NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

Belittling and generalizing GAF this widely, I'm pretty sure publications have been banned for less. Or does GAF not do that anymore?

There can still be good articles that come out of Polygon. Just because an editor is making a fool of himself on Twitter doesn't mean the site has no merit.

Thankfully I never predicted TF to bolster XBO numbers. I couldn't understand how people felt like the 1st iteration of this game was going to do any system any major favors anyway. Now TF 2 on the other hand? If it ends up being the beast of a game I expect it to be, then you may see hardware move. By that time though, the market leader will most definitely have solidified their place.

Note: Think Call of Duty, and GTA for that matter. The first iterations of both games didn't make anybody go hog wild for any particular console.

I'm still just kind of in awe. I don't know of any non-fanboy that expected this outcome. Hell, even I purchased a Xbox One in March thanks to the Microsoft Store error, and I didn't even want Titanfall.

And while I generally don't try and contribute to the Polygon hate, they seem to enjoy lobbing free material then get upset when they are considered a moving target. Still sad Owen Good ended up there, as he was one of my faves. It shouldn't matter, but the cloud created by who you affiliate with can overshadow your accomplishments in any field. At least there is still twitter.

Gies purposefully chose to stop posting on NeoGAF after EviLore called him "the most disreputable person in the enthusiast press".

I need to never break from GAF. That's hilarious. Ben is probably too hipster to have a paid-for email to sign up here anyway.

Kuchera seems to be having a mental breakdown.

He decides to raise some beef he has with NPD, just when the new numbers are released, and lo and behold they are unfavorable to the console he seems to feel some weird, emotional attachment to.

How emotionally deprived do you have to be, to not only be this affected by hardware sales but then to showcase it to the world, the same world that knows you write for a certain website?

When i was a kid and a SNES fanboy, some kids teased me that Mega Drive was better, it was 1 vs 3, i went home that day a little down, but was cheered up when my mom got me some juice. And that was that.

I am off to Heartstone to hopefully meet him and make juice out of him.

Is he and Gies banned on GAF?

Honest/curious question.

I believe Gies owes a user money here. He stopped posted after people called him out on it, IIRC. No idea if he's banned.

Its just worded really badly to try and confuse people I guess.

They mean it like Titanfall (which is a game for the Xbox One) was number 1 on the NPD on the overall/all formats chart.

Its likely mostly xbox one, how many people with a PC are gonna buy the physical version of titanfall

I really don't get it to be honest. With all the deals and great games to play already on XB1 I thought there would be more demand. They must have really soured gamers at that reveal. This is a very important E3 and they need to take a loss on these and undercut the PS4 price kinectless or otherwise. I think the XB1 is gonna be fine overall. So far its a better console for me. Could change at any moment though. I really can't wait for E3.

Still need to see some Wii U, handheld, and software numbers. I know you leakers are out there lurking somewhere.

NPD from here on out should be interesting.

Seems like TF didn't set the world on fire. Lets see how both consoles perform for the next few months once the heavy hitters are out of the way......

It's his personal Twitter profile. This isn't an article from Polygon attacking GAF.

Kuchera + Aegies

I've probably murdered more brain cells than those two jokers have combined.

Note: murder means drink copious amounts of alcoholic beverages

Better games may down the road.

All this "titanfall couldn't help it" shit boggles my mind. Titanfall was never marketed as the second coming of Jesus to the gaming community. Yes there as a huge push but never to salvage Microsofts position in the industry. Let's wait to see if better games can give Microsoft the momentum it needs

Actually it was. Many times over. The press drooled about it. You had places like Giantbomb cover it with more than five hours of coverage amongst three different videos. Let's not be disingenuous here.

Nothing stops the PS4 train. SO happy for Sony. Glad I went with that system over XBone.

However, I wouldn't say X-Bone is doing HORRIBLY or anything. 5 million vs. 7 million is not that huge a difference and the XB1 is still doing much better than the 360 did in the same time frame and that was considered a huge success. It's like saying XB1 is doing really good, but PS4 is doing really, REALLY good so XB1 is automatically a failure? (Although, all those price drops and sales last week stunk of desperation). Not only that, but thier new IP was the #1 seller this month without the 360 version even out yet.

I don't wanna sound like I'm defending MS (I have ZERO intentions of buying an XB1 anytime soon), but I don't think they're doing horribly.

Can;t wait for Titanfall 2 on PS4. ;-)

So at this time in 2008 when the PS3 needed saving and along came MGS4: 405,000 PS3s were sold compared to 219,000 Xbox 360s.

http://egm.1up.com/news/june-npd-mgs4-dominates-nintendo

I'm pretty shocked that with all the marketing hype. and "2nd coming of Jesus" the gaming press were heaping on the game after E3 2013 that the console wasn't able to outsell the PS4.

As a reaction to this,I'm sure Microsoft will drop the price of the Kinect bundle and seriously consider a Kinectless sku

"Have you seen Titanfall?"

