NPD Sales Results for June 2014 [Up3: All Hardware (June/LTD), Top 10 Software SKUs]

You can't just assign this to XB360 and PS3 because the PS3 still had a strong footing in Europe while beeing behind in NA.

XB1 has no chance in Europe at all. So even if XB1 is close to PS4 in NA with decent sales, the global sales gap will widen more and more.

Well this is a US sales thread, so PS3=XB1 analagy is perfectly fine.

When Nintendo launches Wii 3, they are fools if they don't launch with Mario and follow up with Mario Kart for the next christmas.

Highly doubt anyone is saying a "comeback". The gap is too big for the Xbox One to get the #1 spot in US anytime soon. I do think it's possible for the system to do better than the PS4 in November/December in the US in part due to MCC (especially if it gets a bundle) but not saying it's guaranteed.

It's not just the remake that's causing me (and others) to say this... It's the fact that the remake is coming out at a time in which consoles sales greatly increase.

It won't. Just like it didn't for Titanfall. Just like it didn't for this month.

Collectors editions, no matter how great...do not carry that much power. Don't get me wrong! I will love the Last of Us Remastered, Master Chief Collection, and the hinted Uncharted Collection as much as the next guy, but they wouldn't convince me to buy a system alone. That being said, the only remaster that might have power is GTA5, and we know how that's going to go with exclusive content on PS4.

As usual, it will be crazy when Destiny/uncharted are out

The question is what will the general consumer think? Will he think "oh just another hd collection" or "this thing is reworked and rebuilt and totally awesome"?

I guess that's a job for marketing.

True. MS has a decent track record as far as marketing their big games. I imagine they will go all out, unlike typical compilations where they just appear on a shelf one day.

NPD Sales gap between PS3 and 360 was much bigger but it's a good comparison regardless. Change from last gen, console more known for exclusives in the hardcore gaming space, media focus early on, etc.

..but cry so much I wish I had some
I always thought that some people would take their time to jump to next gen as most of the big games are still being released on previous gen consoles, and it can kind of be seen here with some of the games selling better on 360 than on the bone. A lot of the casual population doesn't care as much about the graphics, and I'd see a lot of people not jumping on next gen if they can still play the big upcoming games on previous gen and save all that money since they don't have to buy the new consoles.

I'm not saying that is the sole reason, but maybe that could be one of the reasons why a lot of people haven't made the switch from 360 to Xbone (or to PS4 I guess). A lot of people could be stretching it as much as they can as when they'll have no choice to make the switch, they'll get the console for a much cheaper price.

I mean, the next COD, Battlefield, and Destiny are all coming to previous gen consoles this year and so did Watchdog and even some first party titles from Sony and MS are coming to previous gen consoles. Why would anyone jump in and spend 400$ when they can have the same experience on the consoles they already own, albeit at a lower resolution, but still perfectly playable.

Pretty much, from what I recall. We always joked about the next thing that's gonna save the PS3: Home, LBP and so on and so forth. Think of it like the blackboard items to save the Wii U.

Oh I know that. I was questioning the use of the word demonized. I feel like I could have bolded that better.

It won't. Just like it didn't for Titanfall. Just like it didn't for this month.

Disagree in terms or making a conclusion now. Think it's faulty to use months that aren't part of the Holiday shopping season to make direct predictions for November/December -- at least in terms of the Xbox One. Would be different if the system was doing as bad as say the Wii U in the US during its first year. Still think there's a chance the system could do better in US than the PS4 in Nov. and/or Dec. but as I said many times before it isn't guaranteed.

The Halo Collection has already made people get an Xbox One and probably will even more when the game is about to be released... Especially if it gets its own special SKU. We'll see what happens.

Wow the PS4 continues to impress. I do wonder how big the gap was between ps4 and xbone tho. Either way, what a great start for Sony this gen.

Halo TV studio is dead... it won't happen anymore.

Studio will wind down, Halo TV series will continue development

http://recode.net/2014/07/17/microsoft-to-shut-down-xbox-entertainment-studios/

Update 10:47 am PT: Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Studios, issued a statement, confirming that the studio will close in the coming months. He said executives Tellem, Jordan Levin and other members of the team will remain to work on original programs that are already in production, such as the upcoming documentary series “Signal to Noise” whose first installment takes on the rise and fall of gaming icon Atari, and “Halo: Nightfall.” The “Halo” television series will continue as planned.

This is the first like non launch window month for the Wii u where I think you can say the sales are actually good and not have to caveat it in some way. If it holds for next month--obviously a big if--it could easily best xbone.

It's impressive to me how quickly and decisively Sony turned things around. I mean, sure, for the global mass market the ps4 is a far more appealing product, but even in the US where they weren't even competitive people jumped ship fast. Network effects of Xbox live appear ambiguous. It's unclear how badly the system could have been doing without xbl and titanfall. Obviously the "me and my 10 friends" and the people that use that canard continue to embarrass themselves.

And now for some random predictions. I will inscribe these on the wedding ring I give to aquamarine:

1. Sunset overdrive will be the latest in a long line of insomniac's "valuable self-owned IP". I just don't see the game hitting at all. Developer is not a big name, the art style is just not there for the bro audience, not enough Xbones out there, and super crowded October. Needed to be out in September. It will probably launch with like 235k and someone will post "what an amazing tie ratio!!" And then "congrats insomniac and Microsoft!!!" The same way one would post congratulations Microsoft for stuffing the channel last year.

2. Sony won't update the firmware until fall. No one will change buying behavior but there will be yelping on here. Some will say "but Sony isn't making any moves!!!"

3. The last of us ps4 should debut around...150k? Not a huge success. Basically enough to make it worthwhile and ltd will be good but nothing ground breaking.

4. Mario kart 8 actually will be the lowest selling Mario kart in a while and polygon will publish a huge manifesto on their correctness.

5. Sony has established a dominant position in terms of software. I predict very few if any third party exclusives on Xbox going forward. Still Phil spencer will tweet "games!" Next May and start an avatar feud. Yoshida will make an unfunny joke about the HTC one for the third time.

6. The generation is decided but it will be interesting to guess when xbone passes Wii u. Maybe December?

7. I think this really does count as a price drop and not just a sku change. First the barrier to entry did legitimately drop. Second I'm not sure new 499 bundles are still being manufactured. And third even if they are no one gives a flying fuck about kinect so I don't see why we have to pretend anyone cared before.

From what I have read, correct me if I am wrong, the Halo series is still on. They have not yet started filming it, and they are in negotiations with Showtime to also show it in addition to Xbox Gold subscribers. It seems like a separate thing from the MS studio that just got laid off.

Its not a pricecut, they unbundled kinect to get it to that price. Pricedrop is still to come IMO soon. I expect this time next year you will see XBO $50 cheaper then PS4.

I commented before these systems launched that PS4 would be the global leader for Gen8. The last few months show me that is true.

But is the Xbox One doomed? From what I gather it is selling well- just not at the fantastic levels of the PS4. As first year libraries go, it is building a nice catalog of games. Is it feasible that the Xbox One just sits at second place with a nice library of games or do people think MS is looking to kill off the system?
