Rare "evaluating what they want to do next" says Phil Spencer

So what's the point? Rare feels like a hollow shell of its former self and now it's just a name and not the studio that created some of my favorite titles as a kid.

Plus wasn't it Phil Spencer who wouldn't approve a number of titles they pitched that caused said talent to leave? Not saying they would be great games, but I believe he was also the one who decided they'd be better off doing Kinect games, right?
Exactly! Funny how people still hype Rare and talk about "do the next XXX game".
Rare isn't "Nintendo Rare" anymore. Nearly all of them left.
Only the name is left.
The studio should simpy do new IP's. This would help.

Viva Pinata was as good as anything they put out in their Nintendo years.

People really want to see the return of their IP. If those IP were all taken care of by other devs then nobody would care about Rare.

Let them incubate something that is natural to their culture, instead of forcing Rare's legacy onto them. If they can do that while still tapping into Rare's portfolio, then more power to them. But if not, simply shop out the IPs to interested parties.

....You all seriously think that Rare will stop working on Kinect? I mean, Microsoft scrapped every single non-Kinect project Rare worked on during the 360...and instead of Rare making KI, Double Helix did (that isn't a bad thing at all; DH did a wonderful job with the game :D).

I don't think Microsoft even considers Rare 'important' anymore; just a trophy they bought themselves decades back as a "Ha Ha!" to Nintendo :(. I would be estatic to see a proper Banjo, Conker and Perfect Dark tittles by Rare and would love to see some of those scraped prototypes come back to life on X1. I just don't see it happening...if Microsoft gave to shits about Rare, the studio they paid A LOT OF MONEY to own for years, then we cannot expect Rare to make big games for Microsoft.

However, I could see Rare's IP's be handed down to other developers. For example, Cryteck UK (the former TimeSplinters team) to work on a new Perfect Dark, Insomniac to work on Jet Force Gemini or Banjo (they would be great fits :D), WayFoward to work on Battletoads (I think so...they did a good job with that Double Dragon game, right?), and Conker to...man, how could work on this? (I mean, that was a one time thing, and Cris is the heart and soul of that game...anything thing Conker-related being made wouldn't be the same without him :().

I just Microsoft does something with Rare...they are a great studio that are just doing nothing :(...

Why can't they still develop old IP. Double Helix did it very well with Killer Instinct.

Microsoft could have easily handed Rare's IPs off to another developer at any time, but they didn't. I'm sure they just believe that it doesn't fit their "brand"... probably right, too.

Rare should go on a pub crawl and recruit anybody who seems like a decent writer - the odds are that they could knock up something worth playing. Witty and entertaining scripts are the thing that has truly been missing with them for the past decade, and need to make a return far more than any specific characters.

Yeah, they're still dead.

Just let them make a "core" game again so people can shut up.

the Rare we loved is dead, talent scattered in the wind. MS just resurrected Killer Instinct and let another studio work on it, twice.

I'd rather see Rare establish itself with new things going forward instead of digging up old franchises for nostalgia.

There you go. Rare today is not the same as the Rare in the past. Even if they did reboot one of the old franchises, I'd still have questions about it's quality.

Give us one of your old IPs that everybody like or give them to another developer like with Killer Instinct! I want Banjo-Fourie dammit!

Rude...

Rare just had a Game Jam day where people submitted game ideas. Imagining all the pitches!

So anything from Rare soon is out of the question.

Well, I hope someone submitted an idea to let other devs take their IP so they don't just collect dust. Fuckers.

Well, their latest holiday card featured a horstachio, so maybe Viva Pinata is happening?

I just realized that Rare can no longer tease KI. I love that someone else did it better than they ever did.

I don't care who makes it, but a blast corps arcade game would be great.

MS needs to stop sitting on those ip's and do something with them. Feed em to different developers like they did with ki. Something, anything.

As for rare, let them create a new ip. Just make sure there's not one kinect in their entire studio. Give them a few months to get accustomed to handheld controllers, and take it from there. Baby steps.

Don't companies do their evaluating near the end of the current game they're working on? So they're all just chilling right now, thinking about stuff?

Dat Dream job.

not a fan of rare's dated IPs, but i'd kill for a new 3d platformer. even banjo, though again, i'd prefer a new take.

Banjo Threeie and Viva Piñata 3 please Rare!

Surprised they're still at the figuring out stages. I'd have thought they'd be nearing the end of another next gen project by now. Always assumed Rare was a big studio working on multiple games at the same time. Perhaps not?

Viva Piñata 3 please. Please!

But I will take pretty much anything from their stable of IPs. A new Banjo collectathon would be just peachy ;)

Only if they take it back to its original vulgar 'Bad Fur Day' N64 roots and not the sanitized 'Live and Reloaded' XB remake.

they put pants on Conker and beeped some words, probably for comedic effect. Not the end of the world.

it was still gorgeous and made some improvements to the first game.

That's exactly what I think... I mean does anyone really think this studio is going to make a Battletoads that will come close to capturing the feeling of the original? Does anyone really think they are going to make a monumental FPS ever again? Given the time it's been since they've dedicated themselves to those types of games, the loss of talent that developed those games and the current make up of the studio, I feel it would be a real gamble and could be a massive waste of time if they decide to make a game from the prior catalogue and it ends up missing the mark by a mile, and given the circumstance, I can see that as being a high probability.

I assume their first suggestion will be to build a time machine and go back to prevent their sale to MS. Cuz its that... or just going home.

Considering Viva Pinata and Nuts and Bolts were incredible, I trust the people working at Rare to do good work. Hell, you may not like motion controls but their Kinect games are still pretty damn good.

Nintendo sold them. Just remember that.

This image was the last time I had honest hope for Rare...

I miss their games.

Honestly, it'd be great if they got a chance to rebuild themselves and become one of the industry's top, most prominent developers once again.

Ever since the old guard started leaving and they became a Kinect Sports/avatar studio, I lost all interest in them. This latest development is somewhat promising, but I find it hard to muster much excitement after years of not giving a shit about them anymore.

It's Rare in name only now.

I understand what you're saying and granted, they're not the original Rare team and haven't been for a long while, but Nuts & Bolts showcased a lot of potential and was actually a pretty charming game for what it was. That alone gave me hope that they could do a proper platformer if they wanted, perhaps regardless of who comes and goes from the company. I'm also guessing that MS has enough money to hire whatever talent they need to build whatever game they want.
