100 indies in the works for PS3, PS4 and Vita

Adam Boyes, VP of Publisher and Developer Relations at PlayStation, shared some pretty interesting stats at their PlayStation Indie Event today. It seems like they're starting big and getting even bigger with their indie program.

1,000+ developers are licensed to self-publish now for PlayStation. 20 million games have been sold, with a console attachment average of three games per unit. For the PS4 they're at 21 self-published titles since launch now and growing.

And these games are doing well! Outlast has been downloaded 1.8 million times, for example. Don't Starve has been downloaded over a million times. Warframe is the second most downloaded item on the PlayStation Store, second only to Netflix.

PS Plus helps these games out, sure. But these numbers are impressive any way you look at them.

We'll likely see more numbers like this soon, as Boyes says that there are over 100 games in development.

Going with a straightforward X86 architecture was the smartest thing Sony's ever done. I'm loving all these indie games.

This is why the PS4 is the best next gen console for games right now. PS3/Vita doing awesome with the cross buy as well. The proof is right in the games.

I guess the E3 hype is about to start....

For the last 3 years Sony always dropped hype and slowly build up to Megatons before that actual E3 conferance

Fantastic news. I admit I was one of those gamers hesitant and ignoring indie games last gen, but last year and specifically with my vita I have learned to appreciate them. I still wont blindly buy an indie game if its not fun and just artsy. I already got burned by braid, journey and unfinished swan. Hotline miami, spelunky, guacamelee etc.. Are more up my alley.

That sounds great, it's really nice to see this type of growth so early. I hope a good chunk of those 1,000+ devs are focusing on VR... I just feel like indie devs are going to be much more than a niche community making smaller games in the years to come and a big part of that will be because of VR, it will become a relatively even playing field against the major pubs, and with that I think that is a huge win for gamers.

I understand that people play them on their PC, but PS4 is my main source for playing games now, and I welcome any games that make their way onto the platform. Keep it up Sony!

More exposure for indie games is definitely a good thing. I hope they all find success on Sony's platforms.

Nothing beats sitting back on a nice comfy couch playing an Indie. I have dozens in my steam folder I haven't even tried, mostly because I work on a PC all day.

As long as the PSN doesn't turn into shovelware-shit land, like Steam.

Or end up with a bunch of $15 to $20 games that I can play on my phone for $3. I'm not a fan of the grind to get 3 gold stars paradigm. But a good game that offers decent challenge and good gameplay, bring it on.

I do not have a Playstation 4, but I did own a Vita for a few months and was very disappointed with the web interface for the PSN store. Now that PSN is going to be dealing with a firehose of new titles every week, a world class web portal to the store seems like a necessity rather than a luxury. Its true that on the console side of the service they can promote quality titles through curation, but in a few years I can't help but fear more.. advanced measures will be required to sift through the amount of content on the service.

Feels like I'm back in the Nes and snes era, feels good.

Seriously, as someone who loves 16-bit games, this is nirvana. I'm not a PC gamer, I like to play games on PS4. Seeing all these brilliant indie games (many of them in 16-bit style, enhanced by the power of modern hardware) makes me so happy. If this gen is a shitton of awesome indies, Sony's own great AAA games and a bunch of high quality 3rd party AAA's, it might go down as my favorite gen.

Boyes and his team putting in some major work. I applaud them for reaching out to indies and getting a ton of them on board.

I'm sure they're reading this thread, thank you guys for putting in the effort to bring so many awesome indies to the platform.

I don't know if there is a precedent for this, but I get the feeling these are going to be long lasting relationships between Sony and these devs. They'll grow into bigger studios as the generation(s) continue, and probably feel a 'comfortability' with the PS platform.

So many intelligent decisions by Sony.

Lol.

x86 itself has very little to do with it, indies are unlikely to code in assembler so they just use a different compiler. Their SDK on the otherhand is probably much much easier to use :)

Can't deny it, it's been a good deal. Without PS+ I'm not sure I would've known about a lot of these so it's definitely great for indies. Great for Sony too, the indies are really helping to fill out the calendar while first and third parties are in development

This argument...It's like look, bruh bruh: There's a billion shitty music albums in the world, a billion shitty movies, a billion shitty books...Do you need a curator for those? Do you need to depend on Amazon to tell you what good albums are allowed onto the market?

We don't need chaperones telling us what games should come out on consoles, or PC for that matter. Everyone should be allowed to publish. LET THE GAMES FLOW.
