Initial download is only 96.3 MB, but after the servers are up and running you'll need at least 2.6 GB to actually play, according to the app description.
Note that while it can be downloaded the game is unplayable until 5/15's noon Japan time.
The game is only playable on A6 devices and up, meaning support for iPhone 4s and anything before it is out.

Famitsu uploaded a bunch of footage from the game yesterday here: http://app.famitsu.com/20140513_370144/ and here: http://app.famitsu.com/20140514_372898/

Also, I had a look at the app itself, and while there's not much but loading screens and icons on it for now, the folder with the app contents is called "FinalFantasyAgitoj.app"... is the "j" there because there are other versions being developed as well for other languages? Maybe when the game can actually be played more data mining will be possible. EDIT: Also the game runs on Unity, so there's that.

Game is running on Unity? Interesting... I wonder if Square-Enix is planning to do like Level-5 with Wonder Flick, and release the game on consoles later down the road (and if yes, which one)?

And damn, 2GB is huge... that's more than most 3DS game, but then again, with such a tiny resolution on 3DS, it's no wonder smartphones games are bigger.

Welp, still got 12 hours to go. Be interesting to see how this turns out!

Also is this related to Type-0 at all??? It's been so long I forget if they are still related.

Is this trend of "small upfront dl, massive dl once you launch" a new thing or something? The last few iOS games I downloaded all have done this, and I hate it. Download a game, hop on the train, and nope.jpg, hope you have wifi!

So is this just Type-0 on mobiles or is this game some sort of offshoot of it?

It's more like a spinoff sincerely running on a lower budget with re-used assets and cheap-produced cutscenes. Mostly multiplayer stuff. I guess also f2p, or not?

It looks really bad to me. I want the original one.

Apple obviously doesn't want people downloading large files from Appstore since it eats up their bandwidth.
This way the publisher has to provide the bandwidth for the patches.

Uh no, Apple has to agree with the phone carriers what the size limit for Apps over 3G/LTE is and currently it's 100MB. Apple doesn't care about bandwidth.

Nah, there are huge upfront download apps on the store too. They don't want people accidentally eating up their monthly data plan in one go, so there's a 100MB limit over 3G/4G to prevent that. If you're on Wi-Fi you're good to go for multi-gig downloads.

Developers use the small upfront download for discoverability. If someone hears about an app they'd be into, they're more inclined to pull their phone out in the moment to check it out, rather than try to remember later.

Edit: ^Yeah that.

I really don't think it being on Unity warrants it coming to anything outside smart devices, but it is a possibility. If anything it's probably on Unity since it makes it easy for them to launch their games on iOS and Android, since most of their games lately run on Unity.

Unity? Interesting.
Type 0 Vita in Unity?

Yeah, Unity is basically the defacto mobile engine.

The only reason you wouldn't use it is if your game is a port from another platform or you have something that really needs the functionality set of an engine the grade of Unreal or is so incredibly simple Unity's functionality doesn't save you time or effort.

Like EA has Frostbite on mobile now, but they're only using it for Battlefield, whereas most everything else they do is in Unity unless it was a port or on a tech stack built ages ago.

Phones are on a 2-3 year replacement cycle in the vast majority of countries.

This isn't ridiculous at all.

Cutting support for devices that aren't even 3 years old absolutely is ridiculous. That it's the accepted norm only shows how absurd things have become (even though, getting a new phone every 2 years has been common for smartphones since forever). But criticizing how wastefull people are is probably misplaced in this thread. :p

However, is Agito one of the first iOS games to drop support for the 4S? I don't think I've encountered another game without support so far.

How are in-app downloads handled on iOS btw? Do you also need twice the storage space to download something in-game just like when you download something from the app store? If so, you would need to have a whopping 5GB of available space to download Agito on an iPhone.

Or is the game actually 1.3GB and the description takes the amount of storage needed for the installation into account?

So far most signs point to yes from the code to Square's tendency to release mobile games worldwide, especially of the Final Fantasy variety.

As someone on a limited budget, who managed to get a iPhone 4 for free after being under contract for several years, it is a bit of a pain to know that the only way to play a Type-0 game in English would be to upgrade to a new phone and pay money I don't have, lol.

Either way, it would be interesting to see if it did make it over here.

The iOS version of Dragon Quest VIII isn't fully compatible with 4S, while the game does run and it is playable on it the game may randomly crash and such. The app description for Agito literally mentions they can't guarantee the game functioning on a 4S, so I'm guessing it's in a similar position. Maybe someone with a 4S can try when the game is actually playable.

