Uplay is still a thing? Fuck, I was looking forward to R6:S and The Division...
I don't see the difference this makes considering you have to go through uplay for all ubi titles anyway?
Unless that's changed recently?
Well, now that Ubisoft has confirmed the games won't be coming to Steam in the UK.
They have certainly lost all sale from me.
Also for people saying UPlay client is garbage i must disagree. I am using Steam, GOG, Origin, Battle.net and UPlay because i don't have issue using multiple client if i can get games cheaper.
That is fine until those services are taken down. UPlay would be well and truly at the top of that list, which is why I avoid it.
I wouldn't have minded not being able to buy a game on Steam, if Ubisofts alternative wasn't uPlay only. GOG.com, Origin, anything but uPlay.
If that happens games will be patched for sure.
Source on that?
This must have been quite a recent thing because I swear I saw Far Cry 4 on the Steam homepage for pre-purchase in the UK.
We've been in discussions with Valve about Assassin's Creed 3 and Far Cry 3, but for the time being the games are not available via Steam in the UK," said Ubisoft.
"In the meantime, UK customers wishing to purchase either of these games can do so by visiting the Uplay store, our retail partners or other digital distributors."
They went on to assure overseas gamers, "Assassin's Creed 3 and Far Cry 3 are available on Steam in other regions outside the UK."
Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. Publishers have complete control over what they can release on Steam. Who is Ubi trying to fool here?“We’ve been in discussions with Valve about Assassin’s Creed Unity but for the time being the game is not available via Steam in the UK,” Ubisoft told PCGamesN.
Can you write why? What is your problem with UPlay? You have right to make your choices but i am curious why do you think UPlay is not for you?
Or a UK retailer cut a deal to keep the games off Steam for a limited time (unlikely as very few retailers care about PC games, but it did happen in the past with THQ UK)
ohh the irony
Unity is £18.35 at Indian Origin
This is on the Indian version of Origin store. What you need to do is;
1. Make sure a debit/credit card is saved to your origin account. This makes payment easier.
2. Install the Hola plugin for your browser and set it to India. Details can be found on the Hola site.
3. Go to the origin store and you'll know wether Hola has worked or not because all prices will be in Rupees. 1p is approximately 1 rupee.
4. Add AC Unity to your cart and click checkout.
5. Disable Hola now and make sure you're back on your UK ip. This will allow you to process your UK card. Proceed with the payment.
does it give you a steam key or uplay key or you just play it from origin?
They may go the EA route makes sense you don'tI don't think Steam dictates pricing. I imagine Ubisoft just doesn't want Steam taking a cut of their income. They think they can sell enough on uPlay to make up for whatever sales loss they get by not selling on Steam.
We'll see.
Doesn't bother me, if they are on Steam they'd still use the Uplay launcher just the same (at least my copy of FC3 BD does) - i wouldn't buy a new game on Steam just as much as I wouldn't buy a new game on Uplay. if i buy any of these games I'd buy them from a cheaper place (as i always do), and I would still have to use Uplay all the same.
Now if the Steam version didn't require Uplay 'd look at this differently, as Steam is way better than Uplay, but seeing as the Steam version still requires Uplay it just doesn't matter to me.
Wouldn't the game require UPlay even if you bought it from Steam? At least that's how AC2 worked
So not much loss, really?
As for Ubisoft, it's insulting when a company tries to pull the wool over our eyes, why not just say it how it is "We don't feel Steam offers us the right value" or something, aka "we don't want Valve taking a cut of our games".
It's been like this for a few months, why are people only just noticing now?
Also for people saying UPlay client is garbage i must disagree. I am using Steam, GOG, Origin, Battle.net and UPlay because i don't have issue using multiple client if i can get games cheaper.
Since 4.0 update UPlay Client is just fine. They are adding more and more features and trying to make Client less annoying for Steam users. Since ACIV their new games are using same update system as Steam/Origin so no more annoying updates, newest Client update is updating in background, You can always use offline saves and now Client will ask you which save you want to use is offline and online save doesn't match. Client supports Voice Chat now and capturing screenshots, new Uplay page and ubisoft web page now support Chat after login etc. They are not perfect but they are trying to improve their service.
Quality of Life in UK unexpectedly rises.
If i buy the game in origin, do I still have to use uplay?
It's not that it's back, by the way. It never stopped. It's just THQ went under and it only happens with ubisoft stuff now which is a bit less noticeable.Bethesda games including Skyrim were also cock-blocked from sale on Steam but only in the UK by a mysterious entity that people speculate is Game.
Let's play cui bono!
- Ubisoft aren't doing an EA to get everyone buying from UPlay instead of Origin.
Why?
This is only in the UK. So its pressure from someone in the UK and only affecting the UK.
- Valve aren't blocking Ubisofts sale
Why?
Again, this is in the UK only. So the reasons above.
- A UK entity with power over publishers has compelled Ubisoft
Why?
This affects the UK only, so the above reasoning.
Who would have enough pressure to compel behaviour of a publisher, and is based only in the UK? A major game retailer.
- It was GAME.
Why?
a) "No smoke without fire" is a pretty shitty reason, but this has been an ongoing thing (WITH ONE IMPORTANT EXCEPTION) for years now, and Game keep having their name attached to the practice.
b) Game issued a PR about this once due to their being challenged if they had been involved in doing this in the past, and it was weasel worded with the whole "we are not currently ...." type wording.
c) That one important exception?
When Game were going bankrupt and unable to pay for their stock, this practice completely ceased.
Now Game are back as the number one gaming retailer in the UK?
Steam cock-blocking is back.
In the meantime, UK customers wishing to purchase the game digitally can do so by visiting the Uplay store, our retail partners or other digital distributors."
The issue, I suspect, is pricing. Currently, a digital version of the PC version of Assassins Creed: Unity is available online for £49.99 from both Ubisofts own store uPlay, and other independent digital retailers including GreenManGaming and Gamersgate.
I don't think Steam dictates pricing. I imagine Ubisoft just doesn't want Steam taking a cut of their income. They think they can sell enough on uPlay to make up for whatever sales loss they get by not selling on Steam.
We'll see.
