Aonuma sheds more light on Majora Mask 3D. (Fishing in 2 places, New 3DS tease, etc)

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
From Famitsu via Nintendo Everything.

In the original Majora’s Mask, the difficulty balance assumed that players had experienced Ocarina of Time before. But for the remake, new players are also being considered. Aonuma explained to Famitsu, “Specifically speaking, parts that were conventions and weren’t explained at all are changed, and challenges which you realize by repeating many times are made easier to understand.”

Rather than making the experience simpler, the changes in Majora’s Mask 3D are intended to help stumped players with hints. The three-day cycle remains the same, and the system for following other people’s actions aren’t changed. There is, however, a boss battle that is seeing changes. As a new element, players will be able to fish at two places.

Ocarina of Time 3D introduced some gyro controls. These are returning in the Majora’s Mask remake. The development team is also using the know-how from A Link Between Worlds to make more pleasant touch controls.

Before Majora’s Mask 3D was announced, some speculated that the game could end up as a New 3DS exclusive. We now know for sure following last week’s announcement that this isn’t so. Aonuma does comment on the new handheld and notes that the visuals are the same when played on the original 3DS or New 3DS. He leaves the following mysterious tease though: “Please wait for the opportunity to discuss how playing on the New 3DS differs at a later date.”

I'd hope most new release include some *new* 3DS features. Maybe it's amiibo or C-Stick support. I'd like extra AA or for it to run at a higher frame rate if that's possible (very unlikely though)
Did the original have any fishing spots? I do not remember that at all
Guessing that playing on New 3DS gets you a higher framerate. The trailer had a 60fps option...
which one?

Doesn't sound like anything major. People who hated the N64 one will probably hate this one too.

The opinion's of game's can change over time. I didn't really enjoy MM that much back in the day because of the whole time limit thing. I replayed it a few years ago and enjoyed the game very much.

Don't go changing, to try and please me. You never let me down before

Seriously though, fishing sounds nice, though with the time limit, I can't imagine myself doing it much.

I really can't imagine the new 3DS will be improved enough to get an fps boost from 30 > 60. That'd be a much higher boost to the hardware than I'd be expecting. Unless the current 3DS can actually run it at about 50fps, and they're just keeping it locked at 30fps to stop stutter.

Some ideas for possible changes in line with what Aonuma described:

- At the beginning of the game, Link chases Skull Kid through the Lost Woods. Turn this into a quick tutorial, similar to the Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time. They could accomplish this by turning the chase into an obstacle course, where you learn basic maneuvers to make it from Point A to Point B. The game is not on a timer at this point, so it's a good place to learn, even if the chase adds urgency.

- Once in Clock Town, add unmissable cutscenes where NPCs underscore key details. They could point you to the Scarecrow in West Clock Town, so you learn how to use the Inverted Song of Time. They could clearly explain how the game is played: Make a bit of progress, acquire a new item or reach a new warp point, and then reset time and make more progress from there.

- Make it so you keep ALL of your items when you travel back in time, including disposable items like bombs and arrows. The bank would simply become a way to exceed the capacity of your wallet. The Trading Post would still be good for when you want to replenish disposable items but don't wan to bother cutting grass in Termina Field.

- Simplify saving by making owl statues the only way to save, similar to ALBW and SS. This works better for a pick-up-and-play portable title. You also don't need to explain two forms of saving like in the original.

I wonder if they will fix the targeting on the twinmold fight.

Im currently doing a reverse boss order run of majora's mask and the twinmold fight is fucking hard with the basic magic amount and trying to hit fire and light arrows. Locking on to the boss never works.

By touch controls they mean inventory right

Probably, yeah. Aonuma has said that the drag-and-drop inventory from LBW was dropped from OOT3D because it wasn't responsive enough at 30FPS, which makes me think they may at least have the bottom screen running at 60FPS.

(Is it difficult to get both screens running at different refresh rates? I haven't ever thought about it before.)

Literally the only thing on my wishlist is a better save system. Everything else is frosting on the glorious Majora's Mask cake.

I think ideally they let you do a quick save/suspend point at any location and make Owl Statues into permanent save spots alongside going back to the first day.

Yeah, that footage definitely looks 60fps-y...would that make it the first 3D Zelda to run at 60fps?
ALBW is a locked 60 fps in full stereoscopic 3D.

Unless you mean "3D gameplay" 3D. In which case, I think so.

I'm skeptical they'd go through the trouble, though. They'd have to change all of the animations.

They didn't update the animation when going from OoT 64 to 3D ...but it's been in the works since that came out so who knows

Possible fishing spots:

- Tingle's dad runs a shooting gallery in the Southern Swamp. Maybe they can expand that to include a fishing pond?

- The Beaver Bros. have the extensive River Rapids near Great Bay Coast. Maybe add a fishing pond up there?

- Ice-fishing could be neat in the mountains... Or maybe you can fish in the pond where the frogs gather during spring?

- Romani Ranch has several attractions, like the chicks and the dog races. Maybe a fishing pond could be a new one?

Of course, they could add a fishing pond to Clock Town. If the town is seamlessly connected now, with expanded passages between each area, maybe a fishing pond could be added there.

They'll probably add one in Ikana Valley because I didn't guess it

Aww man. It sounds like the beginning of the game is going to get more boring.

You don't need to play Ocarina of Time to figure this game out. Any 3D Modern Zelda plays like Ocarina. Lock-on, auto jump, the whole nine yards.

Do newbies really need things not taught in the original MM explained here? I guess they're worried some new folks might fail the first three days and have to do all that again.

There is, however, a boss battle that is seeing changes.

Make the cool boss in the forest temple much harder, and he'd fit right in as a Dark Souls boss.

But I fear their going to give him a puzzle gimmick and destroy what I liked about that fight.

I hope I'm just paranoid.

The boss being changed is probably Gyorg. I've beat MM countless times and I still can't quite remember how that fight progresses, lol. And they probably added that eye to his mouth for a reason.

Oh man, ice fishing would be fantastic.

I feel that accommodating the people who hated the original game would mean fundamentally changing what Majora's Mask is.

Untimeddungeons. Untimeddungeons. Untimeddungeons. Untimeddungeons. Untimeddungeons. PleeeeaaaaseUntimeddungeons.

Adding not one, but TWO fishing spots, is an encouraging sign that they're adding even more things to do. MM is already full of neat NPCs, fun quests, etc. It's the most replayable 3D Zelda for this reason, imo. Adding fishing and who knows what else, along with potential new NPCs, is quite exciting. :)

I think they're going to make that giant fish boss easier somehow, with a smaller punishment for falling in the water.

who gives a shit about fishing? I've never fished in a zelda game unless I was forced to complete it to get an item/piece of heart/what have you...

please add a remixed mode or something..
