Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

I like the anti-gravity on Toad's Turnpike. Gives the stage a new element by allowing players to glide the walls. But they also made a number of improvements to that stage with car ramps and flying over an overpass.

Yes, I forgot to mention Toad's Turnpike and PPS as tracks with good anti-gravity implementation.

Nate is this game more based on skill than luck? Been playing a ton of MK7 lately and been getting some really unlucky situations and losing a ton.

Music Park still has that relevance of being "new" in terms of design considering MK7 is not even 3 years old since it was released. Maybe that's why Nintendo didn't go crazy on adding tons of changes/additions to that track. It is one of my favorite tracks on MK7 so I'm veery glad to see it back in MK8.

Pre-load or straight up buy?

This plan is the only way I would ever go digital over physical.
Best Buy for the win GCU deal $48 + $10 gas card + RZ credit.

They let you download it and play it straight away. If you wanted the physical copy you had to wait another 2 weeks.

I might have missed something.. What's "GCU deal"?

EDIT: Oh, Gamer's Club.

Any news on Automatic and Manual modes. Kids love Mario Kart and some of the younger ones can't drift as well. Automatic returning would help then learn and play, unless things changed enough where automatic is unnecessary now?

Gamexplain confirmed that Automatic is gone.

Gamexplain confirmed that Automatic is gone.

This is inexact. Since MK7 Automatic and Manual have been merged, thus if you turn sharply without starting a drift, the game will automatically drift for you. In MK8 what's new is that such drifts can also charge mini-turbos just like manual drifts.

Edit: ^^ Damn you, Potion :P

They're lying.
Now you can use both automatic and manual drift simultaneously. Whatever works the best for you.
I don't get it..Andre seems to be such a Mario Kart geek but then he's so clueless in some aspects.. even worse because he already played the game and should know better.

well he's probably always drifting manually so since there's not an option to switch he probably didn't realize they'd been merged. or at least that's my best guess lol

Oh alright, thanks!

I've always subconsciously drifted, but for many kids Mario Kart Wii was their first Mario Kart game so it did raise some concern.

I'm guessing with this change, the drift button is practically useless except for hops and tricks. Unless you get longer/better mini-turbo boosts if you do it manually. Regardless I'm probably gonna end up doing it subconsciously again.

I just noticed that the trees around the track bear the berries from Super Mario World. I love everything about this remake.

Nice videos, thanks everyone!

I wonder if the right, left, through the bridge/tunnel (bridge is no longer there in the remake) is still the fastest way on Yoshi's Valley.
Actually the best path was the right-left-right one, however it was really tricky because of the roaming hedgehogs (which are now gone), which is why almost everyone preferred the path you mentioned.

For once, I'm glad they didn't shove anti-gravity down our throats in every single retro track.
All the anti-gravity sections in retro tracks feel forced, tacky and cheap due to their old nature.

Their attempts in Mario Circuit, DK Jungle and Sherbet Land were lame tbqh... the only one that got it right was Rainbow Road
I kind of see where you're going. For Mario Circuit the anti-grav a good addition IMO because if it wasn't for it we would have two long straights instead which would have be boring. But with other examples like DK Jungle it's definitely dispensable. Anyway the anti-grav modifications haven't made any track worse so I'm just fine with them. I wouldn't really know what to change in Music Park anyway, to be honest.

We do not know the details yet but it's pretty obvious that manual drifts remain superior, in that the sparks charge faster and most importantly you can adjust how tight the angle is at any point during the drift (by counter-steering).

