NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

The math is fine, but it's unfair. He's saying 4 weeks vs 5 weeks, when it's really 28 days vs 31 days.
So February:
258k/28 = 9.12k per day
and March:
311k/31 = 10.03k per day

So it's an increase.

I'm pretty sure though, that NPD doesn't track individual days but actually weeks of sale.
So It IS actually 5 weeks vs 4.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

So is it safe to say that EA made out better on the Titan Fall exclusively deal then Microsoft? I still wonder is it was worth missing out on potential PS4 sales for what ever Microsoft paid them.

damn i want to comment on this so bad.

Oh how the tides have turned...

But I honestly think the Xbox One is still doing rather well sales wise regardless.

Seeing South Park on there as Number 3 makes me smile though. Good job Obsidian and Matt and Trey!

311k isn't even a 100k increase to february which was a 4 week month
so February:
258k/4 = 64.5k per week.
and March:
311k/5 = 62.2k per week.

IT'S A DECREASE IN SALES PER WEEK???!!?!?! TITANFALL anti-systemseller confirmed???

Seriously?

Can someone else verify this math?

This is correct. Xbox One sales are down month-over-month on a weekly basis when you adjust for the extra week.

That's pretty crazy. PS4 is a beast... I wonder how Vita did?
lol :(

People commenting on the software decline should keep in mind that March 2013 was a pretty crazy month (Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, new Gears and God of War games). Hopefully this data is accurate and this hasn't already been posted, this thread is moving at light speed

Now, back to my bunker.

Whats with all this drop Kinect stuff; I'd actually want Kinect bundled in when i eventually purchase my bone - its actually a draw to have it bundled in there with the system being some what reliant on it.

The most shocking thing about this thread is how many people are seeing the EDGE 'help' Xbox gif for the first time. That article got a lot of abuse on here. Turns out it was pretty spot on.

Microsoft need to do something drastic. Kinect has to go and they need their price below Sony's

They could do one with, one without Kinect. Problem solved

On a more rational note, I am happy that the XBO isn't actually flopping on the levels that Wii U is, simply because I guarantee you that Sony wouldn't be heralded as the Messiah if there was no one forcing them to be the better choice.

Competition is, and will forever be the true king.

I wonder the same. I'm sure EA made out on the deal. But having Titan Fall on the PS4 would have moved a lot more units and it could have sit Titan Fall up at "The Shooter franchise" for the generation.

Yeah, there is an alternate reality somewhere where we could have seen the outcome of a world where Titanfall was multiplatform 360/PS3/XBO/PS4.

But I don't think the results were good for Titanfall as a landmark franchise or one that Sony or Microsoft might jump to pay significant amounts of cash for in the future except maybe for some early DLC or something.

I wonder what this does for Titanfall as a franchise, though. By default, doesn't it become less valuable now as a series someone would want to buy exclusivity for?

It's never going to ascend to the ranks of CoD or Battlefield if it goes multiplat. The damage is done with the first one being console exclusive, which is ridiculous considering its a multiplayer online only game but I can already see this happening.

The Crimson Kid

what are you waiting for
Titanfall selling huge without a notable increase in Xbox One sales really gives a lot of credence to two predictions I've held for months:

-That Titanfall was a big reason why many chose to buy an Xbox One in previous months, and that a big debut wouldn't correspond with the big bump in hardware sales that Microsoft was looking for, because much of the audience for that game already had the console.
-That despite Microsoft's tireless efforts to only advertise the Xbox One version, a significant portion of current or upcoming Titanfall owners will do so on PC or on 360. While the NPD doesn't do a ton to support this prediction, Microsoft's refusal to name specific Xbox One sales for TF as well as the huge debut the 360 version had in the UK still lead me to believe this is the case.

I'm happy for Respawn's success and I bet they can't wait to have their sales explode so much further when TF2 comes around on PS4.

