2010 was the last great one.

That one wasn't that great though, I remember 2010 being a nonstop show stopper with game announcements, donkey kong, Kirby epic yarn, skyward sword, golden eye, then they ended it with the 3ds reveal and all those game announcements. Epic.

***Did you stealth edit? I could've sworn you originally said 2011..

I'm curious to see what the "digital event" will be like. The press release states they're building on having more than just a Direct so maybe it'll be something more special than usual. Honestly I don't miss the press conferences just because there's so much terrible crap in them usually.

I guess we'll have to see how it plays out. So far so good though.

I feel the same. I'm so over E3 press conferences. They come off as fake now since they want to "win" E3 in the eyes if the press and blogs.

They don't have to be fake. Unfortunately some companies have turned them into ridiculous stage shows, canned demos, advertisements to the broader audience, or places to show off celebrities in a move to make everything style over substance. That sort of thing makes E3 conferences useless.

But an E3 conference is a great way to attract media attention to your products too. And if you happen to actually be showing off exciting things your product can do, then it's great for everybody. Nintendo shouldn't be looking down their nose at press attention.

They are already in the nokia theatre. Watch a stream of them showing their digital event there, which they will do, and there you have your press conference. ^^

Quite possibly the best thing Nintendo as ever done, lol.

Anyways... I'm kind of sad it's looking like no real press conference again. Their stream last year was complete shit because of nonstop buffering. I hope they use Youtube this time.

To an extent, I agree. However, unfortunately, it's about image and Nintendo not hosting a conference gives the media the wrong image which spreads and spreads.
That's BS as in it shouldn't be that way. E3 press conferences to me has become nothing more than a bunch of guys in suits titled Vice President try and 1-up each other.

Nintendo has some great "viral" marketing guys... they just don't get NEARLY enough money and don't do nearly enough... Nintendo's traditional marketing blows and that seems to take up 90% of their budget.

Haha perfect. Her body wasn't ready for Reggie Fils-Aimech.

Again no conference after doing so well last year with the Direct is incredibly stupid, but that's what I've come to expect. As long as they're releasing great new games for me (and, most likely, only for me). I'm good.

But are they really? Last year while we were watching the Direct, journos were at Nintendo's booth playing games.

This is the goofiest bullshit ever. None of the "mainstream media" gives a crap about E3 except to note that "all the geeks and dweebs are now converging" and maybe there's a minor useless footnote when brand new hardware gets unveiled. Nobody is gonna report on a goddamned thing, they're showing new games to the gamers and journos who care with the video stream and none of the pointless bullshit they have to deal with to put on a conference.

This "media persecution" that everyone perceives exists against Nintendo ain't gonna change by them holding some goofy fuckin' live event at the Nokia--they're doing one better by using it instead for a MOTHER FUCKING SMASH BROS. TOURNAMENT which is about the most baller-ass shit ever invented.

Know what worked better, especially for Nintendo? Spaceworld. An event that was all to their own... no fighting for attention, focus entirely on your own brand. This is what ALL THREE should be doing versus E3.

Awesome vid, though I am a bit disappointed that there's no live conference again. Oh well, hopefully there are more announcements & a better stream than last year.

We finally know what Nintendo has planned for E3!

YouTube!

Super Smash Bros. Invitational Tournament : During E3, at Nokia Theatre, thousands of fans can go and participate in the very first tournament for the new Super Smash Bros. !

Super Smash Bros Fest : New Smash Bros. playable at Best Buy during E3

Treehouse Live at E3 : Constant daily streams with game creators throughout E3.

Nintendo Digital Event : New games and announcements, June 10 at 9pm (no idea if live or not).
The "press conference" is at 9AM, not 9PM. Their traditional time.

The Digital Event sounds like a Direct-like livestream, but with more showmanship than just Iwata standing in front of a white background. I'm okay with that.

God damn, they better not only use Ustream again this year. It was the worst quality stream I've seen in years.

Also, by only doing an online stream they're definitely going to miss out on a ton of more "mainstream" buzz and viewers. Only Nintendo fans will probably tune in like last year, since it won't be playing elsewhere on the internet or TV. My PS/Xbox owning friends (who don't really follow Nintendo apart from watching them during E3) literally thought Nintendo didn't show up till I told them otherwise.
They are streaming on youtube and twitch now. Can you use embed code with livestreams? If yes there shouldn't be an issue with the stream being shown on all gaming sites.

