Let's just say that some people in the thread have certain feeling towards TA for reasons other than the site's coverage. But that's not a discussion for this thread
I'm hoping this doesn't have to do with Republique...

Personally I prefer quality over quantity. Would rather have a short well-crafted concise experince over a padded-out game with filler
I totally agree. There are so many games worth playing on iOS that I really don't want one game to demand all of my time. Unfortunately, a lot of games focus on keeping players around for an eternity. That's something I definitely don't like about F2P titles.

I hope the market gets over it's fascination of combining "X" with "Match-3" soon. I can't personally stand these games, no matter how they sugar coat it, it's still a damn match-3 game! I have Bejeweled, or Threes! for that already.

Originality is dead. :p

play monster strike imo

Also at least in Japan there seems to be a small revolution against timer games starting to happen; PAD cut its timer to 5 minutes after competitiion from other games with faster and faster timers, and the somewhat popular White Cat Project got rid of stamina timers altogether despite otherwise having the same trappings as all the other dragonesques.

Threes is match-3? I thought it was some numbers game or something. Damn. I've been missing out.

Nice.

Do behind-the-back runners / lane runners get any love here? I often try ones that look okay, and think about what I like or don't like about the slight differences. I'd like to know if anyone has favorites, or ones they thought would be good but then totally disappointed. For example, I'm still enjoying Spider-Man Unlimited, I think Agent Dash is solid, and The End App was also a lot of fun. But then there are games like Subway Surfers which I think are okay, but overly simplistic in many ways, and push IAP too heavily.

I had started typing a reply right after this post, but then got caught up with things that took me away from my computer all day. Anyway, Super Glyph Quest is easy to recommend. If you've played the first one, it's very much the same (as many "super" games are) but with a ton more content. If you haven't played the first one, it's one of my favorite games this year... though, I guess it could be replaced by the new one.

The problem I have with SGQ is that it feels really grindy at the moment. Early on, before you get to the depth that makes the game shine, the story quests are unbalanced, and you'll die unfairly a lot. What makes it more frustrating is that the levels you can repeat to grind out exp give you only a little bit each round.

The developer has been active on the TA forums, and said they were looking into some rebalancing. I have a feeling that if getting to the real meat, where you are matching different elemental glyphs in the same turn, becomes a bit easier, it could be on my GotY list.

Didn't buy it because I had my hands full with the other releases but I will after I write this. Seems complex and deeper than any other match-3 game.

What surprises me the most is that Simogo put out both Year Walk and Device 6 in the same year. They do hire outside help, but they're really only two people at their core.

If anyone is worried about playing just one of them, or in which order, just know that you can finish either one in a few hours. I played through Year Walk three times the day it came out. With Device 6, I took a couple breaks throughout the game to think about the puzzles, but I think the total play time was quite short. I ended up playing through again right after I finished the first round.

I ended picking up Year Walk. I saw it more of a game than Device 6. I never played Inkle earlier adventures like Sorcery so I saw too much text on Device 6 and freaked out xD. I am finding Year Walk a different experience than anything I ever played so far. Love the atmosphere. Seems like I am unfolding a giant puzzle.

I don't really get the TA hate here. I've always thought they put an honest effort into covering both games they are personally excited about, and games their readers want to know about. I mean, a lot of their coverage is driven by buzz on their forums.

Remember when all the Flappy Birds craze that happened a few months back which threatened serious iOS gaming? While other websites were doing articles like "Games similar to but better" and stuff like that, when we all were sick of that you know what TouchArcade did? A clone of a clone. They released a clone of Flappy Birds. And thats not the worst part, as they made it as freemium as they can get with a lame excuse that was a "meta-game" (their editor in chief is the lamest of them all, calling the grind "a fun meta-game"). I bet if AppSpy or other trustful websites did a game they would stay away from making a freemium clone. They didnt do much to try to stop it, they encouraged the Flappy Birds craze, their editor just wanted traffic to that site. People got angry about that and his reply was something like this: "Its increases traffic and traffic gives us money".That proved that there is no gaming heart there at all. Just fame, money and getting games early to play them early. So, yes, I dont like that website.

I personally like Puzzle and Dragons.
A mix of my most hated gameplay mechanics, cards and match-3. I did try it once it finally came out in Europe, not for me.
Downloaded this last night thanks to your post - pretty damn solid game, I think I'll enjoy this for a while.

Been playing since August. I'm a shooter fan, and this and Super Crossfire are the best shooters I've experienced on iOS.
I love how the game notifies you when your highscore is beaten. I also don't mind the F2P mechanics, the upgrading bits makes the game a long term investment and makes me wanna come back to it repeatedly.

I like that you can still play while the upgrade timers are counting down. Seriously, devs, that's all you need to do. Don't lock me out of your game.

The fact that each level has like four difficulty levels adds a ton of replay value.

I see.

I think Flappy Bird was a fine game, and a lot of websites/journalists rallied behind the developer when he ended up pulling the app. In certain ways, it was almost brilliant (almost because I don't think it was entirely intentional). If not for the original, we'd never have Street Flapper, Flapthulhu, Flappybalt, or probably Zombie Gunner Arcade. And then I'd have an empty folder of games on my phone, titled "flap." I don't see how anyone can see Hodappy Bird as a serious attempt to drive traffic or make money, especially since I'd doubt any money Madgarden took from the game covered a fraction of the development costs. I always took it as self deprecating and light hearted, and therefore couldn't get upset about it.

Have you played Mr Flap?

