NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

Japan is a whole other story. There's no compelling software yet. Not equivalent at all to XB1 with Titanfall is it?
I guess that's true, but I feel like both situations have a barren year ahead of them, which is partly the cause of the slowdown (the other part being general apathy). I'm sure when games like Quantum Break and Halo 5 drop, things will pick up, but the problem is how to foster any sort of momentum until those huge titles drop.

I really hope MS has a solid roadmap at E3 this year.

IT'S OVER LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IT'S OVER!

I have a hard time imagining a month where Xbone will outsell PS4 at this point, besides maybe price drop month. Titanfall was as hot of an exclusive as you can ask for. Maybe Halo?

love this gif.

The dunk was sick.

i'd like to ask a question for those that know about these things. can retailers send back consoles and get their money back? i imagine microsoft got to 5 mil consoles shipped thanks to the titanfall bundle but since it's likely they won't be selling those consoles anytime soon i imagine the retailers will want to get rid of them.

Yes. US retailers sent back large numbers of the basic WiiU SKU as it was not selling at all.

They dropped the price for this whole month and still got outsold. They would have to go lower than they did this month for it to work.

I just realized Nintendo haven't had a profitable year since the launch of the 3DS.

That pretty crazy for a "smashing success".

So the real question is did Infamous outsell the Bone version of TitanFall. MS won't win NPD for a really long time. Now, Sony should pack in some cheap game like Knack for free and put the foot to the throat. Won't effect their bottom line, and improves value at the same time.

Don't let them off the mat.

Might not be a bad idea. After all now that Infamous is out there isn't a "system seller" for PS4 for a good distance. Keep the momentum going.

Devil's advocate: The PS3 gave up a year head start to the 360 and also had a bit of a rough launch, but managed to catch up world wide over the long run.

While I don't see Xbone doing the same thing, large-ish comebacks aren't completely unheard of.

The PS4's lead is already huge, though that's also a situation we haven't faced before since we're currently experiencing one of the most front-loaded console generations ever.\

It's all a Brave New World, like the Iron Maiden song. Not the book, Iron Maiden is better than books.

I think the strong used market for the Vita causes it to see fewer new sales. I got mine for $120 on craigslist 6 months ago with Madden and an 8GB card. Why pay upwards of $200 for the system when people are selling it for half price used?

The thirst is real after 8 fucking long years of the last generation. Never again.

It shouldn't bother you. 4-5 million consoles sold already is not bad unless I'm just gravely mistaken. PS4 has sold more, but I don't see how that makes the Xbox One sales bad.

That's exactly how it felt with PSP. DS was just such a beast of a machine that many people didn't (and still don't) realize PSP sold nearly 80 Million units (and is still selling). To put that in perspective, only PS1, PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii, DS (and its variants), GameBoy (Original through Color), and Gameboy Advance sold more units. That puts it top 10 of all video game systems ever.

This is probably not the most reliable of sources...

People say this and forget that the biggest selling games are the system sellers. The lower price makes it easy. No pack-in needed, they simply have to produce enough to meet demand.

So...2014 will be the last time we see an announcement for Vita titles?
I knew those 4 Vita games announcement was too good! Why would Sony want to market the Vita?
2014 Swan song...oh Vita, your amazing OLED screen will always live in my heart.

I don't know if people realize this or not, but Mario Kart Wii is the fifth best-selling game of all time. MK8 can be huge for Wii U, especially down the stretch.

You are talking about Japan's marketing though as suppa mentioned. It worked well enough to move what 420k+ in Japan alone where Lightning is still very popular. All SE did here was facebook campaigns and the art contest AFTER the game release. And both were/are pretty successful. But shoving it down our throats? I doubt most people knew it was even coming.

As for FFX being delayed, it's simple: why release two FF titles in the same month?
I don't want to argue much here but LR was obviously marketed much more than FF X|X-2 HD. I am not comparing it to other titles in the series, but i saw/heard more of LR pre-release than i saw of FF X|X-2 HD.

They could have released FF X earlier you know. They obviously feared that it could have a negative effect on LR sales. And obviously, the reverse could be true for FF X|X-2 HD, which was the second FF release within a month.

So...2014 will be the last time we see an announcement for Vita titles?

Lets see what the upcoming Borderlands 2 and Minecraft bundle do.

Worldwide will probably get way worse. They would have to DOMINATE U.S/U.K. for that to happen.

You state this stuff about Kinect as if it is fact. Believe it or not, some people actually enjoy what Kinect brings to the table. I dig it and use it often, in game and out of it. It is a key differentiator between the two systems so far.

A key differentiator that I think most people don't care about. There wasn't even a game that used the Kinect until a week ago.

It is an appendix that Microsoft is treating as a vital organ. It needs to be excised.

I think that's a perfect way of putting it.

That ratio looks wrong to me...
That's the point. They're a highly conservative company, hoarding large cash piles rather than investing those retained earnings from what I recall out of fear of either collapse or take-over. When they've encountered strong, fierce competition, I'm under the impression they'd rather avoid it entirely and instead pursued uncontested (or at least perceived uncontested markets). They zig when others zag, and I don't think the impetus is always as you suggest, because they want to, but rather at least in part because they think the need to. So I find the idea that they're going to take this market failure as a message to modify and adapt to the current console market and try to appeal to the "core" again, somewhat optimistic.

