1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

so good. so many great selections from this soundtrack will likely be posted so here are two deep cuts you may not have heard.

Irate Eight (Land Theme) - this one probably gets glossed over because it only plays at the very beginning of the level before you jump into the water. if you go immediately to the right and jump in the water you'll only hear this one for about 10 seconds. such a shame. the bass tone is so warm and the accents are on point. also the horn that enters reminds me of Uninvisible-era Medeski, Martin, & Wood.

Jelly Jamboree - I rarely see this one mentioned but it is so good. that breakdown around 1m30s makes me put my stank face on. the bass tone on this one is also superb. seriously just let this one play out. it's that hypnotic head bob shit for sure.

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Best original soundtrack of the year by far. David Wise is a God. Irate Eight? Sawmill Thrill? Big Top Bop? I could just go on and on. Every song was unique and a pleasure to listen to.

2. Super Smash Bros. Wii U - Once again Smash Bros brings together a ton of composers for new and old remixes of songs, most of which turn out amazing. The sheer breadth of the soundtrack is astounding. The only reason it's less than DKC is because a good chunk of the OST were old remixes/tunes.

3. Shovel Knight - The Mega Man inspired game and soundtrack was just phenomenal.

1. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS ; The sheer number of remixes, medleys, and original tracks is astounding. Luckily, the quality of the music is just as amazing as the quanity with everything from blood-pumping tracks like Mute City to simplistic piano pieces like Midna's Lament. Hours will be spent in the My Music section scrolling through song after song after song from all eras of Nintendo's history.

2. DKC: Tropical Freeze ; I have no nostalgia for his music in the SNES games, but goddamn if David Wise didn't bring the goods. He absolutely nailed everything from the up-beat, in-your-face tracks to the more mellow, atmospheric songs.

3. Mario Kart 8 ; Electrifying and bombastic. Nintendo took the big band style of music used in 3D World and ran with it. The heavy use of instruments like the saxophone and electric guitar fits a colorful racer like this perfectly.

LttP. Hotline Miami ; I played this for the first time this year. Not only is it an amazing game, but its soundtrack has become one of my all-time favorites. The surreal feel of the game combines with the psychedelic vibes of the music and makes for a really nice adrenaline-filled experience.

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
The second I heard David Wise was back on board with the soundtrack for Tropical Freeze, I knew it would be something special. What I didn't expect was the unbelievably copious amounts of fantastic music that we got in the game. From the remixes of past songs to the all new arrangements, every piece of music brings the levels in the game to life. It really wasn't a difficult pick for the best soundtrack of the year for me. Tropical Freeze wins by a wide margin.

Scorch 'N' Torch
Grassland Groove

2. Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
The Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton series' are two of my favorite franchises of all time and the music in their games have always been some of my favorite. Many of the songs in Layton vs Ace Attorney are pulled from past games, but what the game does so well is mash up the styles of each to create a wonderful mix of Professor Layton's orchestrated classical feel and Phoenix Wright's more up tempo courtroom appropriate feel. An astounding soundtrack.

Main Theme
Professor Layton's Theme

3. Mario Kart 8
I love jazzy soundtracks and Mario Kart 8 deals out some seriously fun jazz/big band music. There really weren't any songs in the game that I didn't like. The DLC we got this year only added to the already incredible soundtrack. Mute City ftw.

Mute City

1. The Banner Saga
A majestic, beautiful and somewhat nostalgic soundtrack that fits perfectly into a very special game. It loses some of its power outside the game, but is crucial for its fantastic atmosphere.
We are all Guests upon the Land
Onward (spoilers in the comments)
Of Our Bones, Our Hills
Cut with a Keen-Edged Sword

2. Divinity: Original Sin
This soundtrack slaps you in the face from the very beginning, when "Original Sin" starts to play on the Main Menu, and keeps throwing at you gorgeous songs all game long.
Original Sin
Mysterious Guest
Power of Innocence
Medieval Tears

3. Transistor
Plain and simple, a wonderful soundtrack.
Old Friends
The Spine
We All Become
In Circles

Honourable Mentions

-Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes
A game capable of making a good use of this song deserves to be here.