I agree. I was having this conversation with a friend. He says it's all about image and getting people hyped. I say it should be all about the games.

Seems he agrees with MS & Sony, and I agree with Nintendo. The latter part shouldn't shock anyone who knows me here.

Then why were people continually going on about Nintendo not being at E3. Many thought they didn't even put stuff on the show floor last year, because media was reporting lots of "Nintendo skips E3" crap out there.

This isn't looking down their noses at press attention though. If you think so then that is an admission that the spectacle that E3 has become is held to a greater standard than the actual content a press conference brings.

I prefer the digital events I think. No awkward pauses, no random people yelling things in the audience, a much more concise presentation. Don't have to hear "AND NOW, NINTENDO DEVELOPER, SHIGERU MIYAMOTO *dubstep music plays*"

This. Almost everyone will be watching E3 through a stream anyway; might as well tailor your presentation for your biggest audience.

Also, about the stream quality: Watch the stream on Nintendo's YouTube channel. I had two one second hitches during the Smash Direct and zero during every other Direct. The website version is a pile of dicks.

Super stoked about the Smash @ BB program. Hope they have it at more than one location this year...the line was out the door last summer, hundreds of people.

I'm glad I caught this, just before I went to sleep,
in bed on my Wii U Gamepad
.

While I'm sad they won't be doing a conference, they're obviously full of confidence about what they have up their sleeve if this video is anything to go by, and it was more entertaining and exciting than anything I've seen out of them for a while.

If the announcements are good, I'm not sure they -or we- need E3 as far as Nintendo is concerned.

Can't wait to see more of Zelda U at this event.

More? We've seen nothing so far! :0 I'm betting it resembles nothing we saw at the Wii U unveiling. I'm sure that demo was done by another dev team just as a tech demo "what if" scenario. It's going to look radically different I feel. Think GCN demo to Wind Waker. That doesn't speak of the technical side btw, I'm sure it'll blow everyone away. Just the aesthetics will be different I think. I'm excited either way.

They will for the US and Japanese streams at least. I think I'll probably just watch the US one this time if Nintendo Europe are going to keep using Ustream (as they are at the moment).

What if the 'Digital Event' is a high-energy recorded show that's streamed during E3, just not held at an E3 venue?

What would be so bad about that compared to a 'proper' conference?

EDIT:

They are already in the nokia theatre. Watch a stream of them showing their digital event there, which they will do, and there you have your press conference. ^^

Yep.

They've been using Youtube for Directs for a few months now, and they finally added a Twitch channel in time for the Smash Direct. I think all the bases are covered so that we never have to use Ustream ever again.

But are they really? Last year while we were watching the Direct, journos were at Nintendo's booth playing games.

Maybe they aren't. Maybe they have numbers that totally bear out their decision to not have a live press event. I would be surprised if that was the case. I would likewise be surprised if a lot of the bigger, broader press outlets that aren't keyed into traditional gamers pick up a lot of Nintendo headlines if there is no conference. There's a worth to that. If nothing else, it makes them look non-competitive with their competitors. Who knows though? Maybe they think that's a good thing.

That seems like a totally fine solution. I suppose it would be more difficult to wrangle press, but it certainly would make things easier from a spotlight perspective. Although, you might not get some of the bigger press outlets to show up to a one off video game conference. (I'm talking about traditional news sites that typically write about games and announcements pretty much only during E3 since it comes off as a genuinely big, newsworthy event.)

This isn't looking down their noses at press attention though. If you think so then that is an admission that the spectacle that E3 has become is held to a greater standard than the actual content a press conference brings.

I didn't realize anyone was under the impression E3 was anything but a spectacle. That's the whole point. Get everyone, gamer, casual, and general public, all looking in your direction at the same time because, wow look at all those screens and graphics! Of course there would be more efficient ways to deliver "actual content" than a press conference. The point of the conference is to drum up headlines and excitement in the biggest way possible. But from an advertising and marketing perspective, that's a worthwhile venture.

When you say "media," what do you mean? Surely not mainstream media, because I guarantee that wasn't a story. Do you mean enthusiast media? Like the media that would already totally know that there was a presence on the floor and a streamed announcement reel and would only make up stories that say Nintendo Skips E3 to garner tons of pageviews and whip everyone's jizz up until it was airy and emulsified?

That media?

Oh right

The thing is events like space world and E3 cost a lot of money. So why spend the money running a mini E3 when you can attend one someone already paid for more or less?
