If you're not, you should be using pistols 90% of the time.
IIRC, enemies have a few invincibility frames after getting shot or when you buzz them and they do that dance-y head-bob; so when you're spitting 8 rounds of full-auto AK fire, only 3 or 4 are actually hitting.
Always go for pistol headshots, as well. If you're low on ammo, Steel Fist some faces (R1 while running, then melee) or Brutal Combo some fools (Square, Triangle, Square) and get twice the amount of ammo they normally drop.
Wave after wave of enemies with perfect aim. It pissed me off how enemies a mile away could shoot you while they looked like little dots in your screen.
When I first joined I always thought it was "Link to the Past". It's awesome because it can still apply.
I hear bad things about 3 all the time. But doesn't the gameplay mirror 2? If the combat is as bad as 1 then fuck it. However, I'm easy to entertain so the story may or may not do it for me but if the gameplay sucks I'll probably just stop playing immediately. When I get to it, that is.
I always thought the same thing and Link to the Past is still my first reaction.
Yeah I recently just finished U1 myself and had all the same gripes. Plus I'm worried about 2 and 3 cause you do get a lot of people saying it's much the same (even if it is improved). But my goal is to get them completed before 4 comes out. Now I'm working on Guild Wars 2, Last of Us Remastered and a Skies of Arcadia Replay so suffice it to say I was not immediately drawn to the sequels.
Decent game, but definitely felt average to me, especially the gunplay, which was poor after playing Gears. Really got annoying when the "monsters" came into it.
The game has not aged well, it was great in 2007, but still, if the game is too difficult for you on normal it's probably because you are bad in this game.
Sorry, don't want to insult but on normal anyone with a little experience with cover based shooters should breeze through it (there are some difficulty spikes though but nothing too crazy).
Was thinking the same. I remember thinking it is pretty awesome. Remember playing it on crushing for the platinum I enjoyed it so much. Maybe it hasn't aged well since I haven't played it 3 or 4 years.
Played through it 2 weeks or so ago. Found it to be so incredibly dull. The first 30 minutes even if so inverosimil (why are there explosive canisters in a long lost temple?) were the best because you were actually exploring.
Then everything goes downhill. Platforming is never entretaining, it's all so automated that it never feels engaging at all, you see all of this stuff crumbling and collapsing around you and all you do is continue mashing.
Shooting feels terrible, there's no weight or kick to your guns, they all feel like toys, and encounters are never entretaining. While I do feel enemies are bullet sponges, they all take 3-4 bullets, it's just that they barely react to being hit and go as if it's nothing. There's encounter after encounter and it never picks up.
Not even the vampires at the end game feel engaging.
And the characters all feel so one dimensional, I never understood why they are so well liked. I guess because Elena doesn't have a bikini breast plate and knows how to use a gun and Nathan can throw a wity one liner every now and then.
Visuals are still outstanding even though they are already showing their age, but it still feels alright.
I'll play 2 soon and see if it's all cracked up to be. Wasn't expecting much here because everyone said it'd be a little on the plain side, but it still managed to underwhelm me.
I played it last year and was really disappointed with it, still not played the 2nd or 3rd game because I just can't motivate myself to do it, the first was too much of a struggle to get through (not difficulty wise, just through boredom of the same repetitive gameplay throughout).
I always thought the same thing and Link to the Past is still my first reaction.

Yup. I want to beat these 3 before 4 myself. But after 1 I may just start Ratchet and Clank HD trilogy since I got that recently and play 2 after that.
My biggest problem with this game has to be the ammo and the aiming. The aiming is just off. I don't know what it is.
I really liked the first game. Great setting and pacing. And it dared to be colorful and light-hearted in an era when most shooters went for dark, gritty, and serious. These were all hallmarks that would come to define subsequent great ND games (Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us). Not the tightest mechanics, but solid with well designed arena-style combat sequences. Not as good as its sequel, but it's one of my favorite PS3 exclusives.

