Advance Wars stuff - I know I would!

Still don't get Days of Ruin. Sucked all of the fun from the series. Had they just had AWDS2, I bet it would have sold better.

There was a MASSIVE difficulty spike on level 14 that made a lot of people quit the game. I don't think I've ever seen so many walkthroughs and questions about 1 specific level before. I didn't even beat it myself, but I also suck at these games (despite my love for them) so that doesn't really say anything.

This is great work! You know you could make a fortune if you could somehow manage to make this into a figurine or something, right?

It's a shame but Japan never got a separate version of AW1, and Nintendo seem pretty committed to re-releasing what originally came out in each region, up to and including shitty 50Hz versions...

Great OT!

I'd just like to point out that Eagle's CO power only lets non-infantry units move again, and Sami's transport units have +1 movement.

As an aside, I wouldn't really say that Sami's units are weaker than Andy. Despite having a slight drop in direct units (which is honestly pretty inconsequential), she's one of the most powerful COs in the game because she boosts infantry (ie: the most important units in the game). That +20 might seem amazing, but it's really the +10 def that makes her a monster. Since it's a universal defense boost, it can make her infantry units deceptively hard to kill. Her Mechs in particular are insane (and if she builds enough of them she can swarm pretty easily)

GBA games can't be emulated on the 3DS natively. The GBA ambassador games run in DS mode. All 3DS features are disabled and lack the features VC games have, like save states. Nintendo doesn't want to release GBA VC games commercially this way.

I feel like we need a topic explaining this show people stop bringing it up.

On topic. Never got to try the GBA Advance Wars games. I have only played the DS ones. I am looking forward to predecessors.

This is one of my all-time favorite games. I still play the GBA version before bed a few times a week. I recently made some friends who are into the game, too, and we've been meeting up about once a month to play. It's so fun.

An absolutely amazing game.

I S-ranked the hard campaign on Advance Wars and Advance Wars: BHR. It's one of the few games that I consider myself to be actually really good at.

Thanks! The model's nowhere near ready for manufacturing though, a usable schematic would need a bunch of measurements and some other tuning, although I intended it to be a 3D-printable figurine... not too sure about the laws regarding selling unofficial stuff, don't want Nintendo legally suplexing me o_o

I was always thinking of putting the model up on some 3D-printers' forum to let someone else see what they could do with it though

Guys, there's a bunch of other threads to critize Nintendo's overall VC policy. This thread is for Advance wars.

Such a shame this will be released without multiplayer support.
The first Advance Wars game with online multiplayer would be GLORIOUS.

I'll buy it anyways, since it's my favorite Nintendo franchise!

That's probably part of it. I think I forced myself to the end because I like the series. My problems with DoR

- Overly serious tone for a series known for its goofy/colorful characters
- CO powers used to be able to bail out poor strategic choices, but they took so long to charge up in DoR, and when used, they weren't as effective as regular CO powers.
- Had online play, but the more fun DS did not
