People forget the old days of Kung Fu movies where everyone was the same actor in different roles. Shaw Brothers used to do it all the time.

Shaw brothers wouldn't really do it in movies that are direct sequels to each other. Movies that already contain numerous actors playing the same role in the previous movie.

I didn't like it. I am very surprised st myself as I like action like this.
What were bad for me:
- length. Way too long and needed to cut at least 20-30 minutes
- fights dragged on a lot. Just stay down after serious hits dammit. Million guys after another Especially
the kitchen fight
was too long
- the fights had this strange feeling of kick stop kick stop hit swing stop. Can't explain properly but it broke the realism I was hoping for. Half of the time it felt like a coreography acting. I am not supposed to feel that way.
- the plot was a bit too big as a fight vessel and cliches a plenty

I liked:
- the hammer girl as a character idea.
- the impacts were in many places well done
- the use of props to flow with the combat was good
- car chase had some nice parts

I don't really know what happened. Just felt a bit bored watching this. Now I love The man from nowhere, Raid 1 was ok, Taken has similar brutality. It's so difficult to explain what I didn't like. Maybe it overstayed its welcome in many places so I felt no excitement for the character(s)

I loved it all even the bum talking to his ex. It was cute. I wasn't really super anxious for the next fight. I felt the movie was pretty perfect. I didn't mind any of the talking. It was nice build up.

Yeah, I don't really get the complaints that it's slow/boring/too long. I enjoyed all of it, though the Prakoso non-fighting stuff a bit less. He seems to not be connected to the overall story. The scenes are enjoyable, however.

Nahh no nope nada.

Negatory.

Of course it's subjective. I felt they just went on and on after some serious hits. It's a movie but yeah. Won't really argue about it as that's really pointless. Some think episode I-III are good too (well that was a low blow. In no way is this movie comparable haha).

Watched it last night and thought it was good.

Sucks that I had to go read an interview with Evans to get backstory on HammerGirl/BatBoy :| Those details would have worked well in the film I think.

Also, I didn't get the Mad Dog thing.
He died in the first so why was he here? If he was supposed to be a different character then why recast the same actor? He was my favorite character in the first but what's dead should stay dead. Was more wtf than actually exciting to see him.

Yea same actor different role but it was handled pretty poorly. When he showed up on screen everyone starting talking amongst themselves with a lot "wait isn't that..." like convo. Bad execution for a sequel.

I love the Man from nowhere as well, but those are 2 different movies.
One is realism (kidnapping/organ harvesting) while the other is more comic bookish (Hammer girl, Batboy) so the action is going to fit the style of the movie.

How many times did you watch the Raid? It was never meant to be realistic despite the brutality of it all.

Nothing in Raid 2 was different from the action in Raid 1 other than it being more ambitious.

I can understand if it's not your thing, but Raid 1's action was just as choreographed, stop and go action as the 2nd.

Also martial arts movies are supposed to have long fights.

Okay, just watched Raid 1+2 back-to-back on Blu today.

I still think I prefer the 1st. It's just ultra-tight pacing carried on with constant awesome action scenes.

I remember being somewhat disappointed with Raid 2 after seeing it in theaters. Felt it was too long, with too many non-action parts. I just had different expectations of the movie since Raid 1 is probably my favorite action film ever. I guess I just wanted more of it with the same pacing. Raid 2 tries to do more than that, and I appreciate that more now. The build-up works better for me this time around. Cutting off 30-60 min from the movie would have upped the pacing, but the fights would just be out of context.

The choreography is just as good as I remember. What I also have a greater appreciation of as well this time around is the stellar camerawork. I can't believe I thought it was 'too shaky' when watching it in theaters. It's just very dynamic, and never obfuscates the action. There's a few longer takes which are just awesome. I think being able to rewind and rewatch segments gave me a better appreciation here.

That kitchen fight is godtier. I mean, I loved it in theaters already, but rewatching and replaying parts of it to soak in all the amazing choreography just brings it to a whole new level. It's great that it IS long, because the fight builds up over that time.

Even better on a 2nd viewing. I still love the the scope and range that the story covers. You could have done 11/12 action scenes like this and call it a sequel, but the aspirations were higher. It's a fully realized story that throws in a diversion that opens the door for an interesting capper to what will be a trilogy. Seeing it again you get hints that more is going on in the glances that people throw at each other. The hints are there that things aren't as straightforward and linear. I raved about it after I saw it in the theater and feel that it's just as compelling in a home viewing. The attempted rise and fall of Uco came across better to me. You're not a "boss," my friend. All he had to do was to have some patience. But no, he was petulant and overreached and lost everything. Even 'Koso's story is a more convincing vignette in this home viewing. The poor bastard does bad deeds, it absolutely loyal and get's screwed over in Uco's powerplay. I felt even worse for him this time around.

