However, I think this kind of reception could actually make developers like Sega, Namco and Tecmo Koei that Nintendo platforms are receptive of hunting-games in general, not just Monster Hunter, and be there on 3DS' successor, along side Monster Hunter. I mean: the beginning of a generation is the period with the highest possibility of support changing, since it's a brand new start. That's when I'd expect to see more efforts from non-Capcom developers for hunting games on Nintendo platforms.

Well, I mean, on a basic level there isn't going to be a Vita 2 so if they want to release on handhelds and aren't aiming at mobile phones, this is going to be a one choice scenario.

500k units would put FFEX among the best-selling FF spin-offs ever, along with Dissidia and Type-0 (Revenant Wings, Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus were prequel / sequel).

Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon and Final Fantasy Tactics were both >1 million titles too. Mixing a strong brand with a strong genre on a popular platform should have high results.

Isn't the whole argument that a MH-clone could perform really well on 3DS, similar to the PSP clones, and that FF:EX is the closest the 3DS is getting?
500k would put it at around that level.

I think a FFxMH game on PSP in 2010 would've outsold all the others MH-clones, but I will be surprised if Final Fantasy Explorers sells 500k on 3DS.

It still can do it, of course, but I feel DQ:EX would be a better suited game for 3DS.

FFEX looks like shit though, very cheap and lazy. For it to sell 500k it would need good word of mouth.

Yeah hate to say that... but it may be another attempt similar to Load or Arcana on PSP.
(Just watched the stream by SE so it still may turn out to be a good game).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

To be more accurate (Famitsu; from Gamedatamuseum)

[PSX] Final Fantasy Tactics {1997.06.20} - 641,073 / 1,270,806
[PSX] Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon {1997.12.23} - 648,901 / 1,165,796

Yep, both were released in 1997, too!

Yes, that's one of the reasons why I said DQ:EX would be better suited for 3DS

DQ:M games on 3DS can't look more cheap and lazy and yet they sell >800k.

That's a bit different though. Pokemon also looks cheap and lazy and it sells millions. The question is, how many of the people who play DQM would want to play a co-op action version of DQ? Then again, Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii looked fucking wretched too, and it sold almost 500k. So I bet there are a ton of DQ fans out there who would eat any garbage up.

Sure... Gundam + Musou = ...

Are we talking about the same Final Fantasy franchise where its last sequel (Lightning Returns) of a main entry sold relatively bad? The times where everything Final Fantasy related sells huge amounts are long gone, maybe even since PS1. In fact it became quite a toxic environment for spin-offs by the end of last gen, if the last CrystalChronicle games which sold very bad are any indication and even FF4Heroes sold quite bad. The only ones that aren´t as bad are the Dissidia ones and that´s likely due to the SmashBro-esque nostalgia overload, with a large variety of known FF characters.

I think the concept behind FFEx is promising and something they could use to build a franchise, but like Crystal Chronicles it has a limited appeal to FF fans that fell in love with the series with titles like FF7. In fact there aren´t any CGI cinematics ...
It has a lot similarities with Crystal Chronicles, the performance of these titles are likely far more telling, than sales of other Monster Hunter clones, or past glory days for spin-offs on PS1.

It was 1 million for gundam + 1 million for musou, lol

I did not take into account Tactics and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon because were released when the IP was at its peak, in a completely different era. Dissidia went close to 1m units too, but to be honest it was heavily promoted and had high production values, aside a ton of fanservice. FFEX, unfortunately, does not look as pushed, though an interesting project. My bet is 300k units but will see.

that´s true, to think that Musou titles actually were million sellers at one point, but still quite baffling that they actually went on record saying something like this for essentially a Gundam game, with no noteworthy relation with Musou other than gameplay.

I think it'll be hard for FFEX to do 500k too, but I think we can agree that it's bar which we can look at and say "yes there's a huge audience on the 3DS for MH-like games", which is how the topic came up. There really aren't any other valid examples.

Honestly I think at this point it's really too late in the game for 3rd parties to start putting the games on the system anyway. A successor is probably 2 years away so I don't see why they wouldn't just wait to start building a base on the 4DS.

Well, there have been a lot of new IPs selling well late in a console lifecycle. LBX on PSP, for example; Ni no Kuni, though overshipped, managed to sell close to 600k units.

I suspect Level 5 has another new IP for 3DS, but I think the crux of the issue is that I don't think a lot of other publishers are likely to launch new series this late.

Like, as an honest question, how many new IPs on 3DS have there been this year (either released or announced for release), especially in terms of anything with a budget?

I would rather think of Lightning Returns as a spin off, rather a mainline entry.

I remember duckroll posting last week how Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS won't support the Circle Pad Pro while it'll support the C-Stick on New 3DS. Well, it turns out there's something else making SSB a very "enhanced" title: Miiverse screens function is not supported when the game's played on 3DS/3DS XL. But it's supported when playing on New 3DS/New 3DS XL. This time, at least, it's not due to bullshit reasoning like the Circle Pad Pro thing, but there's (seemingly) a reason: memory size not being enough on 3DS to allow Miiverse (not even Internet Broswer is allowed while playing the game).

...This IMHO actually aligns with the rumours stating New 3DS has 2x 3DS' RAM, thinking about it.

Well I hope FFEX doesn't under-perform due to lack of quality, and make ppl say it was another third party's shitty cash-grab attempt so it doesn't count.
Seriously FFEX really doesn't look too hot... but we'll see.

I wouldn't be surprised if MH4G actually performs better on N3DS than normal models.

All MH4G demo units at TGS will be on the New 3DS, so if there is a performance increase, we might hear about it from fans who are able to compare it with MH4?

Are we considering 274k for a 3DS game selling "really well" now?

Spike Chunsoft didn't ship enough copies and it was sold out for 2 weeks, maybe 3, now i don't remember correctly, and those weeks were in the middle of December (the game was released on Dec.5)

after it was restocked the following week it was sold out again...

i think it could have reached 400k easily or more if it didn't had stock problems

hope for them this time with CHAIN version they will ship enough carts :D

The shop will open two hours before on Saturday 13th because lines are expected for Smash Bros for 3DS

Hw sales will be interesting next week with new models only one month away. In theory even with this disadvantage we should see a medium or big rise.

You think that if FFEX is successful in Japan (not sure what that'd be, but let's say over 500K) and Square decides to localize it (lol) that it could actually help out Monster Hunter in the West?

In the coming years, the "Smash 3DS HW bump" will probably need to have an asterisk for whatever comparisons are made with the 4DS or whatever.

Famitsu will once again prove their status as the superior tracker.

so are queues for smash forming already?
Just checked and no. Check again in two hours.

Why the big differences in sales for ps4 in Japan compared to everywhere else?

Why their tastes is so much different to ours?
