Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

I really despise "metal" characters. With all the good choice we have in MK8, what was the need to put in these nonsense monochromatic clones? I feel they can ruin a bit the game aesthetics.

On another matter, super-heavyweight are my class of choice since SMK, and I'm a bit let down that DK doesn't belong there. DK and Wario had to be swapped imho. Luckily, besides Bowser, there's the super cool Morton!

Saw this, but haven't been able to get any online racing in. Only had a handful of online racers done earlier today before this question was asked. Hope to get more online time in tomorrow.

Someone asked about Rainbow Road and if I could fall off the top platform to the bottom platform; the answer is yes - at least towards the start of it.

Is it possible on the N64 RR to cross the gap to the left at the start, maybe using that boost pad at an angle? I'm guessing no, but the amount of friendships that died from that jump...

They may not be the fastest anymore, but they still have the benefit of a higher top speed and a smaller hitbox. You'll probably see them around.

A slightly smaller hitbox makes no difference in practice.

What does make a difference is that the Super-Heavyweights have more speed and less handling (which means faster miniturbo charging, so that's a good thing provided you can make it around any given corner), while regular Heavyweights have more acceleration and grip. The only difference is weight, which is the least important stat. There will likely be hidden stats to make up for this like with MK7, but they're absolutely not better than the other two heavyweight classes at the moment.

Ha, this was always fun to pull off. There were some other amazing shortcuts in MK64 (Wario Stadium, Mario Raceway, etc), but Rainbow Road was the only one I could pull off consistently.

that reminds me that I need to clean up my friends fridge!
The 100 People limit is going to be a tight call for this game.
Ha, I think I still have a good amount of space

I swear if one of my friends did that we would be fighting! CHEATING!

I think Nintendo is in lock down mode for (unwanted) shortcuts in Mario Kart since that one shortcut in MK7. I mean... they've patched it out and made the update mandatory to play online.

Plus, you're not even 3 feet away off track when Lakitu is already picking you up.

Haha, I remember this. I was the only one from my group of friends who could consistently pull it off, and as such I always had to promise that I wouldn't do it.

Odd that DK isn't in the same group as Bowser and Wario!?.

And seriously no Diddy, Dixie or Lanky Kong?????.......what a missed opportunity. Have they announced DLC, they have to right...RIGHT?
I would think so.
I've never realised that the big characters are faster?! I've always avoided using them because I thought they were slow!

How many fps in splitscreen is what I want to know. And can one player play with only the gamepad and two other play with the screen split in two?

Impossible because Lakitu picks you up as soon as you go ever slightly out-of-bounds.
Even if it wasn't for Lakitu, that would make you skip a checkpoint gate which means the lap wouldn't count. Such a shortcut would have been patched in one week anyway.

Also, why posting the how so inferior version of the shortcut instead of the glorious one ? :P

Wait... you can play GP in 2-Player again?
4 players even ! I'm totally going to play with my family on release
and unlock all the vehicle parts 4 times faster

So the guys posting all the information here already have review copies?

Any info on Unlockables? Characters, Courses, Arenas, Parts?

Welp, got my Wii U from Craigslist yesterday.

Basic, $150 with a Wii U Pro Controller.

Obviously a bit off topic but it's like 20% Mario 3D Land, 80% Mario Kart for me.

Honestly if the Wii U only played this game and still had VC/Wii BC, that's probably worth $150 for me.

Mario Kart is the only game most of my lame IRL friends will play lol.

I'm not sure if you guys realize how big this game is. Granted I work at a software company, but EVERYBODY is talking about this game. EVERYBODY.

Last Friday, a roommate had a friend over, and as the friend was leaving, I overheard him saying, "Yeah, we'll have to schedule a tie-breaker for our 2 FIFA games with Mario Kart. Though I might be a little rusty, and we'll need to buy a couple of Wii U Pro controllers.", implying that he was planning on buying MK8 and controllers for MY system. (My roommates were also planning on buying the game after Reddit told them to care, too).

I'm almost afraid we're going to hit the 30th and people are going to show up with like 5 copies of Mario Kart 8.

Between MK8, Zelda: WW HD remaster, and Super Mario 3D World, I am already satisfied with my console-purchase. Good to be back with Nintendo :)

So, I haven't played MK in a long time...How do the cart stats interact with driver stats? Does one hold more value than the other? What even are the cart stats? Trying to figure out what combo I want to try first!

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't work given how they're cracking down on shortcuts like that across the board.

I also knew that jump existed...but I would much rather post the one I am actually able to do. :P

Maybe the reviewers will be able to give the game a little extra time for their reviews, considering how early review copies went out.

Not holding my breath though.

REview copies are out a little early, no?

Yeah, this definitely seems earlier than usual. Wonder if Nintendo finished up slightly earlier than anticipated or something. Seems like the game must have gone gold weeks ago, and still doesn't release for the better part of a month.

The servers aren't online? That's weird.

Do we know when the embargo will end?

Mario Kart 8 1080p/60fps as per eurogamer even in 2 players mode :O....!!!!!

http://mynintendonews.com/2014/05/0...0p-and-60fps-even-in-two-player-split-screen/

The 60FPS at 2 players part we already knew, but 1080p? Really? Isn't it 720p?

EDIT: That's a month old, too. I think 720p was confirmed since.

So.....Bikes or Karts?

#TeamBike

Bikes, though I'll try both.

Mario Kart Wii was the first and only MK game I became incredibly addicted too. I loved the courses, but it was the Mach Bike that made that game really something. Cornering was hard at first, but I became used to it and eventually it's all I ever used. Fantastic bike. I always wished I could use it with Waluigi, but alas. He was too heavy. I went with the Bowser Bike when I played as him. I'm kind of dissapointed the stats are back in MK8, to be honest. I'd like to play as my favourite character, but with medium stats.

I really hope a Mach Bike tier vehicle is in MK8. I didn't enjoy the 3DS one very much at all. The acceleration felt off and I wasn't a big fan of the new courses. I loved MK Wii so much though. I'm super hyped for MK8, but I have my fingers crossed it's as enjoyable as MK Wii was for me. It's looking like it will be so far, at least.

So last night, I had the chance to play some 4 player of this for about an hour. We raced on 12 of the 16 new tracks (we did not do the 3rd cup, skipped to the last one because we wanted to see Rainbow Road).

I should note that the last Mario Kart game I played more than 10 minutes of was 64, so this seemed like a massive improvement.

Just the few things that stuck out in my head from my time:

-We managed to unlock things through our playing (a Wiggler chasis for your kart was the highlight)
-While it is probably due to the fact it was my first time ever using a WiiU (much less a pro controller), the handling of carts felt a little loose
-The fucking "8" weapon (which gives you 8 different 1 of items) will kill you a bunch because one of them is a Bomb-omb and it is one of the later items you get to use
-When you fall off the track, you are brought back nearly instantaneously- its less than 3 seconds
-The game looks really pretty when looking at the close ups in the highlight real (especially in slow motion), but it picks some really strange highlights most of the time.
-It's REALLY DUMB that you can't do 5 players with the 5th going on the Gamepad. We had 5 people, so we had to take turns. It was annoying.
-The item distribution seems better now- we only saw 1 Blue Shell in the dozen or so races we did

The game is super fun, and the fact that you can play (you have to unlock them though, we only had 3 unlocked) as the Koopa Kids is a massive bonus. Don't think I would buy a WiiU just for this game, but if you have one already it's a no-brainer pick up
