Yeah it was pretty good. Important to point out that it is still going to be one Universe that everyone shares, which I assume means basically everyone is on the same servers with same formulas and stuff - so randomisation of those still allows for ridiculous variation but the possibility to find what others have found

I like that though. So if you find an amazing part of a planet with crazy fauna, you can say to people "go to this planet and these co-ordinates" and they'll see it themselves.

So my mind is officially blown after watching the 30 minute interview with Hello Games' Sean Murray on No Man's Sky. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...te-behind-the-scenes-tour-of-no-mans-sky.aspx

The entire video Sean was saying that any input to the generation function would always yield the same output, but the literal explanation of that didn't dawn on me until he used a Sine Function to explain himself. That is why they do not have to store any information about their procedurally generated universe, when two different people observe the same planet, it will always be the same thing, but it also hasn't been generated until they actually visit.

This formula that generates planets also generates creatures, enemies, ships, and other NPCs around the galaxy. They design and animate a base model, then generate an infinite amount of creatures from that model.

This game is the real deal.
You know, Elite did basically the same thing in 1984 :p
Not to the same level of sophistication/detail obviously, but enough to drive home the utility of pseudo-random number generators.

I'll judge the quality of their procedural generated content when the game is out. I can't help but think of Spore whenever I read or see something about the game.
Spore's touted species creation did actually pan out, though. It was everything else about the game that sucked.

Awards page is nice, would be nice if there was a count down for when the event starts, Not all Steam users know what PST is. Additionally having games that aren't available to pre-order is a bit silly. I suppose it's a "look how relevant PC is at this awards show" kinda page.

I haven't followed the new Elite, but are they doing anything similar this time round?

hmmm ... looks like Shadownet and Ozium got banned

Who snitched?

Following an unsuccessful game of Remote Desktop Basketball, I'll just say that Family Sharing supports third-party games by default and that the onus is on the library owner to make sure their affairs are in order (i.e. keys are used).

Remote Desktop Basketball? What in the hell are you silly Australians doing now?

So apparently I can only see 5 games on the Steam VGA page because I had the ES "hide search results you own" box checked on my last search.

Sure. David Braben even gave a TED talk about it. Find it here.

Awesome I'm gonna watch that in a bit. I really wish I didn't follow the Neuroscience route and instead took the opportunity to go into something like astrophysics. I read more about it than I do my own field. Probably why I'm still unemployed >.<

Elite on the Acorn Electron was mind blowing at the time. Alright they cheated a little but every system based on procedural geneneration has it's limits before repetition sets in. Even if only one factor repeats a couple of times. NPC's in open world games usually have a set amount of variations before they start repeating. If not the whole character the a combination of components. I wonder what the limits and time frame before No Mans Sky starts to show signs of repetition (it will eventually even if small components at first).

Also is Jase talking to himself?

bad rats 2

what have I done to deserve this?

Hype for No Man's Sky though

Still too much talk about procedurally generated universes, and not enough talk about what you will actually do there for my taste. I guess we are finally starting to get some info about the gameplay at least.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Did what it advertised

I don't know if my brain can take this much explosion.

I was going to say you were 30 years behind the times, but Durante, being the magnificent cunt that he is

beat me to it. You should really watch Braben TEDx talk though, it's quite nice.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.

Haha, the plan was to post in no uncertain terms how Steam handles third-party DRM via Family Sharing, but, well, I gave up.

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 916
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 764

Yes, that's right, I can upload at a greater speed than I can download. Thanks, Telstra.

That's the only thing that worries me as well.

to be fair, this interview was BTS, and focused on the tech. no doubt we will see gameplay stuff further along during this month

If my memory is correct, I think they have copy pasta'd the page from last year but replaced the background image. A timer would obviously make sense for a stream. In fact, I thought they might have tried something with steam broadcasting and Steam Chat. Guess not for now

After 4 hours of Arkham Asylum, I can say that while its a great game, City has it beat everywhere. Especially in the menu department lol.

But I am enjoying it a lot.

Did all those gifts of Bad Rats just funded Bad Rats 2? I always wanted to see their sales numbers during Sale time.

Also, anyone going to watch live the Game Awards? I just drank tea but I might switch to coffee in order to stay up!

One day, there's going to be an article where they interview the creator of Bad Rats and the title will be « I created one of the worst game ever and it made me a millionaire »

Most likely.

I'm probably not, been having some awful issue trying to sleep so I'll hopefully be sleeping. If I'm awake I'll check it out though,

I am offline one day and shit goes down up, down and sideways.

-Shadow and Ozi banned. Talked to both. Shame. Weird that it happened much later when things cooled down though >_>

-SFV exclusive for PS4 and PC. Super werid in all ways. Hate bought exclusivity. Only hurts people. At first those who don't own a specific platform. But there's more. I fear that stuff like this perpetually brings more and more exclusivity "deals". As one company feels the need to pamper its owners for having stuff only for their own too. And what's a faster way than outright buying? Whether timed or full. Investing in first-party studios is such a hassle after all. -_-

-There's a Sony event going on today? Where dem links and at what time?

-There's a game award show today too? And it's advertised on steam. Does this mean steam will stream the event? Also, when is it starting?

-Almost forgot. Bad Rats 2?! Damn. Hope it's cheap from the get-go. Ain't gonna pay big bucks just for laughs.

Anyway. Catching up with +20 pages. Prepare for wall of quotes and texts.

i was expecting to add #1 entry to my 2015 game wishlist tonight but then we were notified that Fallout 4 won't be announced today.

All hope was lost, but then the surprise Bad Rats 2 announcement happened. The whole industry was stunned and shocked, and I got my new #1 game. Now to finish the original Bad Rats, I got pretty far already..
