RTTP: Persona 3 Portable

I know this may seem like a random thread but I have noticed that I've talked about this game a lot here on Gaf XD. I figure I explain in detail why I love this game so much :D, as due to you guys doing that for Persona 4 Golden so many times, I would have never played that and this (thanks again for hyping P4G up so much; favorite Vita game I own :D).

With Persona 3 though, I remember hearing about this a long time ago. I used to watch that G4 review show X-Play and saw the review of the PS2 version of the game. It looked really interesting to me; "Wow the game looks amazing!", "Wait....why are they shooting themselves for?", "Man, those cool beings they summon are interesting :D!".

But...I never bothered picking that up for some reason :(. Now, fast forward to this year and coming right off from loving P4G, they have a sale on the Persona games on PSP, and they have this for only five bucks. Figuring how this was the closest to Persona 4 compared to the other games in the series I picked it up.....man was it a great move :D!

I started the FM Main Character playthough and all the things I really enjoyed from Persona 4 Golden are here; the interesting social links, the ease of transport from place to place, the characters all being so interesting, the music....man is it amazing :D, the combat being lifted from Persona 4 making it feel second nature and the bosses being quite challenging.... The game filled my desire to play something like Persona 4 again :D.

The thing that surprised me the most was how I ended up like a good deal of it MORE then Persona 4. The characters here I really felt bad for :(. Throughout the game, the consistent tone of 'Death' and 'Loss' really drives home through EVERY member of SEES (the team you are fighting with), as they all lose things important to them. I'm not going to spoil things, but you really feel bad for Aigis at the end X(.

The story itself though felt much larger then Persona 4 to me as well. Unlike in Persona 4 where you are just solving a mystery that is taking peoples lives leading to saving your town, here....you are preventing the END ITSELF! Not to mention the Shadow designs are much more menacing here then in Persona 4 and the twists you encounter are very surprising.

I have to get back to the characters though, as they are just really great characters :D. While you really don't get 'that' close with them as you did with your friends in Persona 4 (considering how it had an impact on the story itself), the portable version address that with the Female Main Character, due to being able to have S. Links (the mechanic that allows you to gain level-bonus during Persona fusions) with all the members of SEES. The new S. Links were all really enjoyable to see and the old ones get some new twists with the FM Main Character.

The only issues this game had was how Tartarus was handled :(. Rather then the many different dungeons from Persona 4, you just go through one big one. That isn't that bad, but it feels....just kinda there? Sure it has some significance in the story (though largely toward the end), but for much of the game it is just the 'training ground' for you and your party members.

I have issue with this I suppose due to coming from Persona 4 Golden when I played this. The dungeons there had there own theme, story significance and clear link to the party member you had to save....but the core of the dungeons in P4G are the same as P3P (randomly generated floors, very similar set of shadows to fight, the floors not having the much interesting stuff to interact with, ect). Granted, those issues are in P4G as well, but you can mask them due to the story still taking center stage. With P3P....that isn't the case, so the samey-ness of the different floors are very easy to see.

But outside of that issue, I love this game :D. But I have to post some music from the game here....because it is just simply amazing XD! I don't know how they did it, but the Persona team just nailed the soundtrack in this game mixing so many different styles but them melding together so perfectly. Mass Destruction, Battle for Everyone's Souls, Burn My Dread, Wiping All Out....just amazing.

Lastly, there are other versions of this game too; the original PS2 version and its 'remaster' FES. They are great versions of this amazing game and while both suffer from issues that were ironed out here (via using P4 mechanics) like the 'Tire' system and AI control party members (though you can influence some control over them via Tactics menu), they aren't enough to ruin the fun :D. I say give those a shot first if you can deal with those problems; the Portable version of Persona 3 was a bit cut down so some of the presentation was lessened, so the PS2 version will have better visuals, 3D world to explore and animated cut-scenes.

The FES version also comes with brand new content (some new S. Links, Persona's from past Persona games, new items/armor, and the 'Answer' content that explains the ending to the game).

Persona 3's one of my favorite games of all time. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

A lot of the improvements in P3P are great additions that really help, but I still feel that the definitive version of the game is FES on the PS2.

Almost every story cutscene has its impact lessened by trying to tell it through dialog and character portraits alone.

I really wish Atlus would take a fourth swing at the game and really put all of the best aspects of each version of the game into one package.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the game, I have played and completed the three version of Persona 3 and Portable is definitely my favorite one even if some people hate it to death because they made it more of a VN(which I actually enjoyed a lot).

Persona 3 Portable gives you control of your party which really made the experience much better for me, I was not a fan of giving "orders" even if it usually is enough.

Also, FeMC for life.

I also got the FES version of Persona 3 thanks to a recent PSN sale (can't beat the price of 4 bucks :D) and while I find the issues REALLY annoying (mostly the tire system :()....the game just looks amazing. Hell, I would argue the visuals in P3 are a bit better then P4G's :D (the high usage of Shadows and more bloom I thinks does that).

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
This thread has made me realized I've never even glimpsed at a Persona game on a console. Then again, my Persona history started in October. And yeah, P3P is pretty badass, if only for FeMC (Misato Arisato). She's so damn bubbly and infectious that I've wiped the My Chemical Romance (Thanks X-Play) fan MC out of my mind. And she really makes the whole story pop by actually becoming friends with the rest of the SEES crew. Yet, having never played FES, I can't ever compare it, and I never will. Maybe I'll watch the cutscenes one day.

you speak so well
I actually just finished up Persona 3 for the first time last night and absolutely loved it. I like the SMT series a lot (Nocturne is one of my favorite RPGs ever) but I've never touched a Persona game. I bought FES on PS3 a few months ago and started very slowly picking away at it, until it clicked a few weeks ago and I was obsessed. Just a fantastic game overall - good gameplay (even with the AI party members), really interesting story and a great, fun cast of characters. I started up The Answer today and I don't really know how I feel about it - no social links/school life is a huge bummer since they were part of the reason why I loved the main part of the game and Aigis was probably one of my least favorite characters so a story focused on her isn't the most interesting to me. Eh. I also have 4 on PSN, ready to go but I should probably finish The Answer first.