My grin stays wide and proud after watching this.

Just wanted to mention I bought the bluray today and am sitting here watching it now. My girlfriend and I saw it in theaters and loved it. It's actually her favorite movie now.

Don't know if this is the 100% official back story to the two characters but I think it fits nicely.

While it's interesting, I think that there are enough hints at a deep brother/sister relationship between the two that I don't need more. Sometimes, less is more. I don't need to see their father abusing them any more than I need to see Willy Wonka's dentist father in that awful Tim Burton version.

I saw this movie yesterday and damn what a ride. It's like you watch crappy movie after crappy movie without even realizing it. Then you watch a gem of a film like this to remind yourself what a good movie is.

That said, I still prefer the The Raid: Redemption because it felt a lot more focused. But both are 10/10 in my book.

I rewatched it again. The story made more sense and I was able to follow it more closely. The names were hard to keep track of during the first viewing.

Just watched the film again with director commentary on. Some nice insights into its making! Worth a listen. Again, the camera work/choreography doesn't cease to amaze me.

Just watched it for the first time. Definitely a classic, and I'm going to have to show this to every single person I know and meet in the future haha.

Best martial arts fighting scenes I've ever seen. That long haired guy was fantastic to watch.

I've finally seen it. Amazing movie. Even better than the first one, especially the fights. It fixed everything I didn't like about Raid 1 and kept all I loved about it. Pure classic. I don't think any movie this year will top it for me.

I have finally watched it yesterday.. and I am honestly disappointed. It felt like an average asian action flick with lots of "hey lets construct a over the top stylish action scene" with even more boring filler scenes in between. The story is all over the place and the pacing is horrible. The first movie is leagues ahead of this. Dont get me started on the voice acting.

Great action flick. They somehow managed to top themselves with these fight scenes.

I still prefer the original for its simple setting and story though. The Raid 2's attempt at a grander plot didn't really do it any favors.

Your own damn fault watching live action with dub.

the rental Blu-ray actually defaults to the dub for fucks sake. couldn't believe it when I popped it in. and yes the dub sounded really bad (for all of the 3 seconds I listened to it before going back to the menu to start over). dubs are always suck anyways.

so yeah, decent movie. way way too long though. probably needed less fight scenes actually. the story portion was not bad, but it was a bit all over the place and vague (didn't see the first one though, so that could have been an issue). definitely some serious editing needed though. very bloated.

some damn fine action scenes, not a great film though. ill have to check out the first one some day.

JB in Australia is offering an exclusive and apparently limited edition double pack. The release of the first movie was only the cut theatrical version over here, so I'm not sure if the double pack version is uncut or not.
Must have meant The Night Comes For Us.
That's what I was thinking, too. Can't wait for that!

Where did you get this from? Gareth Evans has explicitly stated that he hasn't even put pen to paper on a script for The Raid 3, let alone cast anyone.

I thought the status was he hadn't begun a script, but already had other pre-production plans in place. and already had the general outline of the film.

God that fucking kitchen fight. Amazing even in budget version. Water blood is still making me crack up haha. I really hope they bring The Assassin in The Raid 3 like they brought back Mad Dog...in spirit.

Edit. Shit just thought about this, but don't watch that video unless you have seen the film. It spoils the entire choreography of the final scene, down to the exact same shots being identical.

Yep, very disappointing considering the hype behind it. Way too long; too many fight scenes crammed in; trying and failing giving a depth to the story (so another cliche story about a son feeling underestimated by his father) - i mean it's hard trying to gauge the acting in non-action parts because the language is so different i have no read on the intonation or delivery.

Fights vs fights, The Raid 2 might as well topped the first but it has too much fat and stuff that bring it down and stretch it. In theory the downtime was supposed to allow the viewer to catch his breath but it made me restless for when the action picks up again\ tired and fatigued when the next fight comes and they still managed to put more fight scenes than i was able to digest.

Yep. Just watched it the other night and I agree. The increased emphasis on story did this movie no favors. I much prefer the first although the car case is spectacular.

one question about the beginning/story
if this movie take splace 2 hours or so after the raid 1, how come when you see rama explain to his wife that he has to go undercover their child is born and looks much older than a new born baby?
