Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
thats a bit naive, MS is doing this to increase the XO install base. the game will surely bomb compared to being a multiplatform. i just don't see this game selling well this way.

You seem to think you're disagreeing with me, but you're not. My point was that Microsoft wouldn't throw money at securing (what's likely to be proven timed) exclusivity for the game if it didn't think the measure would prove to be financially worthwhile -- this in itself isn't just limited to Microsoft's cut from sales as the platform holder, which is what you appear to think I'm alluding to.

This is a dumb move when you consider that it took the previous Tomb Raider game releasing on five systems (360/PS3/PC/XB1/PS4) to become profitable. Microsoft must have offered up a ton of money to make Square/Eidos agree. Oh well, I don't own an XB1 (yet) but I don't consider this a huge loss. The Tomb Raider reboot was an okay but not necessarily great game.

So if MSFT bought SE as a whole, you would be ok then?

More like hire your own developers and build up a studio.
Then create a franchises within the same genre.

Profit.
Especially long term, if you hired the right developers and they can continue to develop more awesome games.

The first game sold over 7 million copies. It is extremely likely they would've made a sequel anyway.

Bayo 2 was a game that would've been cancelled if Nintendo hadn't stepped in.

Not the same thing at all. Pure moneyhats just suck.

Lol, possibly the single most ridiculous post in the thread, no offense.

Certainly, there are some overreactions, but you talking about where adults share their opinions rather angsty teenagers is far more hilarious.

S-E still thought that wasn't satisfactory. So why not look for outside funding?

I love how Darrell Gallagher on the tumbler posts tells people to post comments and they'd respond to any questions when there's no way they'll respond to crap.

NeoGaf in a nutshell:

PS4 exclusive: "Great move Sony, good on you guys *hugs ps4*

Xbox One exclusive: "Fuck M$$$$$$$, using shitloads of cash again to actually compete in a business world, I'm not buying it! (I own a Xbox One, or at least I'm saying that to seem less biased)."

ther's no issue with kamiya game being exclusibe to xone here

What an idiotic company, going to the great lengths they did to increase brand awareness with the reboot, and give away all those benefits to a single publishers.

I really hope it doesnt hurt the brand too much.

I simply can't understand why there is not even a PC version, that is the most crazy part about this for me. If all Microsoft wants to do is have their own Uncharted (which is their obvious reason for buying this franchise) then why also kill a PC version? No PC-gamer will buy an Xbox One just to play this, so all you do is lose sales.

Anyway, on the console side of things it is an incredibly smart move by MS, and probably a dumb one by SE. But then again, it is not like SE has done anything smart for quite a while now.

The salt here on GAF will be glorious though, this is even bigger than Bayonetta 2 (especially since that game wouldn't exist without Nintendo anyway). Moneyhats don't get any larger than this.

Even when I eventually get a xbone, I'd only get tomb raider on PC. First console exclusive version of tomb raider and now this? Fuck you too, square.

This is crap...

I have both systems, just so I can play exclusives, but there is no way I am buying this.

You have exclusives that are made in house.

You have exclusives, like the recent Sunset Overdrive, where the developer gets to keep control of their product, so staying on one system makes sense.

You have exclusives, like Bayonetta 2, where one of the big companies helps fund the game which would have never been made otherwise.

With all of these I have no problem buying the game and is the reason I own all the major systems.

Then you have crap like this where one company pays to keep the game off other systems. This is complete anti-consumer shit. This is not helping the gamer. This is not creating exciting content for your fans. This is not making me want to support your company by hiring the most talented artist in the industry and giving them a chance to wow me. This is 100% complete mafia bullshit of taking out all competition and leaving me one single choice.

fuck you I am not supporting this...

It was funny reading posts like this about Titanfall a year ago. Then the real story came out that the game almost got cancelled because they ran out of money, and Microsoft stepped in to fund it, thus making it exclusive.

We all heard the reports that Square Enix was disappointed by Tomb Raider's sales last year. We don't know what kind of things were going on behind the scenes with these projects.

Oh fdamn.. Wamted to play the next one fully next gen Tombraider on my PS4...
Hopefully timed exclusive for me. But smart for MS and nice for Xbone owners.
Tomtaider DE was pretty good imo.

Interesting. I have no problem with this. In the other thread about "What would it take for people to buy an Xbox One" most of the people in it said "Exclusives."

Well, I guess it's apparent that when they said "exclusives," what they actually meant were "exclusives that we didn't first assume were multiplatform."

Supidest decision ever. They just lost millions of sales. By holiday 2015 how much do you think the PS4 sales will be? They're really comfortable ignoring that installed base? Don't get me started on europe when nothing MS does will change sales over there. PS4 has already won that market. This will not get me to buy a XB1 at all.

Or the Xbox One DE was complete shit compared to the PS4 version.
Or that the install base for the PS4 is massively larger than the Xbox One and therefore SE just cut out a ton of possible sells.

Or you can bitch and moan about how everyone is Sony here and not look at facts.