P3 FES is best P3.

I can't get into the world of the game without seeing the locations in 3D spaces.

I'm playing FES right now and this game has serious pacing problems and when you are not involved in the story dungeons, there is not that much interesting content, even the S.links are not that interesting, I hope it gets better, right now I'm in the middle of august.

I played P4 and P4G before P3, maybe and I'm playing with the wrong mindset, I don't know, I want to love it but is not happening for me yet.

That is something I forgot to mention in the OP; the pacing really is a bit off. That was the case for Persona 4 too (as there was ALOT of new content in the Golden version of the game, making things feel much more alive), but I'm sure they fixed this in the portable version (I remember if you are playing the FM Main character there is an event that happens if you sign up for one of the sports) for that specific month.

Also in that month, you get consistently invited to the movies (which create little scenes + give you free social stat boosts) and go to that summer school (which while boring also gives you a HUGE boost to your Intelligence stat).

I guess pacing is an issue in P3 due to the fact the developers figured that the player will make the pacing themselves via social links. In a way, that does work (as P3 has a lot of them to start) but Persona 4 did handle that better (the events in the original P4 as well as the many added ones in Golden).

I love the game. I went P4G->P3FES->P3P Minako and I don't know where I'd rank it, but it's an amazing game. It has a different feel to it than P4G while also being similar in its great aspects. That dying young man social link made me teary eyed. Tough themes touched in this game and I feel FeMC has the much better social links.

I'm replaying it myself as the FeMC now. Already played through it a few years ago as the MC and it's indeed awesome. I still like Persona 4/P4G better though, but it's a close second. Never played FES since I don't think I'd be able to play without having control of my whole party after first playing P4. The streamlined VN look didn't really bother me.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
P3P was probably the best way to bring a game of that scope on PSP.

Sure it sacrificed pretty much all the non-dungeon exploration, but the snappy interface and menu-like selecting of things made everything real quick, fast and enjoyable.

The only part that I really miss in P3P was The Answer, some people hate it a lot (And I can see why) but I think It was worth it because
It's the real ending.

So I'm on my first playthrough of P3P. I finished P4G recently and loved it. I'm currently about 8 hrs into P3P, am level 16 and am on floor 31 of the Tartarus. I'm curious when the story is going to pick up? The first 8hrs of P4G felt like 90% story and so far P3P feels like the inverse.

When does the story pick up? Does it?

It does, but you wont like the answer.

July :(

It's worth it though. Once it gets going it doesn't stop until the end of the game, but until summer it's a few months of the main plot's wheels spinning in place. Easily the biggest flaw in my opinion.

It's been almost 2 years since I finished P3P, but I'm playing through FES at the moment. I would say the story begins to pick up after the second set of exams (July).

I can see why people would prefer P3P over FES, as the AI can be stupid sometimes, but the visuals and the 3D locations in FES do make a difference. I think I like FES more than P3P.

Ah thanks! I can tough that out. Such a weird choice to delay the story picking up for that long though.

I fully enjoyed P4. I really want to jump into P3, but I HATE the fact I have to choose between two versions that I want different parts from. I want the graphics and 3D cutscenes from FES, but I want to play the female MC and have full control of my party from P3P.

This is the sole reason I haven't picked this up yet. I just keep hoping there is another remaster of this game that combines everything from the previous versions.

That'll never happen. Just get P3P and watch the cutscenes on youtube.

This is my opinion as well. I can understand it, but FES is just a much better presented package.

I couldn't agree more, RK128. P3P was my first entry into the Persona world. I had seen bits of P4G coming to Vita months in advance, and heard about some links between 3 & 4. Since I was set on playing through P4G, I decided I *must* play through 3 before 4. After much research, I opted for P3P because of the streamlined approach to the game to non battle exploration, figured it'd help me blast through the game faster.

140 hours later after my first playthrough wrapped up, I was applauding everything I had experienced. 140. I've never spent that much time on my first playthrogh of any RPG, and to me it all seemed like a normal length game. I couldn't believe how much time I racked up on it. Once it beat it, I was unwrapping my P4G Solid Gold Edition as the end credits played, slapping that game card in the slot right before it finished up. I immediately started up P4G, and despite being blown away by the 3d world and all, I couldn't shake that P3P feeling. For the first third of Golden all I heard was the music from 3...I mean in the last third of 3
that main overworld music change felt so heavy to me...I can't say anything in Golden had that much of an impact from a static image, and music
.

I am probably the only person too who loved Tartarus. The idea of the demon tower sprawling up into the skies, with living floros that change patterns, and the relentlessness of Death chasing you, it felt great. I wanted to know so much more. Can't remember the name, but I want to go to
the reverse Tartarus.
. Granted, I literally skipped the last month by doing NOTHING except going to sleep as soon as I could to progress the story so I could start Golden, everything was still heavy. I now know what I potentially missed. I also have not played or seen The Answer, which I am still kicking myself over. I don't want to do that now though, due to it being so long since I Persona'd. My future plans are to FeMC P3P finally, Answer it up, then go to P4A to see all that awesomeness there.

But yea, P3P will be forever etched into my memory.