My vote goes for these games:

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - need I say more? Pretty much earlier posters have said, this is the best soundtrack all year. David Wise GOAT! Samples include:
Busted Bayou
Amiss Abyss

2. Super Smash Bros (Wii U versions have almost the 3DS music so I'll just have them combined) - When you have an all-star cast, you also get a compilation of some of gaming's best music. Samples of the new ones include:
Megaman 2 Medley
Gerudo Valley

3. Kirby Triple Deluxe - Handhelds sometimes get ignored for best soundtracks, so might as well highlight this year's best soundtracks in the handheld side. Some samples include:
A Well-Earned Rest
Sullied Grace

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Composed by David Wise and Kenji Yamamoto (best known for Metroid Prime 1-2-3). The soundtrack is often praised around here, but the game in general is criminally underrated. It's arguably one of the best sidescrolling platformers I've ever played, and the soundtrack is a huge factor in this.

A game soundtrack should never be just a bunch of cool songs to listen to while playing. The soundtrack, together with the art style, is the most important factor in defining the mood and the atmosphere of a game. Tropical Freeze is a perfect example of this: there's a huge variety of songs, each better than the next, thus giving every level its own unique feel.

2. Shovel Knight

3. Transistor

I still haven't finished it. The tracks I've heard so far, though, are incredible. Definitely worth a vote.

SPECIAL MENTION: Kirby: Triple Deluxe

For the best boss battle soundtrack of the year. The first phase is unbelievable for a Kirby game (well -- not really if you're familiar with the series). The metal-ish electric guitar, the evil laugh, the general feeling of danger and uneasiness... but as you manage to struggle through it, Moonstruck Blossom starts playing. A pacific and melancholic theme right at the end of the final battle. The atmosphere changes drastically and you feel back in control, with a note of sadness for the fate of your enemy. Brilliant.

LTTP: Bravely Default. Sorry Revo, I'm European.

1. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Though released in late 2013 in Japan, it was released this year in NA + EU. Like FFXIII and FFXIII-2, the music is very dynamic once again and explores many different kinds of genres. I highly recommend listening to the whole FFXIII series soundtracks because it really is some incredible music. Three different musicians worked on the music - Masashi Hamauzu, Naoshi Mizuta, & Mitsuto Suzuki. Some notable tracks:

Ouroboros Festival - A "goa trance"-like song that plays in the party atmosphere town of Yusnaan.
Altar of Light - A trippy musical theme featuring an electric guitar, strings, and drums that plays in the last dungeon.
Graveyard of Dreams - A slow, sombre piece that plays in the desolate Dead Dunes.
Almighty Bhunivelze - A song featuring a choir, organ, and brass instruments that plays during the final boss battle.

2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii U

Dozens of musicians came together to remix various tracks featured in many Nintendo games. There are so many different genres and styles that it is impossible to not like the soundtrack. Some notable tracks:

Main Theme / Underworld Theme (The Legend of Zelda) - An orchestral arrangement of some themes from The Legend of Zelda series
Gerudo Valley - A remix of the Gerudo Valley song from TLOZ:OOT
Escape - An orchestral arrangement of the Escape theme from the Metroid series
King Dedede's Theme Ver. 2 - An "oriental" remix of King Dedede's theme from the Kirby series

3. Final Fantasy X HD Remaster

Though released in late 2013 in Japan, it was released this year in NA + EU. The soundtrack for FFX HD was re-arranged, though there are still some similarities between it and the original's soundtrack. Re-arranged by Masashi Hamauzu, Junya Nakano, Nobuo Uematsu, Tsutomu Narita, Shiro Hamaguchi, and Ryo Yamazki, the soundtrack ranges from upbeat melodies to sombre songs to fit the game's dark theme. Some notable songs:

