RAD (The Order) talks about putting story "at the top of the pyramid" above gameplay

Game director (Dana Jan): We don't even employ a game designer. We haven't had use for one since 2006 when we shipped Daxter.

Putting story above gameplay? Really RAD?

I can't remember the last time I've played a bad game because of a great story, but I play good games with bad stories all the time.

I can't remember the last time i played a story driven game with a bad story. No matter how good the gameplay is in a story driven game, i will not continue to play it if it has a bad story. Once again, people are failing to read and understand. This concept is not meant to be applied to all games but to games that are story driven. In a fighting game, we don't expect story to take precedence over the gameplay. In this context, this statement is perfectly acceptable.

The base of the pyramid is more important than the top.

Somw of you guys are fundamentally misunderstanding the quote.

.

I think story is always going to be at the top because it's what we start with. It's at the top of the pyramid and everything else supports that. I think it'd be more challenging to make a game for the gameplay's sake, then try to make a story that fits in there.

Whats the problem? He is saying the gameplay will be there as it is given. But they also want to tell a good story. I don't understand why there can't be a good story to tell with gameplay intact. I want my game to have substance instead of just shooting millions of enemies. As usual hyperbole gaf is hyperbole.

Hey guys, I'm a cook. Honestly, it doesn't matter if my dishes taste bad, as long they look impressive in the plate, and there's a lots of it.

Wat.

These guys need better speakers they are doing themselves a disservice. Their handlers where are they? I mean public speaking was not a skill they were forced to get right?

Calm down guys. This approach worked well for The Walking Dead games. Maybe RAD is on to something. If we could have a Telltale-esque game here, it could be something special!

This just tells me they want to innovate in story and graphics and repeat what is already out there for gameplay. RAD has a good history with their GoW games, so I'm not really terribly concerned.

Story was at the top of the pyramid of The Last of Us. Story and the universe drove every gameplay decision. And that turned out just fine.

A good approach if the story is worthwhile. Sadly, it rarely is, but they should at least be given the benefit of the doubt until we've played the game.

no.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I guess I should have saw that coming with black bars covering 1/5th the screen. I miss 90's gaming.

Pretty sure the implication here is that RaD is confident about the gameplay in their games so their focus with this game is to beef up the story more.

But yeah, holy shit he's David Cage clone!!!1

I had high hopes for this considering how great and gameplay-focused every other RAD game has been, but I'm starting to worry.

We're getting Fuse with a steampunk skin instead. Well, I'm not getting it if you know what I'm sayin'.

Am I the only one who doesn't mind the gameplay quote? I feel like most people are interpreting it to mean that they don't care about the gameplay and are going to be lazy with it, but I don't think thats what they meant at all. Really, I think they meant the opposite: that they know what they're doing and they know it'll be solid, in unspectacular.

It has been obvious that this is standard practice among the large studios for a long time, but to read it being put so bluntly is such a downer.

Videogames started all those decades ago with a gameplay concept first and story (if there was one at all) secondary.

These types of games will always be my one true love. Games with brilliant gameplay and terrible stories can still be epic (Ninja Gaiden, any Mario game), but games with terrible gameplay and brilliant stories (Advent Rising, Too Human) are usually a mess.

Can't agree with RaD's priorities on this one.

Lol holy shit at people losing their minds over this. We've barely seen anything of the game, or story for that matter. Let's see more of what they have up their sleeve before we jump ship.

Gameplay is something that... it's a game, we make games, we can't get around it.

oh boy, lol.

Seems like this industry is starting to get "flooded" with people that dont even care about making actual games.

Meh.

I remember the first time I bought a videogame magazine, it was a PSM issue in which there was an interview with Andrea Pessino and two other RAD founders, they talked about Daxter and, when asked about "what's really important in a videogame?", they replied "it has to be fun!".

I guess they did the famous "quality leap" PSbros always talk about.

You know that realisticaly they should be making games that other people want to play right? The whole point of this game making business is making money.

Wrap it all up, RAD. People in this thread aren't interested. Therefore your game won't sell.

It never ever will for me. I have to play a game for hours. No matter what quality level the story is I can not play something I am not enjoying. If I want a good story I read a book or watch a film.

See, I never understood that line of thinking. It's not like they are aiming to make the gameplay horrible or anything. But it's a TPS, what do people actually expect? It's already one of the most boring genres unless you like simple boom bang boom. A good story could take a mediocre and slightly boring game (by design) and make it into a great one, so why the fuck not. Just because people here flip out over small interview snippets without actually thinking about it for one second does not mean that their approach isn't viable.

Every worry i've had about this 'game' is going to come true, isn't it? I said in the reveal thread that i was worried it was going to be this generations Dragons Lair.

That quote reads like something David Cage would say. If you feel like you have to 'get around' the gameplay, don't make a game.

If someone just posted that quote, I'd figure it'd be something David Cage would say. This kind of comment changes how I'll view the game going forward. Knowing that the most important thing about a video game, the gameplay, is being heavily sidelined is not an encouraging sign.

And not just on the development side, there are lots of suits pumping money into games and introducing exploitative practices quality be damned.

One thing I'm confused about is that Ready at Dawn seems to have no experience with story-focused video games so it seems weird to make a game so focused on the narrative when they may not have talented enough writers to make the narrative interesting.

This game is not going to be for me. Sucks I really want Sony to get a gears type going and I know this isn't it but damn.

Gotcha. So I'm sure giving people only what they want is a flawless business plan. I mean, endless CoD/Halo/Minecraft clones should suffice? Because according to the market, this is is all people want to play, the only games making the most money. Let's give 'em more!

At this point, the technology and art side of the western game development community is pretty much a housing accommodation for people who couldn't make it into Hollywood.

LOL. This is why the game is being accused of being generic, it´s built on a design checklist for this kind of game.

One kind of game we expected to evolve because if i´m going to play a game like this i need to wait only for the best of the genre, Uncharted.

Not surprised at all, this confirms everything i think about the game, solid rental for sure.
