Super Smash Bros Wii U Review Thread

Docking points from a fighting game for having light single player content is exceptionally short-sighted.
But it will happen anyway.

I'd hardly say that Smash single player content is light. The abscense of story mode doesn't mean the other modes don't count.

How many standard deviations below average will it take to make people angry?

Depends on how far below average said scores are.

A couple 8's while all are 10's would be 'eh.' Might cause a minor Twitter Tremor™.

One 5/10 while it gets 9/10's everywhere else would break the internet at a speed of ten-hundred times Kim Kardashian's ass.

I'm expecting the stage builder to be a positive considering how it uses the Wii U Gamepad. reviewers generally loved to trash year one games for not using it, I'm expecting some praise now that it's being put to good use.

inb4 "totally dull and expected gamepaf usage WHERE ARE THE NEW IDEAS NINTENDO?"

There's not a lot of single player content? :(

There's no huge story mode like Brawl had, but between Classic Mode, All-Star, Events, and Stadium games there's plenty to enjoy by yourself. Also if the online is at least equal to the 3DS version, then it's actually half-way decent unlike Brawl so that should be enjoyable if you can't get people together.

The problem with Smash Bros. is that you are either a fan of the sub-genre it created and of fighting games, or you are not. A lot of sites use reviewers by genre nowadays, but some don't. Plus there's that one website that gives everything a 6 or below.

In the case of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 I can see the point though. Once you beat the story, you only have online matches to play.
However, Smash tends to give way more content than most fighting games.
I am quite happy with the amount of SP content.
I will wait to judge online though. If it just like the 3DS version, I will be sad.

TBF the Smash series has always been one of the better single player fighting games tho

Hahah, actually there is quite a bit of single player content for sure. My point was that for the "main" single player (classic), it's pretty light (just like every other fighting game's classic mode). I agree with all of you, but I feel reviewers will basically dock points for the classic mode being too basic, i.e. not a story mode like Brawl.

Which is dumb.

EDIT: For clarity, the content in this game is massive. I hope reviewers realize this, play the modes, and keep that in mind when calling a certain mode not up to par.

So where are the reviews?
Don't they usually come out at 11:00ET?

Usually when a review thread is made there's actual reviews out there.

I'm still more hyped about PM 3.5 on a gameplay POV, but not on a *everything else about smash POV* I'm still eager to play it. And Patch 1.0.4 was really really good.

I'm hoping my ethernet connected Wii U will provide a good online experience. I feel confident it will be better than 3DS since it only uses WiFi (though I don't have the 3DS version so I can't speak to the quality there, only what I've heard).

Hope this gets good reviews for the sake of maybe getting some additional sales, but game reviews are always a joke and regardless of the scores this gets, it will be no exception. Never understood what makes some random dude on the internet's opinion the be-all-end-all for a game's public opinion.
Back on topic, this game is going to consume my entire life.

Surprised so many people expect 90 metacritic, when, like MK, always get low 80 reviews.

Huh?

You can't have an overall positive online experience with random strangers when communication is enabled.
Mostly joking. Like 3/4.

Oh yeah I thing you're totally right, but I was thinking more about communicating with other Gaffers in the GAF Communities!

Hype ticket bought. Let's-a-goooo! I predict good scores. High scores, and the usual lower score from a random website just so it can get all the clicks.

That would be nice. :(

I can understand if voice chat is disable mid match to prevent extra lag... but it's a shame either way. Monster Hunter on Wii U had voice chat just enabled, and it was so convenient just to talk to my friends while we played.

Pre-embargo, huh?

Won't click.

Seems pretty sloppily written. Mistake in the 2nd paragraph: "I briefly lost my faith in Smash this year when Nintendo chose to release You can customize Amiibo versions of these characters, too.)"

Does it seem like I’m emphasizing this “TV” thing a lot?

No, you only mentioned it once...

Paste Games - 8.5

I have no idea who Paste Games is.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U feels like a version of Smash that has achieved a higher plane of self-awareness. This game has leaned even further into its own wackiness, and it’s up to you whether you want to come along for the ride. Heck, this game will actually let you watch a game without any active players in it at all, which I’m pretty sure no prior iteration has allowed.

<_<

While I think this game will get a lot of pretty good scores (not that it matters that much to me anyways :p), I won't be surprised if it gets a lower score than both Melee and Brawl. The rift between Melee vs. Brawl may have changed how reviewers look at Smash games and what to analyze. Just a hunch.