This is Your Story
Besaid
Challenge
Jecht's Theme

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

There are game soundtracks you fall in love with after you play the game, there are game soundtracks you hear that make you want to play the game, and then there's this. David Wise's score is so good it's almost ridiculous. The fact that there is no official soundtrack for this game is probably one of the most mind-boggling things I have ever experienced. I could go on praising various melodies, but the proof really is in the pudding.

mariokart86tpbr.jpg

2. Mario Kart 8

I've never exactly disliked the music of the Mario Kart series, but for the most part, track songs tend to be a little subdued. Not so in this installment. From the moment you hear the title of the game being yelled with excitement, you're instantly hooked. Whether it's the jazzy goodness of Dolphin Shoals, the big band metal of Bowser's Castle, or the epic escalation of Mount Wario, this soundtrack doesn't let you go, to the point where you almost want to slow down just to hear the music for a little while longer.

And let's not forget about the great re-recordings:

warlordsofdraenorjop4s.jpg

3. World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor

The real reason to own the collector's edition. WoW soundtracks are generally a cut above the rest, but I don't think I've felt this enthralled by the music running in the background since The Burning Crusade. It takes a lot to draw a dedicated player's attention away from levelling, but it just keeps happening to me.

1. D4
There aren't enough mentions of D4's soundtrack in here. It's so good, and incredibly catchy. It has all of the hallmarks of what I consider to be a great soundtrack, using multiple genres of music and a wide variety of instruments to create a ton of memorable tracks.
Theme of D4
Dectective of the Past
Real Blood
Arousal
Recollections
Side Connection
Only Love

2. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire
The remakes do a really good job with recreating the music from the original games, and add new songs into the mix too.
Team Magma/Aqua Leader Battle Theme
Zinnia Battle Theme
Rival Battle Theme
Gym Leader Battle Theme
Wally Battle Theme

3. Bravely Default
Great music with a good use of a variety of instruments. All of the battle themes are pretty great, but these three are my favorites.
That Person's Name Is
Fighting to the End
Conflict's Chime

[*]Late Ports: No late ports’ soundtracks (ex: Metal Gear Rising) are eligible for voting, full-stop. If you would like to mention a late port’s soundtrack, please mention it in your LTTP vote.

Would have been hilariously appropriate had it won twice (lol MGS4). Well deserved win for last year.

Anyways:

1. Shovel Knight
The Defender
The Decadent Dandy
No Weapons Here

A positively phenomenal effort by jake kaufman, with fantastic battle themes that seem to defy their very restriction, despite the fact that the entire soundtrack is done in the same technology as late famicom games.

2. Bayonetta 2
Beyond Time
The Great War, Land Battle
Alraune, Whisperer Of Dementia

I'm an absolute sucker for orchestral bombing. The sweeping pieces provide an excellent accompaniment to the rather over-the-top story sequences. However, having played both for the first time this year, I think it's honestly weaker than it's predecessor in terms of soundtrack, which stops it from taking my top spot.

3. Mario Kart 8

Honorable Mentions:
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

I am not going to vote for it on the basis that I have not played it, but the samples I have heard make fantastic use of ambient elements.

LTTP:
Bayonetta
You May Call me Father
In the Choice Between Good and Evil

A soundtrack so good it dominates that of it's sequel. "You May Call me Father" for
the fight against Balder
in Bayonetta 2,
while an excellent callback
, almost exists to state that the original soundtrack of the sequel can't stand on its own. And for the record, I'm not a tremendous fan of the non-orchestral pieces.
Except the credit's music

Oh man, how the hell am I going to top my SMT IV post from last year lol

I have a few candidates from OSTs this year, but I can't think of one outstanding one I want to focus on at the moment.

I'll do some soul-searching.

Dark Schala

Eloquent Princess
Man! I have to get to Transistor and Divinity soon since I haven't played many games in months. Both sound pretty good.

