Was that the greatest troll in the history of the industry? (FFVII)

I can't recall seeing an actual troll appearing on stage like that before. Now that some time has passed, I have to say this was superb.

Who knew that 'please be excited' would lead to this?

I'm laughing on the outside now but when it's quiet I can hear myself crying inside at the same time.

Absolutely stunning move.

I honestly don't understand Square-Enix. I thought the consensus was clear, folks want a remake of FFVII not a port. You figure this would be relatively easy money for them with minimal risk.

So is literally the only difference between the PS1 version and this framerate and res? Because there is no hidden detail in those unshaded polygons like an uprezzed DS game.

Oh all the games that need a remaster this was not one of them. Untextured polygons are unshaded polygons no matter which way you cut it.

If it was a troll, who was doing the trolling? Certainly not Square Enix, who have done nothing to cultivate the expectations for a remake. Fans trolled themselves, another one of the ten thousand dumb collective hype train delusions they've been prey to.

I think for most watching if they expected a remaster/remake it was only because for a couple seconds Square telegraphed that that's EXACTLY what they were about to announce. If he had come out and said "happy birthday Playstation. Here's a new FFXV trailer. We love working with Sony, and by the way since one of the defining ps moments was ff7, were gonna port the PC version to ps4", we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I didnt watch this, but from the sound of it, wow. Seems like Square is very much out of touch... and Sony as well apparently. Personally I feel most of this rage should be directed at Sony. They should've realized how badly the FF fanbase craved for a FFVII remake. And thus tell Square not to go forward with such a high profile announcement for this. Why did they let this happen? I guess Square should've realized this too. But, in Square's mind, maybe a simple port is a remake...

Nah probably not.

I didn't see the stream but I was reading posts and people were typing shit such as "FF7!!!" and I was just thinking it was a port and then somebody else typed "FF7 remake!!" and the first thought that popped in my head "that sounds like more trouble than it's worth". I never saw the words ff7 and just leapt to some conclusion about a remake
anyhoo, the point is anybody I find who automatically jumped to the conclusion it was a remake right away and then got angry to be really really silly, and kind of embarrassing

At this point any time I see SE in a conference I assume they will disappoint in the worst way possible.

Please be excited. Reusing years old tech demos. Cgi trailers of anticipated titles and not a single piece of news afterwards. Intentionally deceptive language regarding tomb raider exclusivity. Leading people on with FFVII.

What have they done to deserve the respect and time slots for keynote presentations? seems like a track record of controversy, disappointment and failure.

I think Nintendo's way of buying out Fatal Frame and then blocking the whole franchise from non Japanese gamers is the greatest troll of all time.

You can't beat that.

Even though I think SE (and everyone else, really) should focus on making new things, not waste talent and money on rehashing old things (and I say that despite being a huge VII fan), I have to say this was probably the most excruciating live game announcement I have seen in my entire life.

Not only was the setup followed by the actual announcement utterly painful due to the simple fact of what was being announced vs. the setup; but they guy's demeanor and delivery were as if he was parodying himself. I mean he was actually acting as if people were supposed to be excited about this... and he was doing this for several excruciating minutes (or at least it seemed like it) AFTER delivering the actual killing blow of information.

It was completely fucking insane. I don't understand what kind of an alternate reality these SE guys must have constructed for themselves, if they think this was going to go over well. Seriously. What the hell?

I've actually noticed this about a handful of Japanese game developer public faces. I also get this inexplicable "what reality is this guy actually in?" vibe from the Polyphony Digital head, Kaz Yamauchi , for example. I'll read some interview and actually wonder -- how sheltered is his professional life?

What makes it funny is how enthusiastic his voice is. Xd

Indeed. Just really bizarre. I would love to the media to ask that guy a few questions on this topic... and if they can't get to him at least ask Boyes/whomever why they thought allowing this was a good idea.

Quick question, does this game at least have trophies? I have not played.it since release and would buy it just for trophies.

Ehh, probably. The Steam version has achievements.

I mean, for someone who hasn't played VII, assuming they put in the PS1 version's sounds, this would actually be a good buy. Great game that holds up well; the PC version had fixed localization over the PS1 version; slightly nicer visuals (I guess). Tucked away in some montage or something, this would have been a decent announcement.

But presented the way it was... my god. Amazing.

Sadly as sounds, I'm pretty sure Square realizes they couldn't possibly release a FF7 remake that'd be up to snuff. They'd have to cast off a generation of mediocrity and overcome unrealistic expectations from the fans for it to be considered a success. Even then it's their ace-in-the-hole they're not going to use it unless shit looks really really bad for them.

I don't blame Square for making a port and not a remake. A remake is like moving a mountain, a port is like kicking a stone. One really has no bearing on the other.

It's the way the port was announced that was the problem. Hyping up a port with that fanfare was ridiculous.

The problem is not that they didn't give the world a nearly-impossible remake. And it's not that kept their back catalog alive with ports as they always do (and should do).

Just curious. Do the FFVII mega fans want a remake or a reskin?

I think the general consensus is pretty much

-Upgraded graphics
-Redone translation

That's it. I wouldn't be opposed to additional content outside of the story myself. I don't think I could trust current SE to touch story elements and not turn it to shit.

Every time I come across a thread mentioning this I start laughing again. Square Enix you morons! LOL!

hahahaahah so what it's just gonna be the fucking ISO or something? no way, they'll have to upgrade the textures right? re-translate right? add trophies maybe? ahahahaha I still can't believe it

I didn't even know about this until now, but yeah, this blows everything else out of the water. Square and Capcom fiercely competing to be the one sending the biggest middle finger to their early fans.

The game desperately needs a new translation.

Wait, I haven't played any of the remakes, are they still using that barely coherent translation? At least they must have fixed the typos, right?

there are without a doubt some lazy people at Square

FFXV is taking more than 5 years to do I am really curious to see if the time gives us innovative gameplay experiences

Final Fantasy XIII was a joke

and now this?

If it wasnt for Miyazaki, I would say that Japan is ten years late in game development

To tell the truth,i was expecting something like that from present day Square-Enix. Still believe MGS2 E3 trailer 2001 is the greatest troll of all time.

FUCK FUCK FUCK.

I got trolled. I was studying all day and I couldn't watch the stream. You know how Gmail has the little "Web Clip" bar at the top? Well one of today's Web Clips was from Engadget: "'Final Fantasy VII' is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 in Spring 2015"

I almost fucking lost it at the library. I was so amped to get my studying done and rejoice in the reveal trailer.

Screw you Square. Screw you Engadget.

Ouch.

At least for most of us the emotional roller coaster was about 30 seconds...

Nothing good would come of a real remake unless they totally switched up how they did it. And considering they've blown a metric ton on Advent Children styling... it'd be done like Advent Children, and I'd burn that remake in a fire before it even split cells.

I've never understood this opinion. Nothing has once stopped Tecmo from publishing their own game in other regions. But because it's on a Nintendo system, it's Nintendo's responsibility to publish it, right? I sincerely doubt that just because Nintendo published it in Japan they actively prevented Tecmo from doing so themselves outside of Japan.

And I guess you missed the memo that Nintendo did publish Fatal Frame 2 Remake for non Japanese gamers, unless I missed the memo on all PAL gamers being officially made into Japanese gamers.
