Fix for PSN Login Issues

Worked for me in Pittsburgh. Is this something I should change back to 1500 after everything is fixed or just leave it this way?

Worked for me in Colombia, South America. Thanks OP!
Go to your PC or laptop and determine your optimum size (MTU) that can be sent in 1 lump and not 2 will optimise your bandwidth and login potential.

Its your router that does this.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/94721-mtu-limit-test-change-your-connections-mtu-limit.html

Go to cmd.exe

enter / type ping google.com -f -l 1472

Change by 1 up / down and find maximum number / size YOUR router can ping.

For me it was 1474. Then for MTU it has a 28 bit header, so your MTU = this number + 28.

Hence for my router BT hub 5 UK = 1474 (test) + 28 gives optimum MTU = 1492.

If you put in the lower number it will also work on Ps4, but your bandwidth on Ps4 will be down a small amount

Thanks for this too!

Doesn't work for me. Oh well...

This is ok and I see other places saying to add 28, but 1474 + 28 = 1502, not 1492. I think for some people just using that first test number is probably better. Otherwise they may end up at the same result they're already currently at. I don't know though since I know nothing about what an MTU even is =)

I also got lower ping results using a little bit lower numbers. Wouldn't the lower ping times be better, or is that not the case here?

Instead of pinging Google, you should find some PSN server your console connects to. It's a bit tricky part and having a router with administration log helps a lot. I switched on my PS4 and immediatelly looked into the log, found the local IP of my console and some servers it established connection with. One of them was Akamai server (content provider for Sony) located in Switzerland (it'd be best to test more PSN servers too but I'm not going to do that now). I used that server instead of Google to be sure of the MTU value. It may or may not vary from Google, depends on your provider and a numer of things (MTU route). Also remember not to spam those servers too much with your measurements. Once to get unfragmented packets is enough.

Doesn't work here, signed into friends, store and the "activity" stuff under games on the PS4 dash worked briefly, almost immediately stopped. Thanks to this thread I DID find out my ideal MTU setting though.

Is it normal for the NAT type check to fail >50% of the time when setting up connection BTW?

Either psn is offline or I get stuck signing in..what the hell...

Edit, now I am having issues in the sense destiny doesn't recognize my expansion pass and I get locked out of dark below content...

Edit 2 : got booted again...got banjo

It worked somewhat for me, have signed into PSN, can see friends online but sill can't connect to Sony servers to verify any licenses.

Have any NEW PS4 owners had success with this? I got my highest MTU, but upon finishing my account details (sharing and friends stuff), I get "an error occured during communication with the server" Then it backs out and I have to re-enter my U/P.

Sigh, I at least hope the hackers found what they're looking for, which is probably their long lost dads.

Yea same here. Most of the games showing as locked.

Did you guys not activate/set your device to primary? I can play even my PS+ games just fine. Being offline shouldn't keep you from games (though online play will probably still not work, like Destiny)

heh... my MTU was set too high by 10... now I know why websites took so long to begin to load on my PC with this router. Many thanks.
Will try with my PS4 now.

MTU 1464 seems to be the best setting for me. Should I set the same value across all my devices (PC, smartphone, consoles etc.)?

I've been using MTU 1500 for a long time and I didn't have any problems...

Not working out for me.

I feel terrible for anyone who got a PS4 on the 25th and is aching to play it, but I guess I can find something else to do.

I get a maintenance message when I try to log in with my PS4, doesn't matter which MTU it's set to.

Though yesterday it was just connected forever with no result, so that's something I guess.

This worked for me using the MTU + 28 method but I can't access the store obviously. Thanks for posting these tips.

Lowering MTU causes packet fragmentation in which data sent over the internet is fragmented into multiple parts which certain applications (espeicially real-time applications such as online games and voice chat) do not work well especially since packet fragmentation adds overhead to the overall connection and taxes your router more due to extra work it has due to the increase in packets... Some routers (especially low-end cheap routers) may not handle packet fragmentation optimally.

Changing MTU might be having no effect for some, asking those to restart their PS4 after changing the settings furthers the misconception that it is a fix as complete shutting down PS4 clears the network stack (aka network information that might be outdated/expired causing connections/logins to fail)

TL;DR
This "fix" might cause more problems, completely turn off your PS4 wait a minute then turn it back on to see if you can login before attempting this "fix".

As a CCNA guy, I find this amusing and laughable. For all the people who change it, once things normalize, make sure you set it back to default.

Well, obviously. I'm not sure how much of a fix it is anyway considering most of the PSN services are still down. I haven't tried playing anything online yet but its cool if people can get it to work.

The core, distribution and access portion of PSN obviously have tweaked MTU sizes for pure reachability needs. I'm guessing the service depending on packet sizes uses a higher MTU for their MPLS. Anyways, cool if it works but it is bubble gum and scotch tape.

Well, I changed mine from 1500 to 1492 (optimal setting for DSL/PPPoE connections).

Why would that hurt? Less fragmentation.

I have two different accounts on same console, one primary and one secondary. Both have same issue. Restoring licences doesn't work unfortunately. It comes to 64 of 65. On the last one it gives error.

Still says servers are undergoing maintenance

Yep and cant restore licenses or activate/deactivate primary accounts so all the apps dont work, like Netflix,IGN etc etc...they all have the locks on the icon...like someone said,I briefly saw the overview for my games a few seconds, then it disappeared...Destiny doesnt work either...the only thing I can play on the PS4 right now is Far Cry 4.