There were some advantages to auto in MK Wii using top speed karts/bikes. When slightly turning (analog not fully tilted) using auto does not lose speed at all, while manual does lose slight speed. Manual users don't usually notice the difference because they would jump to initiate the drift to get the sparks, only when they do slight adjustments/correction do they lose speed, giving the illusion that auto was faster sometimes. (i think they did this because holding the wheel "lazily" would be slightly tilted on an analog control, so they would lose speed in manual. Being with auto with the wheel would make users with the wheel not lose speed when they hold the wheel slightly tilted left or right)

Back on Mario Kart Wii , players on manual sometimes would go "boost crazy" thinking they have to get mini turbo on every curve which makes some of their racing lines a bit wider, while an auto player would concentrate on sharp optimal racing lines, which makes them look faster in some situations. Of course mini boosts win out in the end. But my theory is: Optimal racing line with boosts > Optimal racing line with auto > Moderate racing line with boosts > Moderate racing line with auto. Since auto users didn't have to worry bout boosts, they can just concentrate on getting the best line possible. (of course inward sharp drifting bikes killed this, since they can get the best sharp racing line, with boosts, and wheelie right after lol)

Interesting they combined the two, so driving "auto" in 8 will be the same speed in those slight turns, with the ability to get the boost (never played 7) So it's very interesting to me, being an auto user in Mario Kart Wii, making some of those manual users wonder "how come that auto user with the golden wheel so fast?!" lol =]

I didn't really play Mario Kart Wii enough to have a real preference, and Mario Kart 7 didn't have bikes, so.. I really don't know. I prefer vehicles that have good acceleration and nice handling, so bikes might be up my alley - not sure how they are balanced in MK8.

I wonder, Nate, can you post vids of the bikes and that B one kart body?

I can try to do that tomorrow.

Thanks! Did you ever try driving backwards?
Can drive a short distance backwards before Lakitu picks you up and faces you in the correct direction.

Can you show us an example of how mktv will work.
Here are some general details of MKTV: clips of your 12 most recent races, 6 of your selected favorites, 12 Global favorites, and 12 recent Global races. I'll do a short video showing off MKTV more but wanted to share just these basics with everyone now.

New screen I saw on Miiverse that looked pretty cool:

Awesome no more trolling online with people going backwards.

Sorry if this has been asked (Or already answered numerous times), but in Tournaments, are you able to choose whatever tracks you want? Like, could I race in a tournament with Retro tracks only, or all 32 tracks for example?

So.....Bikes or Karts?

#TeamBike

I liked bikes in MKWii, but I like MK7 more, so I don't know. There's no wheelie in MK8, so that might be a deal-breaker. I think I just like what's new, so I might prefer ATVs this time.

The roster (and possible lack of battle arenas) are really the only thing souring this game for me at this point. Everything else looks fantastic, and I wish Nintendo mandated that every other development team had to follow the MK team's approach to online
besides maybe the limited use of voice chat
.

While it'd be sleazy for Nintendo to do this, I would sadly probably dish out cash for something like a Kong family or Wario Ware character pack. Not if it's just more metal variations though, that aspect of MK7 and MK8 is super dumb.

I'd like to know this as well. It'd be cool to make an N64 Cup with Toad's Turnpike, Royal Raceway, Yoshi Valley and Rainbow Road 64.

That looks pretty good.

So is there anything that you can't talk about in this game yet? It seems nintendo's letting people do whatever.

N64 Rainbow Road looks and sounds so magical. The details and all the stuff in the background are so nice. I need this goddamn game.

I really like the musical detail with each track. Like in Electrodrome, where depending on the surface you're riding on, it will play a different modifier over the music. Or in Cloudtop Cruise where a guitar cuts in whenever you go inside the storm cloud.

Also, dat Dolphin Shoals. This is truly the Year of the Sax.

Pretty open to discuss anything. Our only limitation is the amount of footage we can share.

Does that mean you can tell us if there are any secret racers? The line up is...underwhelming to say the least, so a hidden racer or two would be nice (E. Gad, Nabbit, or any of the Kongs/WarioWare characters would be awesome additions to Mario Kart :)).

I haven't unlocked everything yet, so I couldn't say either way.

Do you know if you can fill the race with CPU drivers when playing with one or more friends?
You couldn't in MKWii iirc.
I will check on this tonight as well and let you know.

No. In MK7 you lose speed if you turn while not under the effect of any kind of turbo and while not drifting. Thus, since auto drifts only start if you turn sharply (i.e. pushing control stick left or right during at least a few tenths of second), you'll lose speed every time you're trying to slightly adjust direction like if you were driving "auto" in the style of Mario Kart Wii. Hopefully that explanation isn't too confusing x)