Ah, I can now see a contradiction in my post. I can't say that they do whatever they want, while saying that it's impossible for them to do otherwise, now can I? :/

You make a fair assessment though. They can forget the core market straight up, I don't feel like it is ever coming back to them unless one or both of the other two just up and disappear. (Hell, I don't even know how long the other two can keep it going either)

I guess what the poster you first replied to was trying to say is that hopefully Nintendo's failure with the Wii U makes them go with a different strategy all together, not necessary one that is core-centric. I feel like the Wii U is Nintendo trying to hold too much in their hands. They wanted both markets, yet dropped both of them quite hard.

I wonder if this could finally be the cold shower than the AAA machine needed. EA/Microsoft were trying to buy success with Titanfall. It didn't work. Last month's XBone sales aggregated to a 5 week tracking period would have been 322.5k. This month is worse for the XBone than last month. The game is almost certainly going to be an unprecedented commercial failure after accounting for marketing costs. And now as GTA 5 has predictably fallen off the charts, Minecraft on a single last gen system continues to hit the top 10 two years after its release.

titanfail ...wtf i predicted the one to handily beat ps4 in march.
it is over, no wonder the execs of the one were dropping flies. they deserved it for the way they manhandled core gamers who had all the while make up their xbox brand.

how can one fall so far from the apple tree?

Just as a counter point.

The PS3 had control from basically everywhere but the US/UK last generation. While they caught up in WW sales, and actually surpassed the 360, it was the combination of many other markets.

Microsoft can really only depend on NA, Sony dominates nearly every other market.

They are losing NA right now and have no support from Europe/Japan.

We're actually still missing PS3, a Wii/Wii U split and 3DS.

Although I just noticed the lack of saying Xbox beat PlayStation in the MS PR, and that would imply the converse (not that it says a lot in that all it tells us is the PS3 sold more than 50K, which should be something of a given I guess unless it completely collapsed last month).

Oh, their PR also tells us total SW unit sales were ~8.37M units.

That, and
Plat station Domination Continuation
The PS4 is the future, the future is PS4
and Slystation always make me laugh.

I still find it interesting when people do this fanboy type thing about their console of choice needeing to be the future. (Hint, happiness comes from your own enjoyment of the product, not its "domination"). I wonder what the 360 is the future people thought when PS3 overtook it in sales a few years back. The thing is, anything can change and we are very early in. Regardless, sales don't bother me.

As long as there is enough sales to continue support for a platform that is all I care about.

I highly doubt that we will see any major Vita first party announcements after this year. The Vita is dead at retail in the US. :(

What honest to goodness "system seller" has Playstation had since GTA3/VC/SA?

Sony doesn't win with "silver bullet" huge exclusive system sellers. They win by having a bunch of great games that all sell fairly well and their combined total of games across all genres produces a compelling library.

Currently, what other options do you have? if you really want the system you will pay for it. I happen to think that the $100 extra has been worth it. A price drop probably will occur. It is a much more versatile piece of hardware in comparison to the Sony camera, no?

PS4 camera is sold out everywhere... show's want, and or need...

Kinect... most are trying to figure out how to buy the XBO with out it.

This is the difference between forcing hardware on people, or making the optional hardware compelling enough to buy.

as for much more versatile... depends on what you are using it for... if for instance you are largely using it for the voice commands then you payed an extra $100 for a mic. Sony included one of those with the PS4 for free.

I don't know, but could Titanfall have sold even less than 1 million in XO?

The lack of numbers make me think that are worst (really worst) than they thought and it could have sold less than InFamous (1million) worldwide

A key differentiator that I think most people don't care about. There wasn't even a game that used the Kinect until a week ago.

For me, Kinect Sports Rivals isn't even something I want to play. I didn't enjoy the demo and the game doesn't really appeal to me, however the Kinect still has a purpose besides Kinect Sports. I know that doesn't sit well with some, but I use my Kinect a ton in game for titles like BF4, Madden 25, FIFA 14 and others that I found useful. Its usage out of gaming is also beneficial to me.

key differentiator? in what universe? people don't care about kinect, that much is true. if they did, people would've been buying the more-expensive system because "kinect is worth it".

and how has it been a "key differentiator" when nothing came out of it, or for it? so much so, that xbox even gave up gpu resources meant to be reserved for kinect.

I don't know why you're being so anal about it. Near 10k can also mean >10k. 10.5k is near 10k.
This is where we differ.

XB1+360 = 372K in Feb = .43 HW (MS PR, in which they ignore handhelds).
Total console = 865K
Less leaked numbers for PS4, PS3 and Wii U = ~40K Wiis.

Ergo, ratio was 2:1 last month Wii U: Wii.
I see. I was lead to believe the Wii and Vita sold about the same last month.

Why is the PS4 Camera selling so well? I'm pretty uninformed on it and since I just bought my own PS4, wondering why it's so popular and if I should get one for any good reason.

I think it's just springing back after being completely out of stock for a long time.

Well stocked, Titanfall packed, generously price cut, 2nd place. That's gotta be disappointing after all that. Makes you wonder what the numbers would've been without the incentives.

I think more people are interested in the potential of Titanfall 2 than the number of people wanting to play the first Titanfall. I think most people want to wait until a multiplatform release hits that fixes all the issues from the first. Whether or not this more fleshed out sequel hits both platforms is up in the air. But I think what I just wrote is really what is at play here.
