NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

This...can...not...be...

XBox One had to win. It HAD to. It had titanfall, TITANFALL! I mean, surely everyone saw it? And if they saw it, the secret hipnotic message should've told them to buy 3 copies. So how could Titalfall not make the XBox One win?

There is no other explanation. Somene at NPD must've been #TeamPS4 and inputted the incorrect numbers on purpose. Yeah thats it! Theres no way XBox One couldn't atleast sell over 9,000 more units than PS4!

My fellow XBone special someones, we must band together and take down this evil NPD manipulator before he overthrows our entire XBox Empire(tm) before its too late!

FOR GALIFREY! FOR VICTORY! FOR THE END OF TIME ITSELF!!!

And what's this doom and gloom for the Xbone? Is it selling less than the 360 did after the same number of months? I don't think so. So why is it in trouble? Everyone who isn't in first place we should worry about? You guys were panicking for PS3 and X360 last gen because the Wii was selling a shitons more??

The problem is a large part of Microsoft's business model (selling Xbox Live Gold subscriptions) really only works if you're dominant in the market, considering the odds of people maintaining two subscriptions for online multiplayer is low and that PS+ has the advantage of being a requirement to access any of the "free" games on PS3 and Vita. Plus if one console breaks away from the pack (such as the PS4 is currently doing and the 360 did initially), that can expect to see a bunch of exclusives (ignoring the fact that the Japanese minor leagues would be making PS4 exclusives by default).

So wait, Titanfall was the top selling software, yet PS4 was still the top Hardware?

How does that even work?
(I know how that works, I'm just legit shocked)

I hope this means there's a chance we may see South Park on the PS4.

More players buying more diverse games on the PS4.

X1 owners simply buying Titanfall.

That is one explanation, generalized of course.

Guys. Knock on wood...GAF stayed up during NPD!!

I'd like to take time out of this thread to thank the engineers who work on GAF, nginx, varnish and other caching mechanisms and EviLore for enjoying Raid 2!!

what are you waiting for
The next few months are going to be rough for the Xbox One.

There are no noteworthy releases to drum up demand for the console from now until fall. They've tried all the easier options for lowering the price of entry with bundling their biggest exclusive and a year of XBL Gold, and those have failed to spur sales (avg. weekly sales this month were worse than last month for XB1 despite the value proposition being much better comparatively). They can't afford to take those deals away because demand would dry up.

Comparatively, the PS4 has some pretty big console exclusives coming soon in MLB The Show and Planetside 2 (I really think this game will make a big impression among console gamers) as well as Sony having huge co-marketing deals for the biggest third-party games from now until October with Destiny and Watch Dogs.

Even a massively impressive E3 showing from Microsoft won't move the needle in the short term when they need it most. Microsoft simply has no content to move the needle from now until fall, which I think is a big reason why Titanfall was pushed by MS to the extreme it was. They needed Titanfall to make a substantive difference for Xbox One momentum and it hasn't.

Something drastic has to happen in the short term to alter the value proposition of the Xbox One, and since you can't just make valuable content appear in a month or two, the change will likely have to be hardware-related. If Microsoft doesn't do something big, they will effectively be ceding the next 4-6 months to Sony build momentum among consumers and publishers/developers.

Wat. Xbox One has a good line-up of exclusives, that isnt the problem

If that wasn't the problem people would have jumped onto the various sales that have happened throughout the previous couple months. $449 TF/System bundle is an absurd deal, still isn't moving consoles. That is an effective price of $389, hell you could sell the TF copy on ebay for an easy 40 if you do not want the game. You think you are going to get a Kinectless SKU at E3 for less than $399?

Kuchera is right about NPD not counting digital sales, and who knows how many Xbox Ones were sold digitally in March. This could be huge.

It's so sad how many people read this and didn't catch the joke at all, but instead responded seriously and ever so slightly bitter.

Yes, since I literally just glanced by the post now, read the results, and the first page of comments. Some of us don't own any consoles but are still interested and a fan of the medium as a whole. Seeing the reactions to this post is just beyond me. I had no idea some take this console wars stuff so full on amd some are equally sarcastic about it. Sucks to be me wondering by right?
The post is just a parody on another post that was posted some years ago. It was originally about the PS3.

So TitanFall did it's job. Sold the most games. Great game with great sales. The highest selling exclusive for any console. Beating Infamous.

At what cost? The budget for Titanfall likely tripled Infamous certainly when you include marketing, had bundles discounted that were already giving the game away for free, and may have just barely outsold a single sku game worldwide. But sure, mission accomplished.

Great job Sony. It's well deserved. It looks like it's over for MS at this point without a big price cut to place it cheaper than the PS4. Microsoft will just rush their next system out to try to beat Sony to the punch. I wouldn't be surprised to see MS release the new Xbox in 2017 if they actually do release another console. Atleast they won't be able to buy off 3rd party exclusives hopefully as it would be too big of an investment with a much smaller install base.

The PS4 and XB1 are the two highest selling systems in a 5 month span in U.S. history.
Bigger than the Wii,PS2,360,etc....

Can you explain it? No one is enlightening me. I literally haven't owned a console since early 360/Wii days and this is my first time actually looking at an NPD thread rather than article. I'm guessing the meme relates to one of them
It's the Amirox Final Fantasy XIII multiplatform freakout, iirc. I'm on my phone or I'd link it, but you should be able to find it from that. There's even a dramatic reading iirc.

Take 2, Bethesda, Activision, Ubisoft and pretty much any publisher not EA is firmly in the PS camp this generation. If anything I'd expect a GTAV PS4 bundle/co marketing deal just like they did for the PS3.

And the bolded alone will make me happy. Because really it's two of their games I bought my PS4 for (Fallout and Elder Scrolls, but more so for Fallout honestly. And I'd love to see another Obsidian done Fallout to tell the truth).

And MS can have EA, I avoid their games anyways (though after Ubisoft's comments on The Crew as well as just looking at what they have done with their games I'm thinking of adding them on the avoid list as well).

I pretty much expected the Xbox One to closely win this month, kinda like last month where PS4 was up by ~35k units. For the PS4 to win the month, and possibly by 60k... I don't know what to think anymore.

I was waiting for this post :D delivered!

So PS4 sold more than XB1, but do we have any guesses as to how much that this point?

The Nintendo spin doctors are also clearly busy trying to figure out how to make 55k Wii Us seem like a good thing, I'm sure.

I'm not salty at all, I just think NeoGAF was generally more excited for Infamous than Titanfall.

Titanfall threads were huge, but mostly because of the anti-hype.

Lol, I just did a search of thread titles here on Gaf. "Titanfall" gave 373 threads, "infamous" gave 377. No Possible way that Titanfall wasn't more hyped.

Thuway says 60k, making it 371k PS4 vs 311k Xbone.

The news today confirms what we all knew, titan fall's hype was manufactured.

It didn't do poorly, though. #2 best seller on the system after a month is a pretty good outcomes for a new IP.

Looks like that half billion they dropped on the NFL's lap was money well spent.
Yeah, that's the thing with Xbox One; MS wanted to go beyond gaming and it was expensive. That deal alone must have cost more money than all of Sony's first party exclusives combined.
