Was that the greatest troll in the history of the industry? (FFVII)

I wonder if SE is aware of the rightful backlash and upset fans here, or if they're super insularly and cluelessly just trucking along planning more Lightning games for the next ten years.

They royally fucked up. I wish flicking tomatoes on stage was still a thing.

Yes... Yes it was...

And I don't think I've ever got so many chills, and dropped to so much disappointment right after

Remenber that time when everyone got excited about playing a game starring one character and instead it turns out the game is completely different and you play as a pretty boy.
Please the FF7 troll is kid's stuff compared to the shit Kojima pulled.

I didn't watch it live so at first I thought "the FF fan base did it to themselves.. There never has been an announcement of an FFVII remake... SE should be allowed to announce their damn port without people melting down".

But then I watched HOW they announced it. Dude... You can not announce a port like that. You cannot put a slide like that dramatically up on screen and crow like you've gotten something new and amazing. That was the definition of "it's fucking nothing".

It reminds me of the Vib Ribbon gaffe last E3 x10000

Exactly, all the people saying that FFVII fans did this to themselves is total bullshit if you watch the announcement in the context it was presented in. That smug motherfucker walked up there acting like he was about to usher in the second coming of Jesus, got the crowd absolutely giddy with hype, and only then did he take a massive shit on them.

Emos...haven't heard that word since like 2005.

Whatever you want to call their style he is right. Pretty boy emo/gackt weaklings is the S/E version of the bald space marine. It appealed to a certain personality type and culture but looks odd to everyone else and has grown cliche and stereotypical.

Now in a few years they can be all "Well the 5th rerelease of FF7 didn't sell that well so we determined there was no interest for a remake anyway"

I was just thinking this. It'd be classic SE to "learn" all the wrong "lessons" from their insanely stupid decisions.

SE makes games firstly for a Japanese audience. Take a stroll through shibuya, Tokyo on a Saturday night and many of the young people will have this look, albeit minus the Nomura zippers and hair that isn't quite so extravagant.

I didn't assume it because I am not crazy and I know that SE has struggled with development, that the bulk of their staff are tied up in the existing white whale projects they've been chasing for a decade, and that they weren't magically going to have 300+ people working in secret on a fan fever dream rather than a new product.

When the logo came up, my immediate reaction was "oh, FF7 PSX playable on PS4. Wonder if they're using Gaikai or they've got the emulator running? Wouldn't streaming like 5 minutes of the game actually be more bandwidth than just downloading it?" The fact that it's an actual port was a pleasant surprise, honestly.

HD remakes are pretty common now, so when the FFVII logo came up I thought of a few possibilities including HD remake. Didn't even think of PC port until I read someone else's comment.

I agree that fans often troll themselves with crazy hype dreams, but in this case, I feel like FFVII HD is not even that crazy of an idea. It would be a lot more work than DQVII HD, FFX/X-2 HD, KH1.5 or KH2.5, but it's plausible, if only Square-Enix were more competently managed. Sigh. Stuff like Metroid Dread and Half-Life 3 are what I'd call crazy.

Yessssss, it was fucking excellent. Square can't make good games anymore, but they can still devastate people emotionally.

Note: I love FFVII (top 5 ever for me), but I don't really care if there's a remake.
Same exact sentiments. That 500+ page hype thread was so silly, and it's obvious SE doesn't have the resources to produce both FFXV, and a full remake of FFVII, which would be a massive production.

This right here…I saw the FFVII logo and couldn't believe it…I kept waiting for the PS1 footage to morph into PS4 remake footage…and it just…never…happened :'(

PS4 doesn't need a remake. It needs a retranslation and some remastering, but I think a remake would be a disaster, especially wit S-E's current level of competency.

Hook me up with an HD remaster of FF7 with high-res backgrounds, high poly character models, new texture assets, with some bug fixing and a new translation. That'll move it from dated to timeless.

I don't see why people thought it was a remake to begin with, Hashimoto was up there talking about 20 years with Playstation and that 17 years ago, they release FF VII. He didm't say anything about a remake, and right as the trailer started, it showed the PS1 graphics.

Now, whether it was worth the time to have him up there to hype a PC port to the PS4 is a different issue.

That's it right there. Gimme.

LOL, this was gold! I mean, I thought FF7 was a good game and am neutral on a remake. But, the build up and Hashimoto seemingly giving the body language and tone that he was announcing something on an epic scale...this was a classic moment in the gaming industry lol.

I still can't believe they did it like that. It's fucking hilarious but most PR people would have vetoed it instantly.

Square at Sony conferences is just legendary. You forgot about the amazing pre-TGS Sony event. Every insider was saying "something big is coming from Square", Sony saved the SE announcement for the very end of the show, we see HD Dragon Quest for the first time... And then it's a Dynasty Warriors spinoff. They are legend.

Yeah, Square is getting better at this , i still remember the Mana mobile game announcement , so many tears were shed.

I must admit I'm pretty let down by all of this.

I don't think this was a deliberate troll though. This is just another case of Square being insulated.

GAF never learns.

FF7Remake was never on the table. However, how SE presented that was super unfortunate. I guarantee you they had no idea about GAFs ridiculous "hype", nor is it reasonable to think they'd know. Still, someone like Boyes probably should have alerted them.

It was pretty hilarious.

I think they know people are expecting FF VII being remade sometime soon. You're just being a contrarian.

It's almost like they are trying to train us to just ignore sections of conferences when that guy comes on stage. Everytime it's disappointment. "please be excited" and now this?