Enjoying a lot of people's writeups so far. I don't know if I'll start highlighting particular soundtracks like Nert did in the past since I'm lacking for time, but if I start feeling like I absolutely need to while listening to something, I will. Other people are highly encouraged to do this too, since GSR and I did it a few years ago in addition to Nert.

And I'm totally looking forward to your vote, Thoraxes, even if you can't find a singular outstanding soundtrack. I feel like I'm in a semi-similar position, although my personal "awards" are all sorted out early this time!

Would have been hilariously appropriate had it won twice (lol MGS4). Well deserved win for last year.
(Honestly it was the initial reason behind the addition of the LTTP vote.)

I don't feel like I even played three 2014 games with great soundtracks yet, it's definitely not gonna be a hard choice like last year this time. But I still have some games I want to play soon, I just have to remember to get my vote in before the deadline. I definitely have a game in mind for the LTTP vote, so I shouldn't forget.
Going by the votes so far, I should play the new Donkey Kong sometime.

all these DK votes

I don't have enough thumbs to give to you guys. Nothing else comes even close, man

The thing is, it's an entire goddamn soundtrack, and a sizeable one, too. I can easily point to other tracks I've enjoyed as much or bigger soundtracks with a lot of stand-out compositions but something that's as fantastic from start to finish? One of the best OSTs to come out of the medium, period.

Thanks to Schala for reminding me to vote lol. To be honest, I wanted to vote for Bravely Default, but I already voted it last year. Since I didn't play Tropical Freeze, no vote for it eventhough I really like its OST. So here's my top 3 and a single honorable mention:

Top 3
1. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Over 400 tracks available in this game, which a mix of new and old songs, both original composition and arranged/remixed version. While some memorable old remix aren’t in this game (such as Fountain of Dreams ;__;), the new ones are well enough to make the game music enjoyable when playing this game. Some of the new tracks that in the series for the 1st time that I like are Route 10 and Magicant / Eight Melodies (Mother), both by Yoko Shimomura, Menu theme by Junichi Nakatsuru, Running / Countdown by Kumi Tanioka and also N’s Castle Medley by Shota Kageyama.

2. Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire
Trumpet remix! One of the reason that people don’t like Gen 3 songs are due to the overuse of trumpet (I think). In this remake, I believe there’s less use of trumpet for both new and remix tracks. While some of the remix are less stellar compare to another version (such as Elite 4 theme which is outshined by its anime counterpart), there are few that hit the mark. For example Bicycle Theme and Battle! (Regirock / Regice / Registeel). As for new tracks, it’s definitely Battle! VS Zinnia and Rival Theme (which plays when meeting Wally at Victory Road, not Brendan/May battle theme) that stand on the top.

3. Drakengard 3
For me tracks in this game is the game’s saving grace. Without a spectacular OST, I’m not sure I can finish the game. The tracks that I like but not limited to are Tsukiru 3, Leaf of Chaos / Battlefield and The Upcoming Battle / Battlefield.

Honorable Mention
Azure Striker Gunvolt
Noticable tracks:
Beyond the Blue by Megu Sakuragawa (Morpho)
Nebulous Clock by Megu Sakuragawa (Morpho)
Epilogue (長き夜が明ける) by Ryo Kawakami

Falk

that puzzling face
don't vote for stuff that I know will DQ you from your vote, bb. <3

See, that's the thing. I'm technically compelled not to vote because I'd be fundamentally voting against the albums that I want to win! (This is completely aside from involvement; I genuinely think the work put in by everyone else involved, especially the actual composers and arrangers, deserve recognition)

But that aside, I'll bite! Here are my three extremely dubious entries:

1) Bravely Default
Reason for being dubious
I honestly consider this a 2012 soundtrack. I listened to it in its entirety back then and would have voted for it back then. However, I'm gonna say it's fair game, personally not because there was a NA release this year, but because I got a 3DS this year. (I know the rules allow it for a completely different reason lol) And honestly this soundtrack is too good for me not to vote it first place at least once ever.

