PS4 System Update 1.70 is Live

by "folders" people are probably just talking about having more top level tiles like apps where its one tile and you drill down into a bunch of tiles associated with it. describing it as folders is just easier...but i think the former is what people want functionality wise

Yes this is exactly it.

My ideal implementation is to let us "tag" our games. So say I have FFXIV and Dragon Age, and I tag both as RPG, then I'll get a top level tile (that I can customize with my own square icon. I'd probably make a blue/white shield and sword icon in the style of the other top level tiles.) titled "RPG" and when I drill down into it, I'll see FFXIV and DA within it, like how the media top level tile shows Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, IGN, etc. within it.

The reason I want tags is so I can put a single game into multiple "folders". For example Dragon Age as RPG and WRPG.

I feel like "Library" should be the left most tile, always. After that just keep my most recent. But it's silly to have to scroll to the right for so long to get to a game on the HDD I might not have played in awhile. At this point I have almost 35 icons I think on that bar. That's only within 6 months of the machine being out.

An easy solution is just having "Library" next to "What's New", and letting everything else just accumulate to the right as it has been doing.

What's New could be the default, middle icon, to the right have the most recently used apps and games in order and to the left of What's New have categories/folders.

the old bug that i had pre-1.70 was that it recorded the wrong footage when pressing the Share button, typically the start of the gaming session. Now what happens is the PS4 will simply not record the footage at all, it wont give me a Square button prompt. this varies too, and seems to work occasionally.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem or an entirely new bug. this has happened with 15 minute pre-set and the 1 minute pre-set.
It's the same bug, except now it probably checks to see how old it is before saving it (thus not saving anything at all now). They've tried to brush it under the rug. Completely absurd and a huge piss off. Feature is useless.

Mine was always recording the last 15min of gameplay.
People tell me this and are either lying or don't understand the problem. It happens to everyone who uses it enough to recognize it.

The UI is a clusterfuck right now, especially video apps.

What I think they should do, considering all the empty space, is to just do netflix style rows, ordered by recent

[Game Library] [Game in Tray] [Game] [Game] [Game] [Game] [Game]
[Video Library] [App] [App] [App] [App] [App] [App]
[Music Library] [Album] [Album] [Album] [Album] [Album] [Album] [Album]

Clicking Library shows you all the things in that category in a grid, sorted by alpha.

Right now with the PS4 it's like you turn it on and have to sort through a cluttered office desk to play or use what you want

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?

So a sideways XMB? XMB really was a masterpiece in terms of organization meeting elegance. It just got a bit bloated with all of its non-traditional apps. Vita UI let's you do whatever you want too. So it's the ideal organizational UI in terms of gaming systems. The PDM is entirely dysfunctional when it comes to accessing games, but great in everything else that matters.

I came in here to say something else entirely but no I don't know what it was.

Oh yeah. Netflix on PS4 is being a whore. I have 8mbps down and it still won't go above 384p SD quality. I have 1080p Super HD bandwidth dammit !!

I'd captured over 10 videos without issue before it happened to me. It's still only happened the once, but all my recordings are in ACIV. BF4 sounds like it has more issues than other games.

This makes me think it's a game coding issue, more than a system issue. A game turning off the recording, then missing the call to turn it back on could easily be missed by QA.

It's practically the opposite for me. I guess I play just 2-3 things at a time, and the PS4's stupidly simple app line organizing system works incredibly well, despite all odds. Yeah, there's stuff all the way to the right, but I don't start them ever anyway. On the other hand, stuff that I actually use is just always *there* and I don't even have to think or move a finger to have them within reach. On PS3 I wasted hours upon hours organizing games into folders, adding video icons to videos etc. So much wasted time, and for what really? Just so that I can have a quicker access to something I never even play anyway.

at the very least as a temporary concession (while they work to fix up the ui) they should utilize the l/r triggers or bumpers so that you can navigate the tiles more quickly

Pretty sure I tried this too but I will try it again when I get home.

Amazingly, turning off Deep Color fixed my PS4 audio problems through my hdmi switcher.

Is there any technological reason besides a system software bug that might be causing this?

I think the current setup would be fantastic with a few minor, but high impact changes.

- Add sorting methods to the Library.
- Add the ability to delete/hide items from the Library (Demos/Betas, Video Apps).
- Add the ability to limit the number of games that show on the Content Bar to the most recently used 5, 10, 15, or 20 games.
- Add the ability to pin Apps/Games to specific points on the bar. Pinned games take up one of the "most recently used games" slots.

Those changes would make a world of difference while leaving the UI more or less how it is. Something like this needs to happen by this fall, or that bar is going to be a completely unmanageable mess with all of the games coming out. I know this isn't a huge deal for people that buy physical copies, but for those of us that are digital only, it is an absolute must.

I didn't have too much of a problem with the light bar. It was a little too bright maybe and I'm sure it has quite a bit to do with the abysmal battery life but still, nothing too major.

That said, I definitely changed it to the dimmest setting. I think it actually looks more pleasant and cooler with it dimmer.

I'm still baffled why they don't let you completely turn it off but at least it's something.

I came here to post the same thing, turned off Deep Color and just in case changed the audio type to DTS and so far no audio problems at all. Played a little bit of Infamous, Trials Fusion and NBA2K14; everything works great!

Any reason why they don't allow us to customize our own settings?

Yeah, I seen it was working for everyone elses problems so I decided to give it a shot lol. Glad it worked for you too!

I had a lot of problems last night. Basically I would just have a black screen, but the sound was still working (could navigate around and hear the menu noises).