I'm on chapter 16 and major spoiler alert. But you know what, I don't care. The only series that it would piss me off (storyline wise) is GTA. I just want this game done.
Yup. Best story, best atmosphere, best pacing, best balance of puzzles/combat/traversal. It was also the only game to have a surprise at the end which the two sequels copied. It is also the only game in the series to not really have any bad parts to it, as well as having the best chapter in the series: Upriver.
I hear people rave about this story but it's pretty basic IMO. Guy looking for treasure, bad guys want it too, they clash while looking for it,
guy finds treasure, twist, need to let treasure go because there are more important things
.
The story isn't bad but I felt the way they told it was lacking. The drama between characters really wasn't there and everyone was so positive and joking all the time. There were no subtleties to keep people talking afterwards. Just that was fun, time to move on.
It was an average game... Did some things really well, had pretty graphics and fairly interesting characters and settings but yeah If he combat was pretty rough at times and it had a fair number of glitchs
Yeah, UC1 has not aged well at all gameplay and graphics wise. I remember when I started an Uncharted trilogy replay marathon last year, and almost wanted to drop-out mid-way through UC1 and just skip to 2 already.
It's funny because I played the game an obscene amount of times when I first got my PS3 (mainly because it was one of the only 3 games I had for the PS3 back in 2008).
Disagree. It was the same shoot-out sequence you played over and over and over and over throughout the whole game followed by a run up and punch, two button quick time event to finish off the "Boss". Actually thought that was very lacking for an end Boss.
I played UC1 for the first time about a week ago. It isn't a bad game but it has definitely aged and doesn't compare well against the other entries. Even Golden Abyss, which I abandoned about 3/4ths in, is better aside from the touchscreen stuff. My biggest gripe is the shooting. The shooting mechanics and combat encounters aren't satisfying enough to make up about 99% of the game.

I always thought this too but I was never sure if people were talking about Uncharted as a whole or just the sequels, as I've only played the first I can only comment on that and I didn't think it was anything special at all, it flows fine but I don't think it reflects very well on video game storytelling if this is considered some of the best out there (is it?).
My favourite uncharted game, played it so many times back then. I'm sorry though OP, uncharted is not hard on normal, if you think it is then crushing will rip your balls off, Still got to play 3 when I get a replacement ps3 though. UC1 was also my very first platinum.
At the time when it came out, i thought the game was amazing ! I had a lot of fun and the graphics back in the days were absolutely crazy good ! + i liked the fact that it happened at the same location instead of the globe trotting in U2 and U3. It was really fun !
Of course if i play it now, i don't think i would be amazed since many progress have been made in the genre.
I made it like maybe half way through before I got bored and stopped playing. I still have Uncharted 2 and 3 so maybe I'll just skip 1 and hopefully won't be too lost by 2.
DF isn't a chore because it has so much shooting. The quality of that shooting is relatively poor.
Uncharted 2 is greatly improves every aspect of the gameplay and is enjoyable. I always tell people that no matter how they feel about 1, try 2, and at least get to the Nepal levels.
Huh what a timing, I just got the entire trilogy in my mail today and was supposed to start a playthrough tomorrow!
*reads thread*
Huh.
Oh well, I'll give it a shot. But yeah it was big at the time partly because it was the first big PS3 game at a time when PS3 was tanking with terrible outlook on the future. Sony has done an incredible job with the console, the turnaround in later years is impressive.
This is not a difficult game. It's still a lot more polished compared to other early PS3 titles. I enjoyed it since it was the only alternative to TR, beat it on crushing without that much difficulty to be honest. And this was my second 3rd person game right after RE4 on the Wii so take that as you will.

