NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

I lol'd.

I just got into the thread and unfortunately don't have time to read much of it, but I really hope you don't get banned over that post by some mod who doesn't get the reference.

Mocking a ridiculous (albeit ancient in GAF years) post by Amir0x is all well and good, but in your satire, you make a valid point without actually stating it.

Anyone can make a comeback no matter how buttfucked they appear to be at the moment.

I promise you that there's not a person on our staff who wouldn't get the reference. If you ever notice coldfoot banned, it's for completely different reasons.

With what we know of the X1's pace, that 5,000,000 shipped to retailers could take several months to actually sale through.

This month will be the X1's largest till the holidays. So they will sell 150-250K or so for the rest of the year.

How much do they sell in the UK / other territories?

Heck, could be 3 months before those 5 million are actually sold to consumers.

If Sony sells 1m a month for those 3, then by July you could be seeing a 10m vs. 5m customer sale through type scenario.

Yikes. I was sort of joking in the past talking about a return to the PS2 vs. Gamecube type numbers but if this keeps up much longer ..... that snowball effect and all.

We know the PlayStation sold through numbers and the Xbox One sold-in (shipment) numbers.

For Sony they're selling out pretty quickly so the sold-through isn't very different, so their incentive is to report sold-through as it's the more impressive way to report numbers.

For Microsoft there's definitely a lag, so reporting sold-in for an extra 500K or whatever is more worthwhile to them.

When the PS4 stabilizes for a while they will probably move to shipments, at which point we can compare them directly from that front.

heh

I think Microsoft is in trouble now.

Sony has MLB14 coming up for the Ps4.
They have exclusive marketing for Watchdogs.
They have The Last Of Us Remastered coming up.
They have DriveClub coming up.
They have exclusive marketing for Destiny.
They have The Order 1886 coming up.
They have Planetside2 coming up.

Microsoft has basically nothing until SunsetOverdrive, Halo2 Anniversary or Forza Horizon2 hit.

Microsofts really needs to knock it out of the park at E3.
By that I mean not only games wise. They need to show something amazing like Illumiroom or a VR/AR solution.
They need to drop the price below Ps4.
And they need to show a of amazing exclusives.

What the ... no obviously not. They're over 5m LTD which means that's how many they've made. It's illegal (in their financials) to do shady shit like that.

No... It's not shady. You're going to have a high turnover of units going in and out of stores for a major product like this. I know they've made 5 million. What I'm wondering is if the unsold units are sitting on store shelves or if they've been returned to MS to make space for Titanfall bundles.

Well, another month I got my predictions wrong - I had the Xbox One winning March over the PS4 narrowly. I blew it. If you look at the Xbox One's sales and divide it by the number of weeks in NPD's "March" it actually sold less than it did in Feb on a normalized basis. I'm not making this mistake again. I don't see the Xbox One winning another NPD till Halo 5., even with a price cut (Its effectively on par with the PS4 already). Globally they're already out of it. I don't see them coming anywhere near the PS4's global dominance. They're at 3.9-4.1m LTD ww (estimated) vs 7+m.

This doesn't mean they should go crazy and take a huge loss on the hardware at $399 with Kinect or $299 without it. Its not going to improve their global situation materially. The Xbox One is still selling well and I think they need to be happy with selling 30-40m over 5 years (vs the PS4s 60-75m) as long as they make a profit on it. I'm sure Yusuf Mehdi, Major Nelson et all would hate that state of affairs but the board would be well pleased that they still have reasonable market share without bleeding money and jeapordizing the future of the division within Microsoft.

Finally congratulations to Sucker Punch - I loved Infamous and think they'd have been #1 on the software charts if they'd had the same amount if days on the market as Titanfall did.

This thread is amazing. It's almost the exact opposite of NPD threads during the early days of the last generation. It's like bizarro world.

Charles Weichselbaum ‏@RealityPales 1m
@aegies 2 Million Units is close in a 5 month span?

Arthur Gies ‏@aegies 57s
@RealityPales in a third of the territories and after we haven't gotten xbox one numbers in a while? yeah. closer than i thought.

This rhetoric of PS4 being in the lead because it is released in more territories is such nonsense. The places the One is not sold in currently are practically negligible to MS. It's not suddenly going to start selling extra millions in those markets.

To everyone thinking a price drop is going to make this better, it will not. X1 needs games, something to justify the purchase. At best a price drop will give them a one month bump.

Yep.

Kuchera is right about NPD not counting digital sales, and who knows how many Xbox Ones were sold digitally in March. This could be huge.

I'll repeat myself - he clearly says in one of his tweets that it's 'only good for basic hardware sales data'.

So enough with the 'digital console sales' nonsense - he didn't say it, I didn't say it.

Wait wait...5 Mil sold to *retailers*? So what's the sell through look like? That's a much bigger gap between Sony / MS than I anticipated.

Kuchera is a clown though so I think it's okay to make shit up as long as GAF knows that we're making shit up to rile him up! :)

Well you have to build up enough stock that it's worth reporting shipped instead.

That'd be what, channel inventory of 500K-1 million?

Usually hot product get near a sold out state during the holidays so if we're going to see shipped numbers, it would probably have to be around October at latest.

This is the most melodramatic post I have ever read on this forum. No doubt the situation is not great for either Microsoft or to a greater extent Nintendo. However, we are less than a year in. I take the decision not to take as many loans out as possible and bet on one horse, when there is a possible decades worth of all manner of gaming advances yet to be seen
People still fall for this?

So TitanFall did it's job. Sold the most games. Great game with great sales. The highest selling exclusive for any console. Beating Infamous.

Did it? I didn't see the Xbone numbers for Titanfall.

Also, the fact that it released on PC and 360 means its really not that exclusive, right?

Yep.

Not really. I truly believe a lower price, Kinect-less sku will sell tons. I would seriously consider buying one then. this is the first generation where I haven't owned all consoles. I suspect there are lots of others like me on the sidelines.

Retailers were selling the xbone at $350 with a game or even 12/mo Live and it still didn't win.

the ps4 is doing insane and I think it even has had fewer must have games so far.

Gotta be a real drop coming right? Can MS really coast through until the holidays even if they have an amazing E3?

May have been asked, but is Titanfall on the XB1 the highest selling game in March, or the highest selling game in March when taking the XB1 and PC into account?

Wait wait...5 Mil sold to *retailers*? So what's the sell through look like? That's a much bigger gap between Sony / MS than I anticipated.

They had 900k sitting on shelves in Jan on a smaller production base. Assuming the sell through rate has actually improved (it should have with the price cuts and software releases) and saying the unsold inventory is still at 900k - 1.1m that would put their sold through number at 3.9 - 4.1m world wide.

It's a shame it came from him because it's a very good point - look at the headline about the drop in software sale from retail. Is digital picking up that gap? Is the overall market growing but the retail channel shrinking?