That was a legit answer for things. So maybe not directly marketed but it was marketed as JC Part 2.

Wow, huge congrats to Sony, I cannot believe they pulled through with 60k (!) units ahead of X1, even with Titanfall, Titanfall bundles, and all those unofficial price drops. Heck, even the official $50 off on the MS store ones!

Crazy. Where does MS go from here to get back first place? I don't know if they can, but they are sitting pretty healthy so far. All is well in the game industry.

What are "better games"? Titanfall has pretty much been pushed since it's reveal as the big "exclusive" to get a One over PS4. I'm also of the mind that don't think MS's position needs salvaging since the Xbone is doing pretty well.

NPD is greater than gaming itself, so much to take in the spin has started its glorious, dat subtle defending, the industry bias, total denial, its scrumptious Sony doing these numbers seeing it all unfold will be entertaining I hope it keeps up.

First I watched the Polygon guys talk about how the NPD numbers were beneath them, yet here they are talking about it.

I really did want to like that site while it was being constructed, I even listened to the Besties weekly, but damn do they have some weirdos running that ship.

They can make fun of GAF users all they want, but I haven't seen it working out of them much.

I can't tell you what Microsoft is thinking internally, but as much as I find these results unsurprising, I also find them unalarming.

Microsoft's problem is price, and it's going to take more significant moves on that price front if they want to get back to consistent sales parity with the PS4. I think they'll be fine with games, though naturally it wouldn't hurt to have several good titles come along and build some momentum, but on the games that matter, they'll be fine. They'll have all the multiplatforms that the audience craves, they'll have a handful of exclusives that can draw additional people in. They might suffer a bit on variety, but they'll trade that off with some superior titles in other genres.

That said, it's not as if the Xbox One is performing poorly, at least not in the US. It's doing quite well. The problem is more of perception locally, as obviously PS4 is doing tremendously well. And as long as Sony keeps the price advantage in these first couple of years, it will keep outperforming Microsoft, and then even if later on Microsoft achieves parity, the die will already be cast, inertia will win out, and Sony will continue to outsell the Xbox One.

If Microsoft wants to come to parity in sales, they need to first achieve price parity, do it quickly, and that likely means removing Kinect from the box. If they're not willing to do that, these results will continue, and maybe they're fine with that.

Conspiracy accusations are nothing but a strawman argument. When MS and Nintendo deliver their own financial reports they do not combine DS + 3DS, Wii + Wii U, or 360 + Xbox One. They sort all this stuff out. Being suspicious of combined numbers isn't paranoia, it's common sense.

We have to remember that Sony has expertly used sales data as PR tool since the PS2 era. This is a well known fact. And why shouldn't they? Sales number do effect consumer confidence.

sony_slide2..jpg

I suppose there's some truth there, but we have to draw a very fine line on giving too much weight to the belief that sales affect consumer confidence. Seeing a bunch of people go nuts over Iphones, for example, certainly didn't make me want one more, nor did it convince me that it was a bigger deal than I thought it was, and the same was true for the wii's amazing early success. I didn't want a Wii till Xenoblade and Last Story.

It may be true for some hardcore gamers that follow sites like GAF and other places, but I've never been somehow more or less confident in buying a game based product because others were, or were not, doing so. I suppose if you associate sales directly with word of mouth then perhaps I can see it, but the problem there is that even games which have sold next to nothing tend to enjoy impressive word of mouth post release. Take those Naruto game releases, for example, especially the initial ubisoft releases for the 360. I didn't care who agreed or didn't agree with me about those games, I loved them. They were right up my alley, so I bought them based on that fact alone. Same exact logic also applies for why I stood in line for a 360 in the first place. I did so primarily because of Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, and everybody is aware that they didn't exactly set the sales world on fire.

So, saying sales affect consumer confidence, though it's certainly capable of being true in some instances, has serious caveats, And lastly, the Xbox One is, by all reasonable measures, outpacing the sales of the very successful Xbox 360, and yet people are taking from this a strange doomsday scenario in which Microsoft will sell the "struggling" Xbox business to Kennedy Fried Chicken or something. A bit more extreme than what some have suggested from time to time, but you get the idea haha.

Stop spreading false information man. It's 5 million shipped vs 7 million sold through. Xbone I'd estimate is between 4-4.5 million.

From MS PR:
The march is on toward the launch of “Titanfall” and the Xbox One team is incredibly excited. Heralded as “the most addictive game ever”, the “most important game in years”, and the “next generation of gaming”, soon you will be able to experience how life is better with a Titan.

Standard quotes, right? :p

so, uhhh......anyone got any Wii U/DKC:TF numbers? Tropical Freeze did relatively well last month seeing as how it was only on the market for 8 days in February. curious to see how it did in March

To be fair, everybody used that fucking song at E3. I believe Gerstmann predicted that and called it lame before it even happened, too.