Using a different HDMI port on my tv worked (weirdly), but I seem to have fixed the issue this morning by turning off HDCP.

So using a different hdmi port and going directly into my tv works. But going through the receiver it doesn't work. It's trying to output a strange 2880 x 1080 resolution. Even turning off hdcp didn't matter. I don't get how a firmware updates screwed that up but don't really want to run with speakers from tv for audio instead of the 5.1. Any other ideas from anyone that had this issue?

This from the Plex Web forums got my videos working on my PS4 again:

Try the following in your PS4 browser:

-Go to Settings
-Go to 'Player'
-Click 'Show Advanced'
-Enable the 'Prefer AAC Audio' option

Yay.

Go into your Netflix pc account and make sure you have it set to do hd streams. I had this disabled when I had my terrible 3mbps dsl.

it's entirely possible it's game related but one of my friends has tested and reported the bug in all his games, the only ones that worked without issues are Resogun and Don't Starve.

Side note: Why does everyone keep asking for "folders"? Folders would look completely out of place on this UI. They already have a good system in place with the Library, they just need to further develop it with sorting options and the ability to hide/remove items such as demos, Betas, and apps that already have their own Apps Library.

No.

On my PS3, here are some of the folders that I have: PS3 Retail Games, PS3 Games, Retro Game, PS3 Demos, PS1 Games, PS2 Games. I can sort my games how I want them sorted.

Throwing everything into one bin doesn't fix anything, even if you can sort or filter, unless those options are powerful and fast.

Think about the TV & Media Services option. It's an icon in the main list, that then opens up into a grid of things. Wouldn't even have to be a grid - just one new horizontal live of items, only those things that you've put into that "folder".

Absolutely no reason such options would look out of place on this UI, because the UI is already doing this in other ways.

Yeah. They're teasing us with that media apps folder!
I also have several folders on my PS3. It's great.

Whenever my updates fail, pre firmware I could simply click the item that failed and simply restart. Post firmware they totally removed this and just goes to either suggested actions and an ok....anyone else know how to resume it without deleting and starting. Seems like a step backward

If anyone took pics of the Blu-ray player UI before 1.70 it'd be nice to compare. I don't remember it looking quite this polished.

They still need to use the PS3's XMB title graphic in place of that low-res disc placeholder though. I'd like it if they brought back the bitrate meter that PS3 has too.

Some nice #driveclub screens there.

On BF4, in share menu, I didn't see the "press square" to save video option, you do seem to be able to upload but not save it to the hard disk for later editing?

When you first choose to upload, it usually saves it permanently then as well?

After the update, there's this "save screenshot" "save clip" options visible in the footer for some games but I now can't see the "save video clip" option on BF4 (I've set my clip times to 5 mins, btw). So to save the clip without uploading, I just select upload than not upload? That'd not be as intuitive as the "save clip" option. Or simply entering the share menu saves the video clip? But that'd cause to much waste of space as I may not go to that menu to save video clips exclusively..

Guys, is anyone else's connection to PSN super slow?

I'm trying to download the new Vita firmware but it says it's gonna take 85 minutes (and it really looks like it will). This never happened before.

That's what I'm suggesting if the SQUARE button prompt doesn't show up, as a workaround. I haven't tried it myself because I haven't had the SQUARE prompt not show up yet.

Anyone having problems with the Automatic Video Reocording?

The 1st time I got my PS4 everything was almost fine. It was recording constantly my last 15 minutes, besides sometimes it just recorded 5~13 minutes. After a certain update it stopped recording any minute after the first 15 minutes, so if I wanted anything recorded after that, I had to record it manually. But now, after this last update, it doesnt record autommaticaly anything... I play as much as I want and when I check the share options to see what was recorded it doesnt have anything (except if I started the recording manually).

Am I missing something in this new update? Is it a bug or they retrocessed that funciton?

Also I cant see the Square button to Save Video Clip. And I didnt noticed anything different for saving screenhot, since just from pressing the Share Button it saves atuommatically just as always... it seems that Triangle Button option to save screenshots is there for nothing.

Or this update is bugged as fuck, or I may be missing lots of things here.

Noticed the PS+ cloud uploads failing last night as well. Hopefully it's down to PSN issues at the time, or they issue a fix pretty quickly.

I've had the cloud upload problem before, ended up just deleting the cloud save and then letting it upload next time, usually sorted itself out then.

So this patch supposedly is the one that let's developers releases smaller patches that would be just the latest instead of the ones that were every previous patch rolled into one now right? Which is why each successive patch got bigger and bigger. And that in the next few months developers will move over to the new patching system but that it isn't an instant change?

Shin-Ra

It may be a while before delta/differential patches take over the cumulative patches we're getting now I imagine, yeah. Assuming 1.70 does add the ability somehow.

One thing I just noticed. If you double tap the share button to record a video manually it will record your next 15 minutes and then save it in the first place... after that, it will continue recording your video automatically. I supose it was meant to record automatically from start, but its still bugged, at least theres an emergency exit for the problem by now. Hope they fix that soon... those auto recording problems are taking long to resolve.

You can change the behaviour of the share button (short/long/double press) from the share settings.

I think he's saying setting a manual start point fixes the typical last 15 minutes recording behaviour even after the first 15 minutes have passed.

What the hell did this update do to the Netflix app? The entire UI is in slow mo!

So I've been searching all over since last night.

Anyways last night I update to 1.7 and immediately play a game of NBA 2k14. The game runs at about 1/4 speed. Then I restart the console, start a quick game, and its running at what appears to be double speed. Kind of hoping 1.7 is the problem, at least I'd know.
