Goddamnit. I hate that every fucking game has to bear the burden of a possible sequel these days.

I hope Naughty Dog chooses not to do it.
New AAA IP every year. Yeah like that is even possible.

The Last Of Us was good right? Hopefully the sequel is better. Feel free not to buy sequels though. Doubt you'll have much to play.

It's right there in the Grounded documentary (readily available on YouTube).

You know, I was in the camp of not wanting a sequel until I read this. If this is true, then I'd love to see what this universe sprouts into from Ellie's perspective. I'm confident it won't be some cookie-cutter story about her trying to take down some Firefly off-shoot, solo, or anything.

Dont employees have to sign contracts that hold up even after they leave which prevent them from speaking or mentioning unannounced games?

Ok. Need some advice here guys.

I really want a cheap game for my PS4, The last of US keeps coming up as a game that I should get but here is my problem:-

I don't particularly like cinematic games, I find an abundance of cutscenes annoying and I'm really not a fan of slow, plodding games (Need balls to wall action in my games)

Despite this, time and time again my friends have implored me to give TLOU a go. They all say it is the one game that I will love the change of pace even though its not my "type" of game.

Honestly guys, would I be making a mistake in buying it? Remember, im only really buying it because its cheap and I want something "meaty" for my PS4 in terms of a single player experience.

I'm sure the PS4 version will be great, but will probably be 30 FPS and push the hardware to the limits, especially after Uncharted 4.

So, I'll wait for The Last of Us 2 Remastered on PS5 in 4K Ultra HD - 60 FPS with all its DLC included.

It should be a PS5 launch title :p

I do hope this is something ND wanted and not something Sony imposed on them, but nonetheless, I think there's plenty of things you can do in that setting, and especially coming from Neil Druckmann who is a very talented writer.

Yeah me too, I hope their bosses don't care about money. Let them do whatever project they please.

Lead Character Artist Michael Knowland, who worked on The Last of Us , left Naughty Dog quite recently

In his Linkedin Profile he revealed that he is/was working on Uncharted 4 and an Unnanounced AAA Game.

But it looks like he updated his profile, and now it say The Last of Us 2

The Linkedin Profile of his Follower Frank Tzeng also says Uncharted 4 and Unannounced AAA Game.

He didn't mention unannounced games. He said he worked on prototypes for TLOU2, something which Neil Druckmann already said they were doing months ago.

He said they worked on several different ideas after TLOU, including TLOU2, but then they eventually took over Uncharted 4.

No.

It's not as cinematic as touted. There's not many cutscenes or forced pace breakers.

And even though it can be a slow paced game, you can play the game with an actiony slant to it as well, and frankly, in some ways, those moments are the best parts of the game. Your limited ammo and life, plus the aggressive AI means that when the action gets going, you're constantly in a balls to the wall ohshit moment .

It's far from something like MGS4 in terms of cutscenes. It's probably around 1.5 hours of them in a 16 hour game.

The Last of Us was a new IP and it sold better than most first party PS3 games. That tells me that from a business standpoint the "business" should stay the fuck out of ND, and they will continue to do whatever gets their creative juices going. And they can only do one game at a time, so if they want to do something else then TLOU2 will not get made.

The fact that we're up to the fourth Uncharted game says that business plays its part at ND. TLoU sold as well as it did because of the ND name and word of mouth. Building a new IP is hard, and being successful at it twice in one generation is something you don't take for granted by setting your newest property aside, just after it sold millions and brought your studio up another notch in the praise department. As mentioned by another member, ND would be silly to let TLoU go undeveloped while it's still very much in millions of gamer's minds.

To me what that says is that ND wanted to make those Uncharted games. The fact that they're even still making Uncharted after TLOU was more successful in every metric a business man can come up with says everything.

Whether their next project is a sequel to TLOU (I'm sure they have more than one concept for that going around), an Uncharted 5: A Thief's End For Good This Time or a completely new IP is totally up in the air, and I don't think commercial viability will be part of that decision. This is one of the top studios in this industry, they get to work on whatever they want.

Is the notion that Naughty Dog wanting to continue working on Uncharted and TLOU weird?

We've heard time and time again that new IPs are hard.

You also should have read that toward the end of my post. ;)

I don't think it's weird, but was just addressing the members that didn't agree that great sales mean a sequel should be expected. Yes, the folks at ND are undoubtedly artists that want to make great games, but they also have a job to do. We both recognize that new IP are difficult to build, so the success of TLoU probably makes their decision quite a bit easier. I mean, do you take on the stress of building a new IP once again, or do you take on a sequel which - while presenting its own difficulties - allows you a chance to be creative while providing the cushion of already having a popular universe and characters? It seems ND have chosen the latter of the two, and I don't blame them. I'm very excited to see a sequel to TLoU and have no problem waiting for a new IP. If the folks at ND need a little more time to generate the ideas that a new property requires and don't want to take on the stress that they *just* dealt with, then so be it.

To me what that says is that ND wanted to make those Uncharted games. The fact that they're even still making Uncharted after TLOU was more successful in every metric a business man can come up with says everything.

Whether their next project is one of several ideas they have cooking up in the universe of TLOU, an Uncharted 5 or a completely new IP is totally up in the air, and I don't think commercial viability will be part of that decision. This is one of the top studios in this industry, they get to work on whatever they want.

