Best indie games of 2014?

Age Of Wonders 3
Grimrock 2
Divinity:Original Sin
Banished
This War Of Mine
Wasteland 2
(I don't think it's technically allowed, but Shadowrun: Dragonfall)

Incidentally, this list very closely resembles my general GOTY list.
Amazing taste, guess I have to check out This War Of Mine.

And yeah, the same is true for my GotY list. The only games on it I can think of off-hand which are not indie (by the broader definition) are Dark Souls 2 and Might & Magic X.

Might just be my game of the forever.

Legend of Grimrock 2 comes in a close second.

I'd say Transistor, Velocity 2X, or Towerfall: Ascension. All really fantastic games. I'm sure there are so many good ones I never played, but I played a lot and those are my favorite.

My Top 5:

Transistor (overall goty, not just indie)
Towerfall Ascension
Nidhogg
Velocity 2X
Pix the Cat

Octodad gets a honorable mention. Haven't played Shovel Knight yet.

Shovel Knight easily.

I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it. It's a perfect blend of old school and modern mechanics.

The total lack of Van Helsing II love makes me sad. Such a great game and so unknown still.

Divinity: OS, and AoW III are also amazing.

Of the indies that I've played, my favorites this year are:

Super Time Force
Defense Grid 2

I also just got Thomas Was Alone (released 11/21/14 on XB1) last week, and am really liking it after an hour or so.

I'd definitely like to get my hands on Transistor at some point.

I really liked A Bird Story when I played it earlier this month and it might be my favourite indie game this year but besides those it would be:

  • 1001 Spikes
  • Luftrausers
  • The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
  • Pix the Cat

I always forget that Original Sin is an indie title. It's that and Rebirth. Shovel Knight was great, but has absolutely nothing on Rebirth's replay value.

Divinity Original Sin or Age of Wonders III, both are fantastic games.

Contenders are Banished, This War of Mine and Endless Legend.

Divinity OS is possibly the best game I've played this year.

Other than that, I loved Grimrock 2 and Nidhogg. Shovel Knight was fun too.

I completely forgot that Hexcells Plus came out this year. That's my number 2 behind Lethal League.

I haven't played Shovel Knight but I'm pretty sure it's Shovel Knight.

I played it, I didn't think it was good. I would give it like a 7/10.

I had fun with Banished. I would give it an 8/10 just because it was good for a one man show. I wish it had more of an end game though. The first 3 years were great though.

Divinity: Origin Sin has probably the best combat in a cRPG. I do think it loses some steam after the first area though.

Wasteland 2 didn't do anything new but was still fun.

This War of Mine is a really nicely designed game. It is kind of like Faster Than Light where once you beat it you get a new characters/scenarios.

Divinity:OS (also overall goty)
Banished
Endless legend
Grimrock 2
Age of wonders 3
Insurgency
Volgarr

Definitely a truly great year, and I still have Isaac Rebirth and This war of mine to play

Two free games from the website itch.io I love.

Glitchikers and Morning Coffee.

They are really short and really amazing, pieces of art, one of the two most eye opening games I've ever played.

Ex-aequo and possibly my front-runners for GOTY, and most of all from the same studio: Endless Legend and Dungeon of the Endless.
