[Old Interview] In 2012, EviLore turned down $5,000,000 to keep control of NeoGAF

I remember that interview.

With how much Gaf has grown since then and how much it's still growing, I imagine Evilore makes that much in a few years at this point. Maybe 5 years from now or so, he'll be making that much in a month. Good call turning down the offer. It's all about the long term.

I'm glad he did or this would have been IGN or at worse, shut down entirely.

It would have been a hard choice TBH.

So yeah, who was the buyer?

5 million huh. I wonder how much evilore makes then if he passed on that

Edit: evilore is cool because he watches HxH

I'm not surprised. If I was doing a job which happened to be my passion in life, I'd doubt any amount of money would make me walk away from it.

Dont know how much revenue he gets a year from the site, but to me keeping the site seems a better option than taking a quick $5mill

I'm sure owning the site with such traffic makes him enough money to live quite comfortably. Why sell something when it makes you enough and you get to keep it?

Definitely agree with you. If I could continue getting portions of that $5M by keeping the site running myself, hell, I would. Maybe down the road if he ever tires from it, but for now he seems to enjoy it.

To be honest, I'm surprised GAF has progressively surged in popularity in new accounts and unique visitors, given the change in internet communication with the advent of Facebook and Twitter. Many people seemingly switched from using instant messaging software, forums, and IRC, to primarily Facebook and Twitter.

Evilore would look 10x cooler if he had full sleeve tattoos

Should have sold, started a new website/forum and the day before the official takeover post a sticky with the new url and we all just join him on the new site.

Based on the estimated page views from OP, and using an ad revenue calculation I found through Google (though I can't verify the accuracy of it) of $1.20 per 1,000 page views, EviLore would be pulling in $84,000 of ad revenue per month. Obviously you have to take out operating costs to determine the profit from that, and I have no idea what the operating costs would be.

Regardless, just based on gross revenue alone, it would take EviLore nearly 6 years to earn $5 million.

well shit. Selling for 5m would be insane then.

$5 million is really low considering how much traffic this site gets. It'd be very easy to monetize it more (at the expense of the users) without losing too much of its viewerbase.

I wouldn't sell out either. If you're living comfortably (and I imagine EL is) then there's really no need for that extra money.

Besides, you'd regret it for the rest of your life.

What? Everyone would bail in a second to New Neo Gaming Age Forums Neo Edition. Pretty sure EvilLore gets that.

That'd be ingenious, but I'd suspect that there would be some sort of "no compete" clause in effect if a deal was struck.

Glad to see that people still have backbones and can resist the temptation of selling out on their passion.

Thanks EviLore.

Yep, this would have worked best. New keyholders still get all the hits from plebs looking up NeoGAF because they heard about it through the grapevine, the old guard takes to the starship ZetaGAF and escapes the fallout of the new ownership. Repeat as necessary, none the worse for wear.

man, some people are stuck in the 90s.

5 mil isn't shit these days, you can't live comfortably on that and he's already said he loves his job so why sell it? So he can buy coke and hookers for 3 months?

like that saying goes. find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life

For 5 million dollars it would have no only had a no compete clause, but probably a clause that said "you can't say you sold out the site" clause too. And like 100 more precautions.