REVO is amazing and I wish more devs could afford his services for games. He brings the entire kitchen sink to his projects, up to his signature concerts, additional vocal themes, etc. that give a game a sonic branding so far beyond what's just on the game disc/cart.

Highlight Reel
- Ship Soaring Through The Heavens - An airship theme can make or break any JRPG considering one of the tropes is when you get access to the proverbial keys to the world. Also not many airship themes are a direct, obvious arrangement of one of the game's main leitmotifs, one of the things this track does extremely well.
- That Person's Name Is - There were other boss battles in the game, but the Asterisk holders resonated the most because of many them had personal relationships with the characters.
- Inflitrating Enemy Territory - Here's one I don't expect many people who voted BD to actually put on a highlight reel. As a dungeon theme, it runs the risk of becoming overly stale or repetitive, especially for completionists. Here, REVO shows mastery of being able to balance being creative/memorable without going overboard and creating moments that get annoyingly bombastic to listen to on the 400th repeat. Also it's simply a very cool throwback to the style of JRPG music from console generations past, with modern production values.

2) D4
Reason for being dubious
Since VGO has stuff on the OST (from our Taiwan concert) I've directly worked on the 'OST'. However since that's really in the realm of bonus tracks and not found in the game itself, I'm considering it fair game.

D4, like most of Access Games' other projects, is a gem that unfortunately isn't getting all the recognition it should. The music especially is so underappreciated in a world where everyone's trying to get that one orchestral sound, or to go bigger, or to simply cut back and go electronica/chiptune (Not that there's anything wrong with any of those, obviously)

Highlight Reel
- Theme of D4 - This is literally the game personified in audio form. Everything from the suave lines to the subtle rhythms, to the mysterious sound of the piano break.
- Drank Dead DOM Die - Because riverdance! Where else do you hear hilariously inappropriate expletives in a game soundtrack!

3) Fantasia Music Evolved
Reason for being dubious
This is double-dubious. Firstly because it's largely a licensed soundtrack, the way e.g. GTA and Brutal Legend are. However, considering that the music in this has been adapted to be much greater than its original form, it technically could count as an arrangement album of sorts. Secondly, James Landino (KgZ, sanic fangames) was involved in the project, so it's a little biased of me to sing praises for it, but what the heck.

I think that internet vitriol aside, a lot of the stuff that Harmonix has done with music in this game is completely groundbreaking. There are a lot of things that games not in the music/rhythm game genre can learn about adaptability and interactivity in their scores just by playing the game. Sometimes I wish Harmonix would just become a technology/outsource company, but then again if that happened we wouldn't get Amplitude PS4. :V

Highlight Reel
I don't think a highlight reel kinda works for this because you need to experience it for yourself, not to mention every person's playthrough of something ends up with different music. (I could link the original songs but then what's the point, that's not the reason I'm nominating this game). Gotta say that out of the tracklist Bohemian Rhapsody stood head and shoulders above the rest in how utterly hilarious and awesome it was in equal measures.

There really are a lot of other soundtracks I want to at least mention because despite what it might seem like to a casual observer, 2014 was amazing for VGM. However if I start I won't stop, so I'll just leave it at that.
for now

1. Bayonetta 2
RIVDPAM.jpg

Absolute fantastic soundtrack and by far my favourite of the year. It's a complete mixture of jazzy tunes, pop vocal tracks and bombastic epic orchestral sounds. It's a perfect successor to the first game. Much as Bayonetta herself is stylish, fast and powerful, this soundtrack not only complements the crazy action in the game but also her nature.

People already posted great tracks from this game, so i will list other but also noteworthy tracks here:

Bayonetta 2 - The Lumen Sage & Temperantia
All the Lumen Sage fights were amazing in this game and this particular track is exceptional. 1:20 is amazing

Bayonetta 2 - The Legend Of Aesir
When you start this game you get thrown right into the gameplay while listening to this. just ... wow.

