Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Could be that voice chat was an 11th hour addition and couldn't be added into races because those system resources were already devoted to MKTV or something.

Just a guess but... between that, arenaless battle mode and the awkward character roster it seems pretty likely that the end of development for MK8 was super rushed.

Weird to take 2+ years to rush a game, but then it's Nintendo and the first HD Mario Kart.

Didn't they design it so that you have to press a button to use the voice chat? Might be a bit hard to do that during a race. It would only be a lot of "fuck" and less nicer words during the races anyway.

Well first off the current voice chat is for friends only. There wouldn't be any "fucks" or "shits" or "fags" said between friends during a race, now would there? Unless otherwise jokingly, of course.

It is, with that in mind, baffling as to why it's lobby only if it's between friends to begin with. But ah well, I wasn't even intending on using voice chat for this game anyway.

Specific character stats?
Can't wait to play Funky Kart Wii/Metal Mario Kart 7 all over again...

Not exactly. Seems like there are some inbetweens for the weight classes.

2 for light.
2 for medium.
3 for heavy.

It's not unlikely for Bowser and DK to have wario's stats.

Who here uses Heavy characters? I used to use Rosalina a lot in MKWii, but I stopped after a while because the slow acceleration began to bother me. You get hit and slowed down by items so much and the lack of acceleration was annoying.

Yeah, that's the problem I have. I understand they want to protect the kids from random players foul language but come on at least let us use in race chat if we are playing with friends.

Some of the design choices Nintendo makes are just confusing for no reason. I want to get excited for these games but in the back of my mind I'm always thinking "Ok now how is Nintendo gonna muck up this experience".

I had no choice with Waluigi in MKW. I always preferred Mediums, so it sucks to see him on the Heavy train again. He fortunately had a very high acceleration stat there, so I never really dealt with the problem you mentioned, lol. Regardless of that not being the case in MK8, I'll be maining him once again. ...Still wish he was a Medium though.

In MKWii it wasn't a problem because you could go back to max speed with a stand-still mini turbo (A+B buttons).

I like heavy characters because they get pushed less online, where it's often a bumpfest.

I lovingly call my friends fuck-shit-fags all of the time!

Usually use Diddy, Dry Bones, or Koopa Troopa but seeing as the first two are not in this game I'm likely to pick up Wario or DK and then my medium character is probably going to be one of the Koppalings (whoever is medium weight among them lol).

I never used heavies much otherwise, except in MK64 where I used DK and I guess I might have used Funky a little in Wii but not much. I definitely know your pain, though as I did pick Wario from time to time in MKDS and it suuuuucked when you got hit.

I'm more of a midweight and lightweight fan. And Wii had stand still mini turbos which made the acceleration stat almost useless lol.

Edit: Beaten.

We don't really know how long the game's been in development for, do we? It was unveiled in 2013 and between that point and the next preview build, there were some pretty clear graphical upgrades so it wouldn't surprise me if that was fairly early on.

And I'm not saying that the entire game was rushed, just the last stretch of development. We saw nothing of battle mode until this recent blowout which was final code and that's devoid of any original content. Since the Koopalings trailer, we only saw five additional characters - Lakitu (already modeled and featured in the game in his usual role), Shy Guy (already modeled and shows up in the scenery in a few courses), Metal Mario (using Mario's model), Pink Gold Peach (using Peach's model), and Baby Rosalina (who could very likely be based off of Baby Peach/Daisy's model). It seems like crunch time hit them hard and they were desperate to have this out over the summer for Wii U.

I tend to stick with Lightweight & Mediumweight drivers, so Baby Luigi, Daisy, Lemmy, Ludwing, & my Mii are going to be the characters I'll be using the most. Morton Jr. is also one of my favourite Koopaling, so I'll pick him every so-often.

Aww yiss, motherfucking polished ass.

The lack of voice chat mainly seems like a design decision. It sounds like a good idea until you get race after race with some jerk or the other who abuses the feature in one way or another. That's already bad enough in cooperative online paly games, where voice chat seems necessary, and Mario Kart just isn't that type of game. So imagine how negative an impact that could have!

I think that they could have at least made the feature available in friends-only online matches, but I'm sure getting everything right is a bit more complex(and time consuming) than we'd like to imagine.

And yeah, da hell is up with the lame battle mode? It was prime time to bring back those N64 classic maps. Future DLC maybe?

MKDS, Wii and 7 already featured three of the N64 maps (Block Fort, Skyscraper and Big Donut respectively). The only one left is Double Deck.

Formatting and uploading some new footage shortly. Have footage of Yoshi Valley, Rainbow Road 64, Rainbow Road, and Melody Motorway with Wario in a bug car and Metal Mario in a shoe.

It bothers me that they added Babies and Metal Peach... I mean would it be so wrong to bring in Pit, Samus etc.? I know they are not MARIO characters but I thought is was time to break the mold already. Other then that if this is as good as 7, I will be playing this for a long time.

I was kinda confused for a few secs. Never understood why they change the names of the tracks sometimes. :/

My theory can be that maybe they had plans since the first day of development to add arenas and additional characters through DLC ala Pikmin 3 so they can work into that stuff later to focus on developing a great racing gameplay experience first. Most of the developers at Nintendo work on 2 or sometimes 3 games at the same time (Dem efficiency) so they need to split every single part of the development very carefully to distribute it to those developers available. I'm so looking forward to read the new Iwata's Ask to really know how the development of MK8 was. Who knows maybe there they hint at some kind of DLC thing related.