They still haven't brought over Tactics S, though, have they?

Tactics S is a mobage game so it's different, they don't usually bring those over.

I think this is the first thing that I've had any sort of interest in where my 4S just isn't going to cut it. I guess it's time to move on.

Oh yeah... Still waiting for that to come over to NA, also.

Agito dropping the 4S is weird. The game looks like Type-0 running at a higher resolution.

Square Enix's games often have kind of odd requirements from that perspective. Like Theatrhythm also required surprisingly large amounts of hardware to run well.

As someone on a limited budget, who managed to get a iPhone 4 for free after being under contract for several years, it is a bit of a pain to know that the only way to play a Type-0 game in English would be to upgrade to a new phone and pay money I don't have, lol.

I can understand that there are definitely cases where this would be painful and unfortunate for people.

It's just that given when they're launching the game and the rate at which people upgrade, I don't think it's overly harsh.

By the same token, a lot of major publishers are launching games that can only be played on consoles that cost $400 and will have only been out for a year, even if the previous consoles did last a while, the upgrade timeframe expectation post-launch is pretty quick.

Yeah this would be a rarer case in that sense, though usually I believe the GTA PS2 ports required hardware that was very recent, and think the same is true for XCOM.

They still haven't brought over Tactics S, though, have they?
That's a mobage game though, so it's managed by a company who isn't Square Enix.

My understanding is that it's kind of a prequel to Type-0.

I'd get into details about the main concept but you probably wouldn't believe me. So if you don't like spoilers you probably shouldn't read them.

Orience is stuck in a bizarre time loop and FF Agito is the first cycle in 600,104,972 different cycles. Yeah that many. Type 0 being the last one which breaks the chain if you will. Crazy stuff. Lots of convoluted details I'm not gonna go into.

Honestly?
Not at all, even with all its "upgrades" Agito looks like a downgrade compared to Type 0 imo

Add that Agito seems to have battle in little arenas and 2d dialogs....

I think the difference is a bit more obvious in screenshots.

Type-0 had really good use of pre-rendered cutscenes with ingame assets so they often gave off an impression of looking a lot better than the PSP really when handling the game.

That's not to say Agito looks amazing by any means, but it is pushing more in terms of model detail, resolution, and effects.

Type-0 non-pre-rendered scenes:

Agito:
Models, textures and effects are better in Agito(animations look better in Type 0 though) but imo Type 0 had that dark and gritty graphics that created an unique atmosphere and look, at least for a Final Fantasy, Agito instead has a "common" clean and bright graphics, it has nothing of the charisma of Type 0 neither its uniqueness, despite using the same assets.
Add that Type 0 had exploration(battle in levels) while in Agito, academy apart, there seems to be no exploration at all(battles in little arenas, at least from what i saw), Type 0 had aerial battles, an RTS part, dialogues with 3d models etc, all things that Agito doesn't have(at least from what i have seen).

EDIT:
In motion Type 0 battles still look better imo.
Anyway whatever it looks better i hope that an eventual Type 0 Vita looks dark, dirty and spectacular like the original and not brighter, cleaner and less impressive(to me) like Agito.

Isn't that what PS4 and XB1 games are doing (the ones that aren't just ports)?

Going to try and find 2gb of space so I can play, I really should have went with the 64gb model.

Edit: just realized you are probably talking about age of hardware, but still I bet there are people that bought a PS3 last year not knowing the PS4 was coming out, and are disappointed that there at games getting released their system (which was expensive) can't play.

Hmm Unity can be ported easily to any game console... Anyways it actually looks decent, the only thing I am worried about is the camera control. The online coop (in a non MMO Final Fantasy?!) looks fun. Still salty Agito did not make it to US.

So I don't quite understand. It's an SE game but the people who decide whether it can come over or not isn't SE?

I'm not sure what the particulars are like, but it I think mobage itself handles the localization of mobage games.

It is F2P, but I don't know about the rest.

Anyway, I took some screenshots:

I'm playing on an iPhone 5c and it actually doesn't run too well, I was expecting it to be smooth, but it's a bit choppy at times. It's very surprising considering a game which looks a lot better from SE, Bloodmasque, runs at 60 FPS while this one struggles. Battles are surprisingly fun despite being dumbed down from Type-0.