Bayonetta 2 - Capital of Noatun
Noatun is the first big area you get to explore. This soothing track just fits perfectly as you take your time to walk around the city, discover all the secrets and just enjoy the beautiful vistas.

2. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

3. Shovel Knight

Honorable mention: Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Speedwagon

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
1. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

2. Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire

3. Hyrule Warriors

1. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Wise at his best. The most varied soundtrack of the year and perhaps all-time. It covers all bases, from epic guitars to soothing ambient. A masterpiece.

Favorite track:
Seashore War

2.TxK

Lasers, lasers everywhere! If you like electronic music there was no better soundtrack than this one this year.

Favorite track:
Noise Pulse

3. Wolfenstein: The New Order

First of all, Mick Gordon delivers another outstanding score after his stellar work on Killer Instinct. But what really enhances the soundtrack are the cheesy German songs (Tapfer Kleine Liebling, Haus in Neu-Berlin) that really nail the tone of the game and do a great job of fleshing out the world. Bonus points for using Meshuggah's Fredrik Thordendal to deliver the droning riff for Herr Faust.

1. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
In many ways I would say getting back David Wise was not a stroke of genius merely because of his amazing work in tailoring the original trilogy's timeless soundtrack, but also for being perhaps the best qualified to be able to depict the evolution of Donkey Kong Country with it. David Wise has been there from the start. Much like the Donkey Kong Country franchise, he's evolved, and the reunion spells out the best possible result where both facets surrounding the production are at their absolute peak, being able to live up to their fullest potential. It'd be easy to phone in the job and play off of the countless nostalgia associated with the franchise's soundtrack by having Wise pump it full of remixes, but in taking the high road the soundtrack manages to do more than just live off of the predecessor's fame and provide a soundtrack that manages to evoke that timeless nostalgia simply on account of masterful composition and production. The beautiful melodies, the detailed textures and the fantastic instrumentation manages to breathe life into every frame and movement within the game. Hell, the fact that the soundtrack alone managed to elevate the sequel from it's predecessor significantly is so incredibly telling of how important music is to games.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze's soundtrack is a beautiful, timeless work of art that is equally imbued in memories of the past, the atmosphere of present and the outlook of the future. It's an instant classic that will easily be treasured for years to come.
Notable Tracks: Seashore War, Scorch n Torch

2. Mario Kart 8
The amount of focus that Nintendo puts into music never ceases to amaze me. If you just YouTube Mario Kart 8's music, you'll be able to find some live recordings of the game's music team performing all the music live, and the result is some of the most tightly crafted big band compositions in a game I've yet to experience. Beautiful saxes and trumpets evoke one hell of a swinging, jazzy feeling, the odd guitar to break up the action manages to add several layers of unexpected variety, stellar percussion as a whole and even the electronic influences with such standouts as Electrodrome manages to push Mario Kart 8's soundtrack into a jazzy, groovy, action-packed soundtrack that makes the races all the more colorful and multifaceted. You can put any song on during a party and it'd be impossible not to jam with the groove. With the amount of production gone into it, Mario Kart finally managed to get the Galaxy and 3D World treatment with it's music.
Notable Tracks: Electrodrome, Staff Credits

f876zBq.png

3. Shovel Knight
Jake Kaufman has been something of a personal hero of mine ever since I discovered his music (and games associated with him/WayForward) through Mighty Switch Force. Shovel Knight not only exposes his sheer sense of melody but his technical prowess for making music. The incredible amount of complexity in each layer of sound is made so tight and rigid as to barely be playable on a Famicom, and not a single beat is missed in there. Much like the game itself, the soundtrack is a spectacular celebration of the bygone 8-bit era, and is the most perfect exemplary of retro nostalgia done well, where it's not made to capitalize off of it's inspirations but made to respect it and make something that would have been just as fantastic now as it would have been back then.
Notable Tracks: Strike the Earth! (Plains of Passage), La Danse Macabre (The Lich Yard)

Idem for me .

