Kinect Sports Rivals |OT| Preseason’s over, it’s time to take sides

Oh well, my parent bought my kids it for Easter so I'll get a chance to mess around with it on Sunday. I think at worst the kids will enjoy it, my oldest loved Kinect 1 games, so if K2 is that much more responsive it everything should be good.

The motion controls are reasonably responsive and accurate in the home setting.

Yes. This was definitely a lot better in Kinect 2. Also the processing lag, whilst still there was a lot better. Good enough for a lot of games.

I never pre-ordered this at all (actually bought it 3 days after release) and I still had the outfits. Maybe playing the pre-season demo counts too.

I wonder if anyone who purchased it digitally within the first two weeks (like with the Day One stuff) got it automatically.

There IS a soccer shoot out event, it was not removed,

The guy manning the booth told me that there are no more mini games for soccer like Kinect sports 1. Just the main event. In original there was the main game (pass and shoot) plus a few fun mini events/challenges. If you own the game, can you kindly state how many games/challenges per sport?

I got the killer instinct costumes as well.

Bought it digitally on april 12th

Only played the preseason once (and didnt unlock anything)

I still don't do it with consistency, but it seems like you have to close your grip after the halfway point between '1' and 'GO'. After '1' but before the halfway mark seems to give the mini-boost.

Got knocked from 1st to 5th on the Australian championship leaderboards. Haven't played in a week so time to get back into the thick of it!

This game is fun, but I'm throwing out my arm in bowling trying to get strikes.

I chose the Viper team, curious what their plans are for the teams. They did a much better job building this out to be a fun single player game giving you challenges to compete in each sport and ramping up the difficulty. I like how they've licensed full songs instead of just snippets like the previous games. The unnecessarily elaborate menu system is very stupid and confusing. I think I'm liking all of the sports except soccer. Having you only play only goalie instead of the whole defense makes the game much less interactive.

got to check this out at a friends house, generally not hugely impressed. the tech seemed actually ok, but the collection of games were pretty weak. i still really enjoy the jet ski mode and wish they dedicated more to that, possibly as a stand alone, as its the only one that feels strong enough for repeat playing.

the gun game portion worked shockingly well (despite being utterly unfun), which was night and day compared to trying to navigate menus with hand gestures. why is this? also, speaking of, why doesnt kinect have you do a quick screen calibration by pointing to the corners of your tv screen so gestures would be more accurate?

So when I jump in climbing, the game's lighting dims and warning appears in the corner saying that it can't see me and that if I want to turn off the notification I should press Y on the controller.

Is there no way to turn off the notification in options or with my voice? Having to pick up the controller, mid-climbing, to turn off the notification every time I play is really dumb.

. . . the collection of games were pretty weak.
This is the primary issue for this installment. Why they didn't throw in all of the old sports and simply add to that list while improving them, I don't know. It hurts the overall feeling of value since I don't feel like I got my money's worth with what's there. They made improvements all around, but adding in old events and minigames should be the first priority aside from tweaking the core set included. It's a disappointing sequel that can only be saved with post-release content.

i dont believe there is. can you angle or place your sensor up higher? it needs to be able to see your outstretched arms and hands in addition to however high up you jump (and however far/close you are). i had similar problems at first but i dont enough encounter them at all any more.

i feel like the sports selection is fine, but as you said, having zero minigames really hurts the game. KS2 lost what i thought were excellent events in boxing and volleyball but added golf and darts. i think if Rare are smart theyll offer up a few classic sports as well as minigames for all existing events for free. Powerstar Golf and PvZ have both had substantial free DLC so im hoping KSR can keep that going. plus Rare have already made it known that theyll be releasing free story content, so i think the chances of that are actually quite high.

I dunno how anyone can praise it. The events are largely terrible, the voice commands barely work (listen, listen, listen, listen, listen , oh fuck this * grabs pad*) The controls are unresponsive and the input lag is terrible. The sensor also sucks at tracking players and is constantly pulling back to that continue screen.

Feel bad I talked my boys out of getting the game they wanted to get this instead.

Sounds like you have to recalibrate the Kinect and maybe your playspace in front of it. I've never had any serious issues with KSR voice commands or tracking.

I have an enormous living room with a huge window illuminating it and calibrated the Kinect before turning the game on.

Strong sunlight coming within view of the playspace will confuse the tracking. Try closing drapes or blacking out the sunlight coming in to test. It's the only way I can use mine in my game room.

This isn't my first dance mate. The blinds are half shut the room is neither too dark nor too bright. If you have one of those sensors that works perfectly then grats, it seems I have the same kind of sensor that the reviewers had.

Well, it did take a few calibrations to get right, so I assume things are just as finicky for others. You don't need even half-lighting at all for KSR outside of initial champion creation for getting the color of the player's face. If your's is truly defective, you should just get it replaced for free.

I havent read too much about the game, but after going through the trouble of doing a proper setup of my own to try it and play it,
I will seriously doubt any review where they say things like you say:

controls are freakin' responsive and accurate.
and about the screen that you are saying, I can guess that it probably happened in hiking when you are somehow jumping with your hands up in the air and so they go out of sensor area. or in a similar condition.

I have a strong opinion on this, because I DID test it thoroughly.

first time I tried the game, I did not bother making an <<atmosphere>> for kinect.
I mean it would say "I cant see the floor/feet", and I would just think to my self "well, I only want to test jetski now so fuck you and move on!"
well, jetski would work, but after 5 minutes I wasnt happy with the fidelity that kinect interpreted my moves, and in one particular instance, it would kind of like "lock" to a slightly right turn status.
I thought "meh, kinect as usual" and switched games.

second time though, I did prepare the space and took the time to make sure the sensor got what it wanted, and the experience was 100% different.
VERY responsive, no missed moves, everything I tried felt satisfactory enough. (much much more than expected)

so, either you have a broken sensor, or you are trying like I did the first time. no third way about it.