I think you're severely overstating that one.

well that's like bayonetta 2, but for Xbone.. and it sucks for people who don't own the platform.

That's a business deal that made fundamental sense though.

Sega had canceled the project as part of their wider pull-out from large scale console development, so they sold the assets and publishing rights to a publisher who wanted an extra core game.

Similarly, at least Dead Rising 3 seemed to be Microsoft helping out a somewhat troubled project from a troubled publisher, and was not a huge hit anyway.

Titanfall was a new IP that was a deeply troubled project that they helped fund over the finish line.

Here, I don't see much reason to believe the project is off the rails, and it's way outside the sales range you would conceivably want to do this for on the publisher's end.

It would be like Capcom making Resident Evil 7 an exclusive. That's the kind of sales volume we're looking at here (or more).

This would be true if Sony was actually going out and securing 3rd party exclusives which they are not and havent in a very long time.

They probably should though. Sony not tossing money at 3rd party pubs is a bit of a weakness.

I'm not sure that's how it would go if Sony had bought the rights to Rise of the Tomb Raider and kept it off other platforms.

So it's on 360?

Since they didn't say XBox One exclusive, has to mean 360. MS is starting to get really specific with their wording. It's kind of annoying.

OP you should add this

Ugh, what steaming hot bullshit. Spinning like this wins no fans. Just say MS offered a good deal and the option to work closely with a single console manufacturer will benefit the game.

I mean, I know Square Enix are terrible at business decisions, but this seems like a bad idea even by their standards. TR2013 was a big success, and they're now going to squander a lot of that and piss off a huge portion of the fanbase for a short term gain only.

Also, lol that a game releasing in late 2015 is going to be cross-gen. Why even fucking bother?!

This is right on.

I think Sunset Overdrive looks great and I'm sure the X1 will have other great games. I think exclusive games are a great thing.

But buying out other gamers and then keeping them from enjoying the games they've been playing is not a practice I will support.

Exclusive third party games should be a thing of the past.
I guess I'm done with Tomb Raider for the time being.

Longer term this move doesn't make sense either. SE are leaving the door open for a competing franchise to come along on PS4 to capture the Uncharted/TLOU fan base. That will just marginalise the Tomb Raider IP if they decide to go multiplatform for the one after.

This feels like a very short term gain for SE, I thought they were out of the woods already with their success on mobile and F2P. Clearly not.

It really does not make any sense at all , do really they think TR can go against UC ?
I think this just show how crazy Japanese companies are to tell the truth since they seem to like fucking up there IP.

Did Sony buy exclusively a game from another publisher in the past?

Not sure how that logic works. Both machines have a nigh on identical architecture. There's no gain to be had hidden away in the X1.

Well.....I'm sure the X1 still has SOME un-tapped power left to be used :l. I guess I'm just trying to find a positive here :D.

The best thing about this is SE releasing the definitive edition on PS4, with the improved Lara model that will be used in the sequel... to only be put on Xbox One. Ha. Fuck you, PlayStation gamers.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

Which I will gladly ... not buy. Thank you :).

Tomb Raider was one of my most favorite games of last gen. I can't believe this bullshit. I'm not buying another fucking console. There's not even going to be a PC version. This fucking sucks. Square Enix and MS can go fuck themselves.

May be a smart move for both parties.

You know Sony's going to push UC4 haaaard in 2015. TR has its fans; some feel it's better than UC. But it will get lost in the shuffle with gamers with less income, probably choosing to but it later. And cheaper.

It is a huge gamble though for CD. I mean, many who skipped over TR but played it on Plus would be amped for the new sequel. Square is really ok with missing out on those sales for a year or how ever long the exclusive deal lasts?

They better hope MS pushed the game hard to counter UC4. I mean, MS also has a new Halo coming in 2015, right?

I dunno, given the exclusives MS has thrown money at and the resultant non-existent bumps for the XB1 userbase, I think you're over-estimating MS's ability to predict what to throw money at to help their platform.

I can wait for the 2016 PC release. I don't think this is a huge system seller.

HrOk6qB.jpg

Exactly my thought on this.

In my opinion, it is like throwing money randomly for both MS and SQEX.
I prefer to see this budget go for a new studio title for MS instead.
Firstly, Tomb Raider Definitive Edition sells on PS4 almost doubled than XBO.
Secondly, that backlash from Tomb Raider fans might make XBO image even worst.

I hope the money they got for this is worth the negative reaction from part of their fanbase and potential customers. Just taking one look at the comments on that link in the OP shows how, er... "popular" this move has been.

Exclusives brings a certain interesting dynamic into the video game market, it would be so boring if all had the same stuff. And it brings some juice into NeoGAF threads as well :p This thread should be an interesting one to moderate

This is a straight up money hat though, it's not the same as something like Bloodborne in which Sony funds/helps development.
There's not many examples of Sony buying a third party title and preventing it from releasing on other consoles.

This is Microsoft paying to keep a game off other platforms. And make no mistake it woudl have come to PC and PS4 but MS made sure that won't happen.

But don't let things like context stop your console warz garbage.