Caldisla: the Beginning Country

Snake Eating the Horizon

2. Professor Layton vs. Ace Attourney
Another delayed soundtrack but it deserves its place as the arrangements from both franchises sound amazing and the sounds that are original to this game are able to stand-out on their own.

Objection 2013
The Town's Past
Cornered: Spell Breaker

3. Super Smash Bros. Wii U
What are we looking at, 40+ composers now that have worked on arrangements for this one game all of which sound amazing.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zero. I love Harry Gregson-Williams.
I'm really looking forward to his TPP soundtrack.
He also did some of the scores for CoD:AW which had a motif from CoD:4 which I also liked.

Another would be Destiny. Although it seriously lacks content, it had a really good score.
If its ok to mention a remastered game, The Last of Us had a really memorable theme.

Edited:
1. MGS: GZ
2. Destiny
3. CoD: AW

If remastered games are ok, TLoU and CoD are a tie.

1. Ar nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star

The Ar Tonelico series had incredible music and this prequel certainly lived up to expectations. I was wondering where they could go from having KOKIA in AT3, Origa was an excellent unexpected choice. The soundtrack is full of nods to tracks and styles from the previous games so it's nostalgic for fans as well as bautiful in its own right.

em-pyei-n vari-fen jang

2. Atelier Escha and Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky

This game has such a range of atmospheres as you progress through the story, from slice of life baking apple pies to end of the world darkness, to exploring on an adventure to the end of the world, the soundtrack is absolutely packed to bursting point. One of my favourite tracks, Mugendai Chronicle is only normally used for a super finishing move, but thankfully the game has the option to let you select from about 300 tracks to use wherever you like in the game. Fulcrum is one of my favourite battle tracks in years, one of those tracks I never tired of hearing, even over hundreds of battles.

Sky of Twilight
Mugendai Chronicle
Fulcrum
The Pen and the Sword Part 3

3. Tears to Tiara 2

This game has a great mix of soft relaxing tracks, rousing military tracks you'd expect from a SRPG like this, then some darker, foreboding tracks. The numerous version of "As a boy before you" really hit home with how complex the main character Hamilcar is. The person he was pretending to be to keep the peace, the person he wanted to be for his people, the person he really wants to be and the person he actually is and who he feels he can trust to see each of those personas.

This ost had a great mix of space opera and mecha anime type tracks
Sora no Senritsu

Battle Princess of Arcadias
The music to this game is so damn happy and energetic it made playing the game a far more enjoyable experience. Liuke everything else in the game, it's way better when they get experimental and mix things up

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
One of the best gaming soundtracks ever made. It is so entwined with the gameplay that it plays a huge part in the overall structure of the game.

2. Super Smash Bros Wii U
So many classic and remixed tunes bring a swathe of nostalgia rushing back to pump up that adrenaline for the next fight.

3. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
Soaring classical rhythms and crescendos add amazing atmosphere to the game.

Honourable mention: Shovel Knight

1. Shovel Knight

Both this game and its soundtrack are my favorite of the year. Chip music is some of the greatest, catchiest, most effective music around, and with Shovel Knight, Jake Kaufman perfectly captures what made chip music so wonderful and ahead of its time back in the NES era. He really nails those epic, irresistibly catchy 8-bit anthems that helped make Mega Man so iconic and memorable, and many of the songs have that driving "je ne sais quoi" quality found in 8-bit music like Mega Man 2's Wily Castle 1/2 theme that really gets your blood pumping. This is an easy choice for me.