Or Terry Cavanagh's Maverick Bird? (Flash game)

Maverick Bird is easily the best Flappy-inspired game IMO

Fair enough, Flappybalt and the Terry Cavanagh game were excellent, they are the two exceptions made by geniuses... but I thought it was very distasteful to gamers and gaming in general, when things are turning the way it did with the swarm of clones and it was actually hurting real honest developers who worked their asses of, its not good to release a clone and even worse, joke about it, and even worse made a review of it, half joke half real. And I am sure they made it with the intention to make a profit. I only feel bad for Madgarden for having TWO Flappy Birds games on their back. To me it was a really disgusting thing to do. Not class or taste at all.

Yesterday I downloaded Woah Dave and sadly I have to give some warning to those interested in it... it has huge big enormous borders on the side making it cumbersome. They take more than half of the screen leaving the play area so small. I asked them on twitter but so far no response. Some screenshots to show this:

Don't forget to use the companion app to fully enjoy and complete the game.
And do not fear text in Device 6...text is the actual 'graphics' in the game;it's an awesome experience too.

I'm getting REALLY addicted to GEM OF WARS.

It really shows it's from the same people that did the original Puzzle Quest...it's the only game that it's giving me the same feelings during the fights.

Maverick Bird is awesome. I remember thinking it wouldn't work as well on iOS, but if it could, I'd definitely download it.

That's what I was talking about. Of course the straight up clones were a disaster and made the AppStore a nightmare, but I don't think any respectable website was covering those. After the dev for Flappy Bird pulled his game, there were tons of threats against him over it, and some game sites were ragging on the game. That's when other developers did the Flappy Game Jam to show support for how well the original actually was made. The two linked above were products of that game jam, and I want to say Flapthulhu was as well.

Honestly, if you think TA's continued mentioning of Flappy Bird was in any way disgusting, I think the true intentions just went over your head. I mean, when you can practically hear readers wringing and chewing on their hats every time Flappy Bird was mentioned (because grrr why are they even mentioning that terrible stupid waste of AppStore time and space I'm gonna hold my breath and stamp on the ground until they stop talking about it!!!), it was hard not to laugh. But if you've got a personal beef, there's no use wasting more time trying to convince you otherwise.

In other news, I loaded up the FF7 G-Bike game only to get a maintenance message. Maybe this was developed by the same team as Destiny of Spirits.

If you love that "giant puzzle feeling", you'll love Device 6

It's a text "adventure", in every sense of the word. The words twist and turn with the environment, so a long hallway means a long sentence stretching out of the screen as you hear your footsteps, or walking up steps has the words staggered up the screen. Turning a corner has you turning your device to follow the text. A radio signal grows louder as you approach a room and fades as you move away. It's a brilliant use of text unlike anything I've seen before

It's also the first game where I had to sit down with a pencil and paper to keep track of clues. You'll need a pencil and paper for Year Walk as well

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Don't miss out on Meter Maid City because it sounds stupid or looks stupid... it's a lot of fun.. and challenging.

Surprisingly deeper than you'd first think as well.. and pretty hard to manage all the things at one time... give it a shot.. no really.. try it out. It's F2P.. but I haven't ran into any paywalls yet at all.

I have that. I can see it have descriptions about a lot of things (cant go into detail as I dont know pretty much anything about the game), seems helpful.

I have to take a third look into Device 6...

...Lots of good points...

First, I would also pay to have Maverick Bird on my iPhone... that style that Cavanagh added made it glorious. I never got to play Flapthulhu, I was really sick of seeing that swarm invading so I just shut that door. I was pretty much baffled at the whole situation so I couldn't see that and it sure flew over my head. True. No humor when something you like and live in everyday turns into a nightmare. Giving it some thought I can see that now. I will just shut up about it now and never think about it or mention it ever again. I am really glad that swarm is over for good (touching wood here).

G-Bike? I need a Japanese account right now...

I really like the feeling that everything make up for a giant puzzle, and I liked that bit you told there. Taking a third look at Device 6 now... seems to be similar to their new game coming next week, with text being graphics like Pitta says. Interesting concept. Diving further into Touchgameplay videos...

What a tease. Accidental release of Phoenix 2. Got excited there for a minute. Sounds like a very unfinished build.

I know it sounds weird....but I strongly advice against any videos or more impressions about Device 6.
STOP.
If you are intrigued, or you like Year Walk (just enjoy it...it's a 4-5 hours affair)...just get Device 6.
The less you know before hand, the more you will enjoy imho.
If you find it utter crap, I'll offer you an italian coffee and a croissant next time we meet :p

Yeah, the less you know, the better the experience is. Just trust me on this. I was very hesitant to get Device 6 but when I finally did get it, I knew I should have gotten it the day it released.

Do not expect Icewind Dale EE anytime soon.
The game will be out today everywhere BUT Apple Store...they resubmitted the build (rejected due to file size, LOL).

TouchArcade is not a bad place if you know how to handle expectations. You' ve got three layers :
Shaun Musgrave
not Shaun Musgrave
not a game journalist
Once you adopt this reading grid the site becomes infinitely better

That 2GB limit really needs to be history now that we have 128GB devices... how are we ever going to get console ports that are 30GBs+ on iOS with a 2GB limit! :)

Ah, is Simogo's new game in the same style as DEVICE 6? I actually preferred its structure compared to Year Walk. I'd be happy with a new one every year, even.

These guys do not have a great track record with App Store submissions... Needless to say I am excited for Icewind Dale!

LOL. That's a pretty accurate summary as far as the writing side.

Just to kind of help, it isn't just the Hodappy Bird and F2P opinions that soured some of us on TA.

There's a LOT of ugly behind the scenes stuff that has and probably continues to go on there with the staff and the way forum members have been treated.

But I'm not going to get into that. It's something I've just learned to let go even if it taints my opinon on the site.

There are some great forum members there and some that are no longer there. I'll leave it at that.

Just didn't want folks to think that it's just something trivial like Hodappy Bird that has affected TA.
