Although they did a good job, I refuse to accept it is completely natural shadow seen in real-life, it just doesn't look natural.

It can look like that. This has been cleared up by Rushy himself:

I have to admit that it took me a while to get used to this, but it is entirely physically accurate - we don't use fake shadows or mask sunlight by ambient occlusion, which often hides this 'effect'.

Under strong lighting conditions and from the right angle there won't be a shadow visible beneath the car. To show this I took a car out into the Evo car park, parked it so the sun was from directly behind and held a camera up in the air at similar angle to the chase camera.

Nothing is faked or baked in this image either ;) Number plates have been obviously obscured though.

Wow ijust saw this:

Alex Perkins (Art Director) and Scott Kirkland (Studio Technical Director) definitely get gold stars for their work on this game.

Rushy posted a real photo ... a real photo. I'll say it again, a REAL PHOTO. If you don't like reality, go play a lesser racer with sparkly graphics.

Are you accusing me of editing the photo? The photo Rushy provided doesn't show the ties of the car no underneath it, thus it does neither prove nor disprove.

They have a real time lighting system. Do you think it stops working at certain times of day and at certain angles? Rushy proved it. End of. Photographers take meticulous care to take photos in the right lighting conditions because they know that given the wrong lighting conditions the photo won't look right. With real time lighting, you aren't afforded that privilege.

Man these people playing in the playstation streams are bad drivers,I know I suck as well but it makes watching boring when people are just crashing to gain position.

So don't be an ass.

He's just noticing, as I did, that we don't start racing directly from the get into the car sequence (something that was shown during the PS4 reveal, IIRC).
More so, you may notice that this sequence uses assets from your previous race location, and not the one that's coming up.

Exactly.

do you want mathematical proof that lighting and shadows can work that way? . If need be I would be willing to work out the math with/for you. or is this going to turn into one of those moon landings are fake sort of thing inspite of repeated evidence to the contrary?

I wasn't interested in this Game at all, because i don't like Racing Games but all the Gifs changed my mind. I'll give the Plus Edition a try, it looks phenomenal >_>

With that guy I think it's the latter.

Mathematical proof? Lol, I would love to see you work-out the math for very complex situation such as this. Light scatter in all directions with different intensity depending on the luminosity of the object when once it hit it, even from a single point.

If you think you were going to scare me with the use of the word "math" you have failed.

Wtf is your problem? If those pictures didn't shut you up, I don't know what will.

Give it a break. You're shitting up the thread with this.

The fact that rushy even took fucking photos and responded at all to something like this is so far beyond amazing it's crazy. I would have pulled a Kamiya and just made you feel stupid.

i am aware. and no im not stupid enough to say that ignorantly as I said we can try and work it out. i mean if youre game. I have a presentation deadline this tuesday but the week after sure we can try working it out. Additionally the sharp contrasts in shadows you see probably arent a result of repeated reflections as you point out but as i said we can def try and work the math out. repeated reflections result in additional illumination not repeated shadowing to a that perceptable extent especially in the scenario youre pointing out.

Read your own post and look at Rushy's photo.

Nice post history there.

I guess a game this gorgeous is going to get nit-picked to death. It's inevitable. It's going to happen to The Order, Quantum Break, and Uncharted 4 as well.

Could you explain what your photo is meant to be illustrating? Is it direct sun shadow or light scatter?

The only way to solve such problem is to simulate it. Otherwise, you have to consider every single photon and every type of surface or at least a small enough packets of 'em.

lol i think the most fun part of "concern" posts in dc threads is the random directions the threads take now were talking math and lighting ... hahah never change neogaf.

So I can't pre-load the PS+ upgrade because I need to download the PS+ version as well, which won't be available until the 10th (UK)?

Is that correct?

That's not correct.

There's an upgrade option available on the store now (£34.99). It's been there since Wednesday. Just choose that and you'll have the full game downloaded and ready to play for the 10th.

approximations . how do they work? :) . yeah dude when youre ready to have a genuine conversation on this topic as I said im game. technically temperature laws are also "need to be verified" and relativity "needs to be verified" with small scale to large scale considerations... im going to stop now cause this going to lead no where. you obviously have your mind made up.

It is meant to illustrate that driveclub shadow is definitely missing something, the mini almost have no shadow at all when there should be at least different level of intensities.

Holy fucking shit, so people are nit picking the shadow the cars give off now in a view that is optional? Even though EVO has shown why it does that? WOW.

If you work-out the math, I would love to read/go-through it but not work on it :)

there are no perceivable "different levels of intensity" its a clean cut shadow in the pic youre using (the real world car)

It's really bloody annoying. I just want to be hyped for DC.

I still am, fuck it :D

I thought I couldn't get more hyped for this game, then I watched the Evo/Playstation Share broadcast where Rushy was playing, and the dude is grinning from ear to ear. You just know the team at Evo are super proud of what they've accomplished and it shows. Rushy is very endearing haha

Well I would too, the game is incredible. :)

Good job, guys.

I don't go into forza threads. Are there trolls like this in those threads nitpicking individual damn details???

Guys like this are only taking away enjoyment from people excited for this game and I think that's the agenda here.

I started to explain how it's possible, and that his reference picture isn't really a good enough proof that there should be a visible shadow given the situation the car is in with relation to the sun angle in the game picture here. His picture looks more like noon where the sun is directly over the car. I felt like it would have been a lost cause, since he doesn't even get the visual proof of it working. It felt like a situation where you talk in circles, especially if the person doesn't want to undrestand.

btw guys how many of you are going to be on the ps+ version? Im going to start off on that and then buy the game later probably. Was wondering what the differences as far as mechanics (mp mechanics) are between the two?

I know everyone here with impressions has the full version. But I was wondering if there are any/what the restrictions are for the ps+ version apart from the lack of tracks/cars. Essentially are some challenges/mp options in the full version but not in ps+?

(I think only someone from evo can answer this/unless someone has some info which ive overlooked?)

Very true. His interactions with the community here are always welcome.

Still going to beat his times though.... ;)

I guess it's mostly what happens when people can't wait any longer. Some are allready playing the game and the wait is just making people grumpy.
I'm also still hyped. Don't worry.

The shadow talk is hilarious though, but not entertaining for long.

somehow you just expect it in a DriveClub thread :(