Notable tracks (bolded tracks indicate my very favorite ones from each game):
- Strike the Earth! (Plains of Passage)
- In the Halls of the Usurper (Pridemoor Keep)
- High Above the Land (Flying Machine)
- A Thousand Leages Below (Iron Whale)
- The Requiem of Shield Knight
- The Defender (Black Knight - Second Battle)
- Courage Under Fire (Armorer Village)
- La Danse Macabre (Lich Yard)
- A Cool Reception (Stranded Ship)
- The Fateful Return (Tower of Fate - Approach)

2. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / Nintendo 3DS
Super-Smash-Bros-3DS-Wii-U.jpg

When you have a roster of Nintendo's most beloved characters as well as the three most iconic third-party characters of all time, you get all the amazing music that comes with them, and in Smash's case, you also get a ton of remixes, rearrangements, and medleys put together by a who's-who list of the game industry's top musicians. This one speaks for itself.

Notable tracks:
- Menu
- Fortress Boss Remix (Super Mario World)
- Rainbow Road Medley
- Gerudo Valley (Remix)
- Full Steam Ahead (Remix)
- Yoshi's Island Remix
- King Dedede's Theme Ver. 2
- Route 10 Remix (Pokémon Black/White)
- Onett / Winters Theme
- Destroyed Skyworld (Remix)
- Stage Select (Pikmin 2) Remix
- Duck Hunt Medley
- Shadow Man Stage (Remix)
- Balloon Fight Medley

3. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
TM_WiiU_DonkeyKongCountryTropicalFreeze.png

Getting David Wise to return for music duties was one of the many, many ways Nintendo and Retro knocked it out of the park with this game. While I don't necessarily find Tropical Freeze's music to be quite as consistent as Donkey Kong Country 2's soundtrack, this album quite frequently hits unbelievable highs that most other games' music (DKC 2's included) couldn't even dream of hitting. Here's hoping Wise returns for every DKC game from here on out!

Notable tracks:
- Mangrove Cove
- Shipwreck Shore
- Busted Bayou
- Trunk Twister
- Alpine Incline (Ground)
- Alpine Incline (Mountain)
- Grassland Groove
- Twilight Terror ~ Stickerbrush Symphony
- Fruity Factory
- Homecoming Hijinx
- Seashore War

1. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Smash Bros. not only brings together many of the best composers in the industry, but also many of the best franchises. Yes, most of the tracks in this game are remixes, but they’re just so good. Not only that, but even the original songs are the best in the series for me. There are a lot of stand-out tracks, and I feel sad leaving many of them out, but here are the ones I’m listening to lately:
Final Destination Ver. 2
Route 10 (Pokémon B/W)
Duck Hunt Medley
Yoshi's Woolly World
Mission Mode (Pikmin 3)
Wii Sports Medley
Xenoblade Chronicles Medley

2. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
I feel like this is a clear favorite on GAF. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze brings back David Wise, and he hasn’t lost his touch. Masterful execution of all fronts. This game is a perfect example of the importance of a good soundtrack. Here are my top tracks:
Mangrove Cove
Homecoming Hijinx
Cannon Canyon

3. Mario Kart 8
I was never that impressed with the music in Mario Kart. I mean, it was good, but nothing mindblowing. Then Mario Kart 8 came out and essentially got the 3D Mario treatment. Never did I think this would be on my best soundtrack list of the year. Some of my favorite songs:
Main Theme
Mario Kart Stadium
Dragon Driftway

_______________

LTTP: Persona 4 Golden
Man oh man. Ever since I finished this in the summer, I've been obsessed with the soundtrack. This would definitely have been in my top 3 if it was released this year. So much good stuff.
Pursuing My True Self
Signs of Love
Your Affection
Heaven

1. Shovel Knight: Unequivocally the best soundtrack this year. Much respect for Jake Kaufman for creating a soundtrack that relies on tradition without sounding boring or rehashed.

-Track of the year right here. Feels. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZCX7Et0Rfw

2. Bayonetta 2: The soundtrack makes me feel like a total badass playing this game. Tomorrow Is Mine is an amazing theme song, and a lot of the orchestral stuff has a lot of depth to it.
