What's your favorite Metroidvania?

Outside of the Metroids and Castlevanias...
Shadow Complex
Followed by...
Guacamelee!

So much win here ! My choices as well.

I would love a Shadow Complex 2 :(

How about we don't have an official academia of gaming and i couldn't give an arse about what the GiantBomb website says. If at the least you presented me the thoughts about this issue of an important game designer of the the games we are disscussing, at the least that would be more interesting.

GiantBomb XD

Anyway, the discussion is over from my side. Carry on, Castlevania invented these type of gameplay, is not like the formula was already perfected by Metroid years earlier.

Cave Story. I don't really like it that much; it is just the only game of this genre I have ever played. I have played neither Metroid or Castlevania, in fact, as without any nostalgia I am not sure they would hold my interest.

Sorry, i can't bring myself to care about how words evolve. All i know is that it's better to educate people about the miss use of the term, instead of perpetuate an error. At the least it gives some perspective.

Here's some education: "misuse" is one word. "Miss Use" is a lady whose last name is Use.

Your opinion doesn't make it the definition. Especially when you aren't providing anything outside of said opinion.

Etymology

Blend of Metroid and Castlevania, two influential games of this type.

Proper noun

Metroidvania

  1. (video games, informal) A style of platform game with role-playing game elements and inventory items, involving more exploration than a traditional linear platform game.

    • 2008, Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition
The Castlevania games share similarities with the Metroid series, in particular the free-roaming design in which new abilities allow access to different areas. Because of this, fans often refer to such games as "Metroidvania" in style.
    • 2009 September 1, Whitworth, Chris, “Batman Arkham Asylum 24.99”, uk.games.video.misc, Usenet:
It's got Metroidvania elements - it's structured like one, I guess, in that it's lots of exploration with a fair bit of backtracking and getting new abilities that unlock previously unopened areas and that sort of thing.
    • 2009 September 14, Falcon, Jonah, “Shadow Complex Great Game”, alt.games.video.xbox, Usenet:
Pure Metroidvania... with 3D in-engine cutscenes.

I've gotta say, despite enjoying the game I thought Guacamelee's actual Metroidvania elements were pretty average.
Almost entirely self contained areas with little interlinking within the map, standard and uninteresting collectables alongside money running out of use about halfway through the game.
Perhaps most importantly for me the world itself just isn't that interesting to explore with little to discover, the progression felt heavily guided throughout.

Fun brawling and platforming elements though, I really think a linear stage progression could have fit the games style a lot better but that's just me.

@OP:

We need to clear something up. If you say Metroidvania, then you can pick only Castlevania games that follow the Metroid formula. The term was created to nominate those in the Castlevania series. These type of games started with Metroid, not with Castlevania.

For some weird reason people miss use the term.

On topic: That would be Symphony of the Night in my case.
Is it weird?

So if you're not right, then no one is? Lol.

I really enjoyed Dust: An Elysium Tail. It's eye candy as a game, the combat, story, and progression are all fluid, the music is top notch, and I find the characters charming.

Would Mischief Makers count as a Metroidvania? If so, that too.

Dust's art style just looks like vomit, in my opinion.
It plays fine, but no game should ever look like the Recently Submitted section of Deviantart.

Shadow Complex is probably my favorite, followed by Arkham Asylum.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions for the DS are also pretty good and haven't been mentioned yet. Also Wario Land 3.

BTW why I can't say a Metroid or Castlevania game if the title ask for one?

a. I didn't ask what your favorite Metroid or Castlevania game is. Metroidvania is a genre.
b. I didn't want to read 50 responses of Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid.

La Mulana is incredible with how it forces you to be a detective. The main issues are some shoddy level design that relies too much on the holy grail teleportation and the awkward movement, but the level design is top-notch at being interesting to navigate at least.

Does Metroid Prime count?
Metroid Prime counts, but it's also a Metroid game.

I respect that opinion. I'm sure you're personally able to produce better artwork than the aforementioned "recently submitted" area of Deviantart.

Some games that might be overlooked are Knytt Underground and Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Highly recommend checking them out.

Oh! And I supposed Tomba would count. Such an amazing game.

So don't ask a Metrovania game... Castlevania with 2D Metroid style.

It is not a genre lol

But fine.

Yes, I could.

Color me interested. Do you have any samples of your work?

Back on topic: I think Mischief Makers you can replay certain areas/bosses to get a better score and collect all gems and stuff, so I don't think it's connected as a worldly whole.

Also, I agree with Muramasa. It's a fantastic game. Odin Sphere might also fit somewhere under the Metroidvania umbrella since it borrows a lot of elements from that genre.

Why can't Metroidvania be a genre? "Roguelike" is also another term used to describe games that share common features or game play elements. I did a little digging and I think the term we may be looking for is "sub-genre."

Although I love Cave Story, I fail to see how it qualifies as a Metroidvania. It's not a big, connected world, it's a hub world with a teleporter to defined levels. Plus it's completely linear.

My vote would have to be Dark Souls.

If only IGAvanias are allowed to be called Metroidvanias, then what genre do Shadow Complex, Guacamelee, Strider (2014) etc. belong to?

Talk about being pedantic.

It's on the list.

Most people consider it one, so why not.

Shadow Complex was SO much fun to play. It was the first game I bought off XBLA.

To those saying Dark Souls, can that really be classified as "metroidvania"? I was always under the assumption that metroidvania involved an open 2D world only.

The issue is Metroid Prime. If we can't count DS because 3D, then we can't count Prime.

Yeah, I can't consider Cave Story as a Metroidvania, the game for the most part was linear. Good game though.

Anyway, my vote goes to either Order of Ecclesia or Metroid Zero Mission. One had a challenge that the other Igavanias lacked and the other is my favorite Metroid game of all time
Never played super

I think I want to say Zelda 2 (if that counts) or vvvvvv. Wonderboy 3: The Dragons Trap is also really great.

Edit: Well counting the two obvious franchises, I will have to go with Super Metroid, Order of Eclessia and Symphony if the Night.