First, the fact that U4 is coming out before TLoU2 only means that U4 was being worked on while TLoU was still in development. I might be forgetting something here, but the U3 team led by Amy Hennig was busy with U4, but then Amy left and now Druckmann and Straley are at the helm. So, your point is most likely inaccurate and therefore moot. Second, they are one of the top studios because their games are successful. If that stops being the case, they will lose their creative freedom. Making sequels to established franchises makes sense from a business and creative standpoint, as it keeps them in good standing and does allow them to take risks. TLoU was a risk that turned out to be a great game, and ND would be foolish not to capitalize on that. Also, if you don't think that commercial viability is a concern, than I think you're being very naive. The devs don't own the studio and they have talked about how the decisions they make while developing sequels centers around making gameplay changes that evolve the core mechanics, while not alienating the fans. Now, why would you do that, unless you're worried about commercial viability?

Ok, im not entirely convinced, but the end of the day its only costing me 12 pounds. I must can find some enjoyment out of that. Thanks for the replies.

ND said TLoU is basically origin story for Ellie, the next game will definitely be grown up Ellie or they shouldn't bother making sequel.

I hope ND doesn't stick with Ellie and Joel and just go with different survivor in another country. I don't want them to get stuck into their Elena syndrome. Drake should have been given different companion each game to make his interaction less stale.

I like that idea. They could have flashbacks integrated through out the whole game showing what's happened between the two games.

actually, if TLoU is any indication, they seem to like leaving a span of time left untold, let the player imagine what happened in between season in the game. so I wouldn't be surprised if TLoU starring grown up Ellie will just ignore Joel other than small hint here and there.

The combat is very good, but for me I enjoyed the game more at higher difficulties. On something like Hard you'll probably have enough ammo to wipe out a room full of guys if you find yourself in a bad spot and the damage done is low enough that you get to improvise. But, it will take you a while to get more supplies and you'll feel the stress of that until you do. Sounds awful, but it was a great experience for me. And Grounded Mode inspired more fear than most horror games.

Druckmann spoke about the Ellie guitar scene in their live epilogue as a closure point for those two characters. I know GAF likes to assume the worst with shit like this but I think if we do see a sequel then it will be with a new cast. Considering that everyone assumed TLOU's story would be cliche and dramatic during development, I think ND deserves the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I hope they completely butcher everything they were going for in the first game.

The fireflies finally track down Joel and Ellie, Ellie is taken in for research while Joel is able to free himself after Tommy pulls some strings. Ellie dies during testing but a vaccine that renders one temporarily immune to the spores is found. As a by-product of their research they also find out that when the spores bind to a host they grant the host immortality. By distilling the spores they are able to inject it into themselves and gain immortality while protecting themselves from the degeneration into a clicker by periodically taking Ellie's cure.

The year is now 30XX and humans have colonized Mars. The military defeated the fireflies and still remain in control. Children growing up are threatened with death while humans that reach maturity are injected with the immortality syrum and are forced to work in order to receive Ellie's cure. It's on Mars that we meet Joel, now bald and with a tear-drop tattoo underneath his eye, he works as a spore harvester by hunting down people who weren't able to earn their vaccine. One morning while out on a retrieval run in his mech he comes across a woman being surrounded by clickers, Joel helps her escape. She reveals herself to be from the future and was trying to flee from an organization that equates to the current military. She found out that the spores were a military corporation conspiracy and she was trying to go back in time to stop them when her time warp was interrupted by soldiers. A flash of light erupts in the air and out emerge mechs that were chasing her. Joel and the woman get into his mech to fend off the intruders. Joel is now wanted by the future military, he only has so much time before his vaccine runs out and he starts to turn. No time to get more, they have to time jump back and stop the virus from being brought out.

I was going to debut in this thread by pining for new IP and Savage Starlight. I will settle for this instead. I just hope that Joel has grappling hooks for arms.

Edit: Leave Ellie and Joel's story alone and move on to new characters, new plot, new country? ..and timeline; maybe even months or a year or two after the outbreak.

How the hell do you make a sequel to probably the best game of the generation?

That burden has to be just immense.

New hardware should make it a little easier. Larger, more believable environments and AI that's as good as what was shown in the reveal sequence would be a great start. And no, I'm not saying go open world, just large enough so that walking through the woods or by a river is more convincing than it was in the first game. The improved lighting capabilities could also be used to improve tension in dimly lit areas full of hostiles. The story could very well be every bit as good or even better than the original, but I think the way you slowly become attached to Ellie in the first game is something that would be almost impossible to replicate in a sequel.

I think it would be great to witness the masses lose their humanity. That kind of world lends itself to the full spectrum of human behavior and you'd never really know what to expect from a stranger.

They made two highly successful IP in a single generation. It was never likely that they'd simply move on from the newest of the two and U4 made sense since Sony needs a proven heavy hitter from ND.

Honestly I have to imagine ND almost certainly enjoys making Uncharted games. I can't imagine Sony had to twist any arms to make UC4.

As for TLOU, I'm sure it's up to ND. I however would like them to do a new IP.

That's cool, but it sounds like an incredibly stressful time for everyone involved. There's also the risk of failure to consider, especially when you have two properties that have room for expansion and creative expression that are also very likely to make piles of money. I wouldn't be surprised if ND got the itch for another IP soon, if they haven't got it already.

A direct TLOU sequel is fine by me. Even better if Ellie as a lead. I can live with a TLOU2 w/o Joel... But Ellie just needs to be there. I want to know how Ellie gorws up as a person in that kind of world w/ basically no parents to look up to.