For this to be true the Kinect would have to offer 1:1 tracking, have no input lag and work flawlessly with voice controls.

Edit : Not going to debate this topic continuously , I am entirely confident in my ability to setup Kinect correctly and also sure that the unit isn't faulty.

its more like this: for your statement to be true (unresponsive controls and terrible input lag)
either you did not setup properly or the sensor is fucked up ;)

I was one of the guys that were against kinect. hell, i dont even keep it attached to the xbone.
but when something works, it works. and this being the very first example, I already wrote today in another topic that i think ms should keep it in the box and not remove it.

just because it doesnt have 1:1 and zero input lag doesnt mean it doesnt work well for this game, nor that it will never work for other games and applications. i dont know how bad your problems are with this game, but like with previous kinect games, there is a "timing" to everything - one you can very easily adapt to and compensate for. and in any case, the tracking here is MUCH improved and almost entirely independent of how large your play space is (i game in a small bedroom setting with minimal lighting that wouldnt play nice with the original kinect).

anyway, i would say to look into getting a refund if you arent happy with the purchase. if your boys arent enjoying it then theres no use in keeping it, working or not.

It sounds more like lack of calibration on audio part, and increased input lag by the TV. You can tell Kinect 2 is not a mirror, but it should be only slightly off.

The fucking timed achievements in this game.

Who thought it was a good idea to have 10 of them at once with only 10 days to complete them all ?

I only got 2 of them.

Angled any higher up and I'll start losing the floor. I just jump very high when I play so for a brief second I'm off the screen. Being unable to turn off the warning permanently or with voice is a huge oversight.

Having to use the controller, when playing a game that utilizes the kinect is just silly. I wonder what goes through the heads of developers when they do stuff like this. It's like the fitness games for the Wii U that are supposed to get you pumped, utilizing the wii remotes, then expect you to walk over to the Wii U's gamepad in between workouts.

I agree. It's hard to believe this "feature" made it through beta testing as is. I'm sure they'll fix it in the first patch,

I wonder about the sales of this game.

I think they will be a very important "signal" for Microsoft about the future of Kinect.

I played the game this weekend and i don't understand how Rare made a worst kinect sports than the first two.

MS said it worked great in dark conditions but it's not true. In my case i had a lot of frustration with the game. Jet Ski didn't work well for me, most of the time the sensor thinks i'm leaning right when i'm leaning left. Soccer is damn boring and imo worst than the one in the first Kinect Sports. Bowling is ok but we've been there many times before. Climbing is probably my favorite as it was the one that worked the best for me. All in all, i would never recommend the game especially at 60$. Even if it was 30$, it would still be a bad game. It doesn't work all the time and is a frustrating experience more than fun which is not what i look for in a videogame.

MS need to justify the price of kinect, kinect sports is definitely not the answer.

hmm. i can play it just fine in complete darkness (at night, no lights on) with no noticeable decrease in tracking performance. so that bit is definitely true. i'll agree with you on soccer though. it just isnt very fun at all. and im curious about your experience with jet skiing - are you JUST leaning left or right to turn? because it also takes into account the position of your arms relative to your chest and each other. you could be leaning left but have your arms moving in the opposite position. or how far to your side are you leaning? im genuinely curious because ive not had any problems with that event (or any of them, really).

i think its a fine piece of added value for the kinect, along with xbox fitness, twitch streaming/skype, and the various little uses in navigating the OS (voice commands in particular - i dont use gestures in the menus).

Im enjoying it. I didn't expect to, but I am.

Had some issues with climbing (mainly as Im tall, so trying to get my whole body to track when I jump was problematic).

Worth remind people that if you register at KSRChampionship.com you get a 5x5 code for a Perfect Dark outfit pack.

An update was available today as well as new purchasable challenge packs. The names and themes of those packs? Rare fans will love them!

Banjo-Kazooie
Battletoads
Blast Corps
Perfect Dark
Viva Pinata

They are $2.99 each and winning them gets you some exclusive outfits, such as a 'Buzzlegum' outfit for winning VP. You'll also be able to be sponsored by them! Join Team dataDyne, Mumbo, and so forth.

I'm loving the connections to their previous IP in this game. We haven't seen this from Rare in quite sometime. Could be a sign of great things to come!

i imagine we'll see more stuff in june, then. new sports, maybe?

So much for sustaining KSR with free DLC. These challenge packs are a bleeping joke. I'm definitely not buying them.

If we're required to purchase new events, I think I'll be done with this series.

One of the game's biggest problems is lack of content and yet they are releasing challenges as overpriced DLC...

So for $3, you get the privilege of challenges to unlock an outfit for 1 sport. What a joke. Of course, I threw $3 down the drain on the banjo bowling costume that I can't unlock because it requires you to spin the ball 10 times and win -- I am lucky if I can get it to recognize spin once in 10 tries, let alone hit something.

Regardless, here is me in my fly pinata outfit:
pinata.png

Micro transactions in full price games have got to stop. This is the top of ridiculousness. This game was extremely low on content for a $60 game and then they release DLC costumes day one. After that they start unlocking further content in the game as even more DLC. Rare and Microsoft have really gone downhill.

Yes, and just to add some constructive criticism...

I would have happily paid $15 for a season pass to get all the post release challenges/costumes instead of them nickel and dining us individually.

I can't get bowling to work for shit. I get no spin on the ball at all and it seems my best tactic is just lining up in the middle and flinging it. So disappointing when in Wii Sports you can put such pinpoint spin on it. Am I just doing this wrong? Wtf.

Works perfectly for me. Can the kinect see your whole body?
