Phil Spencer named Head of Xbox

Good luck, Phil. He's got an uphill battle in getting me to buy an XB1 at this stage, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the table.

fantastic move.

he has a hard job ahead of him this generation, but this gives me great hope for the next-generation of Xbox, and the future of the brand in general.

congratulations Phil!

Drop the price/Kinect.
Fund a load of high quality MS exclusives.
Makes games for gold better.

Turn the ship around! lol

People are weird. Just at a glace I saw 3 people in that thread that had a negative comment and are now commenting positively. Make up your fucking minds... oh wait, you fall victim to hive mentality.
Heh, and I see some based off just his appearance. I guess I'm not wholly innocent there as for some reason he reminds me of Agent Smith... but I doubt "you remind me of Hugo Weaving!" is exactly a terrible thing to say to many people, haha.

He does sound like a good fit for the job though and hopefully that works out well for everyone.

Great news, finally someone in charge who gets it.

This bodes well for a short lifecycle for Xbone and for MS to release a worthy successor to the 360.

Until that time, games will at least get the attention they deserve in the MS camp.

I was like that too suspect on his gamership but when he said Ultima Online was one of his favorite games and specifically refered to the untouch version of it, there was no question that he's actually a hardcore gamer

Ultima isn't something someone casually plays lol

Where did he say this? I am a huge UO fan from way back when and would like to read this.

I like how he puts the OG Xbox logo. Is that a way of saying we are going back to old ways only time will tell. I like Phil, but I really know if he gets it 2 years from now. I will judge him heavily on japanese side as of right now. Give me Phantom Dust 2 now, their has not been a game with that style at all. I want to see longevity when comes to Japan don't give up half way.

You are good, Phillip. You are really damn good.
Man, I don't know if it'd turn out good or not but a big budget Shadowrun RPG would've been nice to see, something on the level of what the likes of Bioware, Bethesda, or CD Projekt Red would've turned out. It's great we got what we did though, and I think an FPS might've actually worked better AFTER that, as a sort of spin off to get people interested in the higher budget RPGs.

Sooo they have appointed an actual gamer, to be in charge of a gaming console?

What are you and what have you done with the real Microsoft!?!?!

You know, I could see Shadowrun work as a FPS if it was designed as an FPS RPG along the lines of something like Fallout New Vegas.

But the current Kickstarter revival for Shadowrun as a game series has been rather successful so far, Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall have been a nice turn around for the series.

Interesting decision to have Xbox reporting to Windows/software division...

In short term it might just mean more Xbox games for mobile (Windows/Phone), but long term is even more interesting.

If you take the corporate philosophy that Satya Nadella has presented of mobile and cloud first then combine that with Xbox having to report to the software/Windows division, it could mean that they no longer see Xbox's future as primarily console hardware anymore. Similar to Office 365 the next generation of Xbox could be a cloud powered service for Windows/iOS/Android/Mac. The hardware division would only manage Xbox input devices like mice keyboard, controllers, remotes, microphones and Kinect. The actual game processing power would come from the cloud, Azure being the platform delivering Xbox games to most popular mobile devices.

Just look at what Amazon unveils this week and imagine what the Xbox version of that might be in a few years. Xbox could become a cloud powered service; a mobile app for the consumer like Office/Netflix/Skype/Pandora. A disc driveless Xbox could be just the first baby step to moving their console to the cloud.

Yeah, a compromise would've been to go Deus Ex style too, which probably would've worked out really well for Shadowrun as at worst it's Deus Ex with magic thrown in.

Damn shame he wasn't in charge back in 2007...

I really hope he sees the potential in Shadowrun and other titles they licensed to Harebrained schemes and will fund a bigger games in the world that they published.

I think they could pull it off and it would be very interesting... they left money on the table by licensing them and not getting involved (for publishing, shouldn't touch development)

Mattrick isn't an actual gamer? I mean... the dude made Test Drive, Need for Speed, Stunts and 4D Boxing and stuff!
