"A" primary character,

Chief is the main character and hero.

NO.

The end.
Thank You.

And the playable character doesn't really matter to me. All I want is a kickass campaign with huge battles, open levels, an interesting story, and Scarabs or some sort of replacement (Harvesters?)

Oh and when I say huge battles I mean the Halo 3 The Covenant kind, not the Planetside 2 kind.

For Halo to translate better to other media, faceless heroes need to go out the window. Step 1, Palmer etc. /shudders, step 2 Locke. Master Chief is still a huge part of Halo but other stories need to be explored.

He's probably confused.

Locke is probably a main character in the sense that we'll be switching between him and MC throughout the game.

One mission with MC, one with Locke and so on.

we don't know why Chief is missing. There's lots of theories but nothing confirmed yet.

But was there anything after Halo 4's ending to suggest anything of the sort?

I suppose perhaps that's what a prologue is for, explaining what happened between Halo 4 and Halo 5.

Just please 343, don't put this crucial info in the TV show or hidden in terminals :(

I'm just confused in general as to what's going on in the story. What with Arbiter and stuff being involved now.

That makes two of us :p

Maybe I'm completely misremembering Halo 4's campaign, but it seems like an odd time/story jump with how H4 ended, no?

Yep, I'm just as lost.

You mean one of the biggest properties in gaming needs to get rid of the character that got it there. Hhmm...strange logic.

The story is probably from Locke's perspective.

I'm expecting a MGS2 type thing. A second-person narrative, where you view Master Chief and his actions through the eyes of a different character. The Halo series has dabbled with it before.

As for Master Chief disappearing, he's probably just directionless and drifting without ... well, you know. You get that sense from the announcement trailer, where he's draped in the shroud. He's just travelling the galaxy taking the bad shit down.

Aww yeah. I could play a whole game as Keith David. All I want in 5 is story that makes sense in game.

Unless you want to read the eventual 3 novels that will come out within 6 months of the game's actual release, chances are low.

whats with all the black poeple in yourgames tho #SJW

#NotallSpartans.

to be honest i couldnt even tell you what halo 4 was about and ive beaten it twice

Halo 4 has FF13 syndrome to a terrible "You need to buy this tome to get the FULL story" degree.

Shame, Chief should be killed off, or at least go mental and be "put down" by ONI.

I think it would be pretty powerful if 343 could properly pull it off. But I'm biased, I'm a sucker for killing off the main character mid story and having the rest of the narrative focus on the lack of the protagonists presence and how it effects people.

Latest comic spoilers...

In the latest comic they showed the Chief and Blue Team after the events of Halo 4 but before the events of Spartan Ops. They fought the Didact and the Chief "contained" (he says contained but it looked like he killed) the Didact. Afterwards it just says that he and Blue Team have just been doing one mission after enough despite Hood telling them to take a break.

Basically the Chief reassigned himself so he and Blue Team can just keep doing ops for the UNSC... It's unclear what happens from then to Halo 5.

For a better expalanation from the wiki...

John returned to Earth with Blue Team where he was debriefed by Fleet Admiral Hood. His armor was also repaired, including his broken helmet along with the prominent
gash on his chest plate. While Lord Hood believed the Didact to be dead, the Master Chief considered it safer to call him "contained". Hood ordered John and the other Spartans to take a
leave from combat, but upon his return to his team the Master Chief instead told them they were embarking on a new mission — evidently one of his own making.[11] Blue Team then
departed for their new adventure; their whereabouts in the coming months would remain classified.[67] After their departure, the Master Chief's behavior was discussed by two high-level
individuals within ONI, who deemed his self-reassignment a predictable consequence of his nature and unwavering dedication to his career.[11]

At one point after the New Phoenix Incident, John read a report concerning Thel 'Vadam, redacted by Lt. Commander Jameson Locke.

For even more explanations!

What I can imagine is that you will be playing Agent Locke in a "Spartan Ops" like side quests like in Halo 4. I am sure that MC will be the main character in the game.

Can Locke jump higher than Chief?

They can't kill off Chief, too much marketing at stake unless they retire the main series after 5. Nobody is going to give a shit about another dude in a spartan suit if it isn't Chief.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Is Master Chief himself not black?

I always pictured him taking off the helmet and it being Denzel.

Microsoft would never allow it. Apparently they got all pissy at Bungie for leaving him out of Reach.

So as I said a while back this is effectively like Halo 2 switching between Chief and Arbiter.

It CAN work if done well. Id rather a 50/50 split or 60/40 chief though.

Yes, because after all the events of Halo 4, that's exactly what I want: To play as some random Spartan and not the Chief.

What are 343 doing with the series? Is Halo 6 going to be a RTS or something?

Halo Wars 2 confirmed

I'm fine playing as whatever character as long as they are an actual CHARACTER and has an actual, tangible, character role in the story.

For as simple and faceless as Master Chief is, he's at least way more of a character and is more of an active participant in the story than the passive blank-slates you play as in ODST or Reach.
