Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

What can Ridley do that's interesting for Smash Bros anyway? I haven't played a Metroid game so I don't really understand the appeal beyond 'flying dinosaur man'. He breathes fire or something right?

Does he have some sort of weapons or iconic attacks that he can do other than flying around, clawing, and breathing fire?

I mean Bowser does most of that already so it's not like he doesn't have enough stuff to be made playable, I'm just curious why he's such a big deal.

I'm not allowed to complain because between Villager, Rosalina, and Robin I've been absolutely spoiled with newcomers this time around, but I'm still holding out hope for Ridley, even if it's senseless. He's the last newcomer I really really want (besides a Ryhthm Heaven character which I feel is more or less a sure thing).

Same here. Once Robin and Lucina were announced I was set. Every one of the newcomers (except maybe Greninja) interests me in some way. At this point my only other newcomer wants (Shulk and Ridley) would just be icing on the cake.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Haha, I definitely got spoiled with newcomers as well. Actually I got spoiled by all Smash games. Also Sakurai just know how to make me to appreciate the characters that I didn't know that I would want to, such as Wii Fit Trainer, Greninja, etc.

While I heavily appreciate most of the newcomers we got, I seriously hope the part of the Gematsu's leak about Shulk and Rhythm Heaven guys is real. Especially the part about Shulk. Not because I don't like RH (I actually LOVED the DS chapter, and I'm eager to know anything about a new chapter, which would be for 3DS...when will it come?!? >_> ), but because Xenoblade is such a fantastic game that I want it to be represented as much as possible in Smash Bros. Plus, the Monado is very cool :p

Metroid's main bad guy. Heck he's been in every smash one way or another and both of the current metroid reps are the same person :p

Tail attacks and grabbing attacks.

I think people mostly want a Metroid rep that isn't Samus.

Flying dragon man, I'll have you know. And you're downplaying how different he would be from Bowser just by virtue of being a character designed for air combat, plus there's all his nifty tricks with his tail that tends to comprise more than a little of his moveset.

Take a good look at Smash Bros Demo's CSS.

I noticed that the order of characters weren't even same between two different console. As you can see that Metroid series were between Donkey Kong and Legend of Zelda for Wii U, awhile Metroid is right after Legend of Zelda for 3DS. Also there are several characters' locations that have been changed as well.

He attack with his tail, breathes balls of fire (not like Charizard or Bowser), attack with his legs (can lift someone up) and he's very fast and agile.

I don't mean to downplay him, I just don't know a lot about him. Being based around air combat would be pretty cool since most of the big heavy characters are very ground-focused (other than Charizard kinda).

I guess part of it is just that Metroid doesn't have that many characters to choose from?

We haven't heard these character's victory themes yet (and some potential characters not revealed yet), but... some ideas

Charizard (how is this not the actual victory theme of the Pokemon series!?)
Alternate Charizard (again, why wasn't this used?)

Jigglypuff (somehow turn this into a victory theme)
Or This (the route Jigglypuff is found in)

Badass Mewtwo victory theme in here somewhere. Also ties in the criminally underused Pokemon reference in Smash; Team Rocket.

Ness (Boy that was easy. Let Lucas keep the Brawl one)

Mii (Around the :43 mark)

Ganondorf (the first 10 seconds)
Alternate (orchestrated of course)
The first 10 seconds of this with some kind of flourish to cap it off would work
Ganon has a lot of awesome music to draw from. It was be incredibly disappointing if he doesn't have his own

Diddy Kong
Diddy Alternate

Wolf
Falco

I'm not well versed in Kid Icarus or Fire Emblem music, so I couldn't think of anything for Ike, Robin, Lucina or Palutena.

Yes to bringing back Ness's Melee victory theme! As stupid as it sounds, his ugly Brawl victory theme literally ruined the game for me.

I already complain enough for smashgaf.

Only character that I like thus far (and want to use) is greninja.
Give me Isaac and/or Ridley sakurai ):

It makes sense, because the space reserved for character icons have different dimensions. The 3DS ones are much skinner, and there will almost certainly be 5 or more rows.

Part of it is that, but if you were going to pick a Metroid character Ridley's basically the best choice for representation. He's the second-most recurring character after Samus and her primary rival. Samus being the sole playable rep for Metroid also makes perfect sense, considering she's typically alone in fighting unreasonable odds against alien armies so I'm not saying it's a crime that he's not in either.

There's also the slight problem where he's a character who's very clearly designed to be a boss and unfairly mobile so who knows how well that'd translate into Smash.

I think it would be pretty neat if he was kind of like a reverse Little Mac. Awkward on the ground - slow, attacks are mostly weak and have weird hitboxes - but deadly in the air. Of course that doesn't entirely fit him since he's shown to be more than capable in either situation, but it's an idea to make him interesting for Smash Bros without just relying on "has a long tail to smack people around with."

Flying Space dragon who's had some pretty good designs from a visual standpoint.

Main Metroid antagonist and one of the darkest/evilest Nintendo villains, also known as the "god of death" in instruction manuals.

Unique in that he would be a heavy character that's based around air combat, uses grabs, tail attacks, fire balls and lasers.

He's just synonymous with the Metroid franchise, he should have been in the game before they added Samus in twice.

Get Inside Her!
So what if we get Ridley and he's a Charizard clone.

P.S. I bet/hope Bowser's gonna have his classic Mario Bros. fireball-shoot as one of his custom moves yep yep.

That'd be a nice callback. But instead we'll probably get an arrangement of the opening jingle here:
Mii Fighters are Smash Bros. representatives, so I doubt they'd use something from Wii Sports. Brawling, swordfighting, and shooting aren't sports-related.

My most wanted newcomer for Smash is Paper Mario. I will turn him into the next Ridley after these Smashes come out.

He would have a weird amiibo if he was a newcomer this time around ( ._.)

He does, it was on the Nintendo live show at E3.

Here

Neat, didn't notice that before.

They're still making it look like custom specials won't be a part of the CSS though...

Also "Critical hit bonus"

Is that supposed to mean you can get critical hits as a bonus or that critical hits are part of the game and this improves them?

I really hope random crits aren't a part of the game.

He's a big deal mainly because people love Metroid and there's only one Metroid representative atm. And he has a lot of significance in the story.

As for gameplay it depends which version of Ridley. (Meta Ridley has lasers and missiles for example). But honestly, plenty of the characters in Smash aren't that interesting to begin with. For example all Bowser really does in most games is stomp and shoot fireballs, but they added moves in Smash.

Smash is not beholden to the rules of the series it draws from. This should be the most obvious point of the entire series, but a lot of people continuously forget it.

Huh, just checked the site and I see your right. I don't think a reference to, at least, Wii Sports would hurt though. It was the game that elevated its popularity.

Ha, but his losing animation would have perfect for Brawl's full body losing animations.

Mii characters using actual themes from the Wii ___ games would be so much better than the generic weapons they got. :/

Looks like you can pair a layout to an Amiibo. Scanning them in should be quick.

People should really stop saying this as if it's some sort of worthy compromise.

The moves you want to use are going to be dependent on the opponents character pick and maybe even stage picks in some cases, being able to store a single moveset on an amiibo does nothing unless you just happen to be lucky and face the character your specials are customed for in every game.

It just massively dilutes the potential of custom moves if you could only ever use the one moveset stored on your amiibo.