I don't think very highly of the game design, but it's actually still my favorite in terms of a sense of place. Being in one area was so much cooler than globetrotting.
You have so little ammo for your guns. So you see some dropped from an enemy, you get out of cover to go get it and you're dead or almost dead because you can only take like 2 shots.
Nah. They can't. At all. The third shot drops them. You're just missing shots. Or you're out of range. This is why I can say you suck without feeling bad. You are missing or out of range and haven't realized it yet.
Hint: they are probably dodging you. Try nailing them once, getting them to dodge first, then relock on them and send them to fiery death bullet hell. Break up your rhythm, because that's what they are trying to do with their dodging. Except for the shotgun guys, which will normally just charge you. And consider getting closer. There's no sniper rifle.
I waste more ammo trying to go for headshots than if I just sprayed. In the beginning the game was pushing me to use the "brutal combo" on enemies and get double the ammo. Ha, well, I can't stand and fight long enough to take an enemy out. Too many fucking bullets hitting me.
I almost gave up but I think I'm towards the end so I'll push through. I really wanted to play 2 and 3 but I don't like starting a series from the middle. From what I've seen of 2, everything looks improved but my god this game is frustrating.
Uncharted 2 is a masterpiece. I know I've given you a hard time about not knowing that you suck (which you do--you assuredly totally suck at this game,) but even though you suck...badly, you should continue on and at least suck your way through U2.
I played it when I got my PS3 in 2008, and haven't again. It was a solid game back then, getting by on the presentation and spectacle. I imagine it has aged fairly poorly, since UC2 bested it tenfold at everything
Still like it. Uncharted 2 eclipsed it in every way of course. Never really had any issues I can remember with the shooting either; there were a few spikes on Crushing I remember being a pain but that's about it.
It was a fun romp and of course at the time it was arguably the best looking HD conse game which probably got it some attention too; particularly as one of the earlier showcase exclusives on PS3.
I might have to pop it back in an try it again to see if it holds up for me.
EDIT : the only bit I remember disliking was the jet ski because they borked the alignment of the controls to the design of the encounters. I love being able to drive vehicles and was very pressed with the effects for the water and the levels but sadly the control issues did ruin it. I was doubly annoyed when I realised this probably caused them to drop vehicle control for the sequels. I'd love some action sequences invving vehicles I'm actually driving; would love to see that in U4.
I don't think running out of ammo is too common in Uncharted. Even on crushing playthroughs I usually had heaps.
Nah. They can't. At all. The third shot drops them. You're just missing shots. Or you're out of range. This is why I can say you suck without feeling bad. You are missing or out of range and haven't realized it yet.
Again, we're getting back to your original contention that you don't suck. Yet you are presenting us with contradictory evidence.
The most common complaint about the platforming is "it's too easy" bro. I hate to break that bad news to you.
Uncharted 2 is a masterpiece. I know I've given you a hard time about not knowing that you suck (which you do--you assuredly totally suck at this game,) but even though you suck...badly, you should continue on and at least suck your way through U2.
No. I'm missing because the aiming sucks. Not only that, the game doesn't make it easy to aim when each time you pop your head out you immediately get raped with bullets. Also, I didn't say the platforming sucks or it was easy what I said was the camera is awful.
The only reason anybody ever gave a shit about this game is because it came out when the PS3 had virtually nothing as far as exclusives go. It was always mediocre to average at best.
Well and the fact that it has a cool premise, great characters and was a lot of fun to play through. Oh and it spawned one of the most noteworthy series of the 7th gen consoles, no biggie.

It's still easily the best looking game from 2007, with the exception of Crysis. The environmental design is still outstanding, really giving a better sense of place than any of the other games in the series. Even after playing the sequels, I would still consider Drake's Fortune to be my favourite entry.
Everytime I see people criticizing Uncharted with the "bullet sponge" argument I understand why there are "Very Easy" difficulties in some games.
I've beaten every Uncharted in the hardest difficulty and the only single player enemies who could be considered "bullet spongey" are the brutes from Uncharted 3 (Uncharted 1 and 2 combat is flawlessly designed, Uncharted 3 is worse because brutes are truly bullet sponges as in sniper headshots and grenades/RPG don't kill them quick like in previous games). Everybody else can be quickly killed. In fact, if you don't kill the armored enemies quickly there's no way you can beat any of these games on the highest difficulty. They have armor for a reason; to differentiate them from normal enemies and make you aim at their heads instead of brainlessly shooting everywhere.
No. I'm missing because the aiming sucks. Not only that, the game doesn't make it easy to aim when each time you pop your head out you immediately get raped with bullets. Also, I didn't say the platforming sucks or it was easy what I said was the camera is awful.
So, you need a game that's "easy to aim," but you are still insisting you don't suck. My girlfriend at the time smoked through Uncharted on Normal and she literally only played Q-Bert, Critter Crunch, and Pixel Junk Eden on any kind of regular basis.
They're not hard when the camera works. But countless times I would hold the stick in a direction so he can grab onto a ledge and he just misses. If people want to say I suck at it fine than I suck at Uncharted but AC does the platforming better. Hell, The Saboteur does it better. The camera in this game during some of the platforming sections is just terrible. I'm not complaining about the platforming, it's the camera during some of these sequences. Most of the time I don't have a problem.
I'm on chapter 16 and major spoiler alert. But you know what, I don't care. The only series that it would piss me off (storyline wise) is GTA. I just want this game done.
Yeah, this game isn't that good. If anybody asks, I always recommend they just start with the 2nd one. Most of the problems aren't COMPLETELY removed in the sequel, but almost everything is much improved, and annoyances minimized.