This topic is incredibly fun but I have to point something out being a GAF watcher for many years.

PlayStation family and Xbox family. It's funny that both companies have used the same exact spin.

Shipped to retailers = Sold. Again, both companies have used the same spin. It's funny to watch people say it's a bad thing when the other team does it.

And here's the one I've been waiting to mention...

How do we know the Sony numbers are legit? I'm not talking about NPD, but their WW numbers. Back in October 2013 we were told that Sony would be combining PS3 and PS4 numbers as they did with the PS3 and the PS2 for several years. (Source)

And that's just the thing, they don't sort them out elsewhere. In their recent financial reports its always a combined number. So how do we know they're telling the truth about their WW figures? There are no other sources.

Sorta makes you go "huh."

I'm glad I could contribute something interesting to such a fun thread. I'm ready for the slings and arrows.

Combining both in their reports. But the announcement of the 7 million sold is obviously just PS4. Because...........they said so. That's the "elsewhere."

Really?

That's not how it works. NPD goes by weeks, not by months. It's either 4 weeks or 5 weeks.

The XB1 sales are definitely down for the month.

Titanfall being on PC as well was a disaster for MS. It's not like they're going to get exclusive Titanfall 2 to make amends, and you could make the argument that Titanfall is never going to be as big as had obviously been hoped. Missing out on PS4 probably seemed acceptable when Microsoft seemed like it was in the better position for this gen, but not anymore. Arguably that decision limits Titanfall as an IP forever.

I'm perfectly ok with this. Sony came out swinging hard after PS3 got stuck in the back, but it seems Microsoft is desperate to try and be on top again. Even if it doesn't work, should be fun to watch.

It is going to be damn good fun. Microsoft is fighting for its life and Sony knows they need to make sure they put them away at E3 to prevent a comeback. It will be epic and we gamers are the winners. Desperation in this industry tends to be beneficial for us.

I also think this supports my initial beliefs that Titanfall was likely already having a positive impact on Xbox One sales to a good degree before the game was ever released or even close to release.

Still, congratulations are in order for Respawn on having best selling game of the month. Wonder what the exact number is. Would be cool to know that.

Must be why they release new sales data every month and label all the data based on the month it covers. I'm sure it's also why they focus so much on YOY increases that focus on specific months. :p

Holy fuck. This is the truly dire news.

That means Titanfall was not even remotely a system seller! I hope EA and Respawn can live with the fact they might have damaged their franchise's growth.

EA should have been smart and made Titanfall on PS4. Throw Xbox One timed or exclusive content but they shouldn't have made the whole thing exclusive. They missed out on sales and building a brand.

You say that as though Playstation gamers will be so scorned that they will never want to purchase Titanfall 2...

The thing you seem to fail to understand is that Sony does/did get called out for it, just like MS is.

Of course they did. I'm just citing the obvious hypocrisy of the team players. It's definitely a fun thing to watch.

Now I wish someone would address the point about combined sales figures. That's very interesting and I'd love to get some honest opinions. Why would a company need to combine sales figures with their previous hardware? You don't see this with the Wii / Wii U or the 360 and the Xbox One. That stuff is always sorted out in their company reports.

And does anyone think we'll get a solid PS4 number? Because if it's much higher, say in the 400k range, this thread will go atomic.

Dude, the first Call of Duty game was PC exclusive. What are you on about?

What a lot of bollocks.

Writing off a complete console line after less than 6 months on the market. I am afraid your post is nothing but hyperbole.

Quick question - Did you also right off the PS3 after 5 months on sale due to the slow launch, lack of quality titles and struggles with 3rd party game parity especially with the UE3 engine?

It's not over yet but it's pretty much there short of some massive Sony cockup.

They have the weaker console.
They have a more finicky architecture.
They have less experienced first party studios.
They're still recovering from bad PR.
They're behind on indies.
They're behind on volume.

this is worse than Sony's PS2 to PS3 cockups
