How about we don't have an official academia of gaming and i couldn't give an arse about what the GiantBomb website says. If at the least you presented me the thoughts about this issue of an important game designer of the the games we are disscussing, at the least that would be more interesting.
Sorry, i can't bring myself to care about how words evolve. All i know is that it's better to educate people about the miss use of the term, instead of perpetuate an error. At the least it gives some perspective.

Etymology
Blend of Metroid and Castlevania, two influential games of this type.
Proper noun
Metroidvania
- (video games, informal) A style of platform game with role-playing game elements and inventory items, involving more exploration than a traditional linear platform game.
[quotations ▲]
- 2008, Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition
The Castlevania games share similarities with the Metroid series, in particular the free-roaming design in which new abilities allow access to different areas. Because of this, fans often refer to such games as "Metroidvania" in style.
- 2009 September 1, Whitworth, Chris, Batman Arkham Asylum 24.99, uk.games.video.misc, Usenet:
It's got Metroidvania elements - it's structured like one, I guess, in that it's lots of exploration with a fair bit of backtracking and getting new abilities that unlock previously unopened areas and that sort of thing.
- 2009 September 14, Falcon, Jonah, Shadow Complex Great Game, alt.games.video.xbox, Usenet:
Pure Metroidvania... with 3D in-engine cutscenes.
Don't say a Metroid or Castlevania title.
This is what makes it hard because they don't come close to either of them. Struggling to find one from indies.
Is it weird?@OP:
We need to clear something up. If you say Metroidvania, then you can pick only Castlevania games that follow the Metroid formula. The term was created to nominate those in the Castlevania series. These type of games started with Metroid, not with Castlevania.
For some weird reason people miss use the term.
On topic: That would be Symphony of the Night in my case.

GiantBomb XD
Anyway, the discussion is over from my side. Carry on, Castlevania invented these type of gameplay, is not like the formula was already perfected by Metroid years earlier.
I really enjoyed Dust: An Elysium Tail. It's eye candy as a game, the combat, story, and progression are all fluid, the music is top notch, and I find the characters charming.
Would Mischief Makers count as a Metroidvania? If so, that too.
Would Mischief Makers count as a Metroidvania? If so, that too.
BTW why I can't say a Metroid or Castlevania game if the title ask for one?
Metroid Prime counts, but it's also a Metroid game.Does Metroid Prime count?
Dust's art style just looks like vomit, in my opinion.
It plays fine, but no game should ever look like the Recently Submitted section of Deviantart.
This really needs a damn sequel already. Game was so good!Shadow Complex
I respect that opinion. I'm sure you're personally able to produce better artwork than the aforementioned "recently submitted" area of Deviantart.
So don't ask a Metrovania game... Castlevania with 2D Metroid style.a. I didn't ask what your favorite Metroid or Castlevania game is. Metroidvania is a genre.
b. I didn't want to read 50 responses of Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid.
So don't ask a Metrovania game... Castlevania with 2D Metroid style lol
It is not a genre lol
Yes, I could.
It is not a genre lol
But fine.
Although I love Cave Story, I fail to see how it qualifies as a Metroidvania. It's not a big, connected world, it's a hub world with a teleporter to defined levels. Plus it's completely linear.
My vote would have to be Dark Souls.
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Shadow Complex was SO much fun to play. It was the first game I bought off XBLA.
To those saying Dark Souls, can that really be classified as "metroidvania"? I was always under the assumption that metroidvania involved an open 2D world only.
