Blizzard: World of Warcraft up to 7.4 million subscribers this quarter

600K in one quarter sounds like a pretty big swing. Why so volatile?

There was basically no content for like 15 months before this at the end of the last expansion, now a new expansion is imminent.

All those people who let their subs lapse are coming back to check out the XPAC.

a pokemon MMO would totes kill WoW

come on Nintendo

There are many, many things Nintendo does well.

Running online systems isn't one of them. :p

Real social interaction? Actual grind for gear? Epics tbat were actually epics?

Vanilla WoW blew my mind like no other game has before, BC was good, but i felt like some of the charm was lost, and finally quit before WoTLK was released.

While Looking For Raid was the worst decision ever, the game otherwise is so much better. Quests are more fun, every spec is at least relevant, and they tell the story wayyyy better than before.

Sure old raids were far more epic and rewarding (thinking back to some of the old fights, they were pretty insane) but the game just plays so much better now.

Still nowhere as good as Vanilla WoW.

Miss those days.

I had some similar feelings to this once. I didn't necessarily think it was better, but I remembered some things with thick nostalgia goggles.

Then I downloaded a 1.12 build during Cata and played on a private server. For about 30 minutes before I realized this shit was beyond awful now.

No doubt there's way too much nostalgia. Hey guys, let's stack fire and nature resist for a few fights. Wasn't that long ago we were stacking shadow resist gear too.

I've tried numerous MMO over the years (FFXI, XIV, GW, a bunch of free to play) but none of them were entertaining for very long, I usually played about 20-40 hours then quit. I've never tried WoW tho, tempted to give it a try

It might be tough to start fresh now without the ton of newbies also leveling around you, as for as finding groups and all that.

there was a lot wrong with classic WoW but it got a lot right too. people just tend to gloss over what it got wrong.

What it got wrong overshadowed what it got right. Honestly WoW was pretty much broken until WotLK. The game was terribly balanced for a long time.

Saw tons of people playing yesterday. High population PvE servers like Thrall are packed in the main cities even in the later hours right now.

I'm really liking the gameplay changes so far and how active suddenly the big cities and tradechat is now. I just hope Blizzard has a way figured out to prevent another drought like with Siege of Orgrimmar from happening or I am afraid those subs will be mostly gone again by the beginning of 2015.

They need a better content strategy so that they dont have this huge gaps.

What was it competing with at the time? The shining beacons of "balance" of Everquest and DAoC?

I tried it on test server but was not really impressed by the new animations and I doubt I'll be playing WoD but good on those numbers. Interesting..

I still feel like WoW is unhealthy for the MMO market in that its saturation stops progressions, but I'm slowly being proven wrong on that with MMO's coming out recently that have tried to do new things and have succeeded in some form.

Good on Blizzard though. For a near 10-year old game it is starting to age but at the same time it probably is the best time to jump in.

It wasn't WoW itself that was unhealthy, it was what WoW's success did to publisher expectations. No longer could the super success story of the 450,000 subscriber game Everquest be considered a success. MMO's that reached those sub numbers after WoW were seen as a failure, even though that number was considered a huge success prior to WoW. WoW just did what WoW did, you can't blame them for publisher expectations going off the deep end. Blame those publishers.

Biggest mmo for 10 years and not slowing down sure sometimes it takes a nose dive in subs but the new patch and expansion on the horizon will bring new and old players back. Today EU can play patch 6.0 i am going to enjoy it for sure.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Dat 6.0 thirst doe!

I know for a fact I'm coming back after having avoided MoP.

MoP was great one of the better expansions i played after Wotlk it was fun a lot.
I mostly avoided it because I thought the various other MMOs coming out between its start and end would be enough. I tried to get into something my IRL friends were also into, but they can never stick to a single game for all that long, and none of them will give WoW a shot. So this expansion I'm avoiding trying to follow them around, and just sticking to what I know I love.

As someone who's been playing for a straight decade, vanilla WoW was fucking terrible. Grinding out stupid Nature Resistance for Huhu. Oh hey don't have Onxyia scale cloak, guess I'm dying to Nefarian free. It's the 15th straight Molten Core run and Giantstalker still hasn't dropped, look at all this healing plate that only one guy can use!

Seriously, fuck vanilla WoW.

