This news is sad. Can the studio be saved somewhat by Lasseter and Disney?

Personally, I wouldn't want that if Miyazaki and Takahata are done. It'd be a shadow of what it once was simply to keep the name around and the end result would dilute the pool of great stuff more than jank like Earthsea already had.

Sad news. I just watched Kingom of Dreams and Madness the other day. Terrific documentary, can't recommend it enough.

I for one loved The Wind Rises. And Up On Poppy Hill was a really enjoyable film. I didn't like Arrietty. While I don't think the studio was putting out their peak material, I still really loved what they put out.

And I actually think the Wind Rises is THAT good, it just suffered from editing/pacing. But it was a beautiful film.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
What does it mean when they say "shut down animation production"? They're an animation company. I'm assuming it's shut down altogether then. Ah, well, maybe if they made their movies easier to purchase I would have been able to buy both my sisters and myself copies of all their good movies. But alas, they never seemed to have wanted my money. And honestly the last films I saw of thiers were Arriety and Poppy Hill. Neither particularly great movies.

They're only producing it and Goro Miyazaki si directing, the actual production is outsourced.

so this is probably how they will do it in the future?

producing all the stuff outside and with a core staff doing legacy IP administration+planning and directing

I can't believe it's actually happening. That's very sad to hear; Ghibli's made some of the greatest animated films of all time. I'll at least have Marnie to look forward to.

There is still the museum, and theoretically there'll be a skeleton crew managing IPs and merchandising. But essentially, yeah.

There has been talk about them just becoming an IP management company, putting out releases of the older works, the merchandise, etc.

I presume it means they're not going to stop selling their catalog titles, merchandise and so forth. They're just not going to do any new productions.

I doubt the main problem behind the closing is financial.

everything in the entertainment industry is financial.

it's sad to hear this. a true work of art each film they put out was.

not really a fan of anime but their movies had a much broader appeal. sad to see them go.

According to the rumors it is, though. They don't want to outsource the animations, but due to producing in Japan their movies cost an exorbitant amount of money to produce - which in turn makes them not profitable anymore.

I would disagree.

I cant think of any animation in the period that came close to arrietys production values and while the ending was a bit unsatisfactory due to its open endedness, its still a great movie

Also, obligatory from the documentary on Ghibli:

God damn that is fucking hardcore lol. I now want to watch a movie where he's a badass Clint Eastwood cowboy and those are his parting words. Then he starts to walk towards the sunset, and a badass song starts playing as the ladies and children cry their goodbyes.

While I'd prefer something more concrete like a press release it's still really sad news. While I've never been that big of a Ghibli fan I've enjoyed a lot of their films and see them as as such an important part of the industry. At least we will still have all the talent they've fostered over the years. And I for one welcome out new CGI overlords.

i'm actually a little bummed my kids aren't gonna have fresh ghibli material as they grow up. well, at least the back catalog is 99.9% impeccable.

Disney aren't interested in their own 2D Animation branch, they sure as hell aren't going to buy an anime studio.

2D animation in cinema is basically dead.

I'm reading a history book, of sorts, about Disney's animation stuff and I wonder what Walt would think about his company now.