You don't need to group up. Also pick a gathering progression like mining and get loads of money quickly as process are high, making it easy to buy a mount and so on

Vanilla wow was my greatest gaming experience EVAR.

....I liked grinding out nature resistance for Ahn'Qiraj =(

Best part of AQ was all the odd and interesting adventures or efforts like the world PvP war over silithid farming tunnels; the war effort to farm bandages, ore, and the whole organization of farming teams and locations for said resources; the race to complete the scepter quest (24/7 world PvP trying to control flight masters and dragons to slow rivals), the exploration into AQ for the first time (probably the most ominous zone to explore that has ever been added to WoW though EPL was pretty intense too in beta when it was sort of off limits)... even having to farm odd and interesting items (like Maraudon lol) for nature gear... I dunno I like that stuff

WoW's bosses and dungeons are better than ever but all the supporting mechanics are so streamlined now, from travel to porting to socialization... I've never liked so much streamlining. But hey, I also loved SWG at release so... you know... niche and all.

I really want a reason to get back into WoW but I don't even have time to play what's already on my plate. I really want to. :(

I only started playing 2 years ago and when people say whole year of no new content I understand for veteran players that may be annoying but they can always un-sub and come back now.

I find there is soo much content to go through and so many things missed that maybe a lot of current subscribers have other stuff to be getting on with. Great game.

Considering that's up till September 30th, I wonder what the total will be when WoD launches how close will it get to 10m, I reckon they might fall at around 8.5m but after so many years that would be impressive. Must admit I cannot wait till November, haven't been this excited since Wotlk.

Surely this is before patch 6.0.2. Which is going to be introducing a new boom in subs over this week. Then when Warlords comes out, another, bigger boom.

I could make a pretty long list of reasons why post vanilla is better.
I see these sorts of posts a lot in regards to WoW and it usually includes the epic gear argument. I don't see why the colour of the item's name makes such a big difference. Higher ilvl is still higher ilvl regardless of what colour its name is.

I think the two games would serve different purposes and coexist happily... and those WoW players who might be interested in a light Pokemon fix are catered for.

I think Frost Resist was the last time it was expected, wasn't it? I seem to remember having some handy for Sindragosa... or was it Sapphiron? One of the two.

light I wonder if they will up the total of the amount of pets you can carry for WoD. Isn't it like 640 at the moment and there is 520 pets before WoD.

I love Pokemon and I agree it would be a different kind of monster to WoW but battle pets in WoW is great little addition and hope they keep adding things to it.

I think people's opinion of Vanilla WoW is *heavily* coloured by what class/spec they wished to play at the time. If you happened to be one which was ideal for endgame, you may well have had a fantastic time. If not...

You may notice that there aren't many Vanilla paladins who have great fondness for the game as it was then. And I don't think pallies are in any way the only class treated that way.

I only subbed last month for that Horde Bike, I likely won't be logging on again until Warlords is released. Good for them though, having over 7 million subs after 10 years is mad.

Dammit Blizzard I have other games to play, I need to play Bayonetta 2 and Smash. I also have friends and work. I will not return to wow this time!

Goes and buys WOD

Even though i started playing with pandaria again (cancelled my sub after clearing ICC) WoD is the first addon since Wotlk that really gets me hyped.

WoW is still the only MMO that really gets me. Had a fun time with leveling in SW:TOR but the endgame was just way too weak. Can wait to finally have something to do for my Tauren Resto Druid again - Im playing him since Vanilla as my main character and it never gets old

Will be re-subbing to play after exams are done. GW2 has sucked and underwhelmed lately so its time to try something new.

Fuck last week or so I have been reading far too much about WoW.

Levelled a char to 90 2 years ago and havent played since. Not missed it either really. But now I'm feeling dat tug...

I have so many other games to play too, just don't have the time. Please either convince me this is the game I need, or reasons that I don't want to go near it again! I'm so conflicted

Now that Titan is cancelled everyone is reluctantly re-subbing.

You really think so? We never heard anything about Titan. Never saw any footage or even any concept art. Besides a few comments from Blizzard we know literally nothing about it, so would people really lament its passing? Maybe a tiny subset of Blizzard fans would re-sub to WoW when faced with the reality of Titan being canned, but I seriously doubt it's as high as 600k.
