Best Mecha Ever.

My favorite episode so far. The bait and switch was well done.

What are people missing exactly?
When you're done patting yourself on the back, feel free to enlighten us. It doesn't help that the official sub leaves out some pretty important details though. Thanks Funi!
Well, what people miss depends on the individual. That's why it's so good to share theories about this show, you fill in the blanks for each other.

One thing many people miss though is
that the wife was indeed cheating, only she did it after her husband grew cold and suspicious of her and she was regretful
. And the detail DiscoShark mentioned about Machii "the gold digger" really being another person. Void vs reincarnation also hold a different meaning to heaven vs hell.

Another less talked about detail is the way the darts seem "guided by fate". They hurt each other without meaning to, which might be a metaphor. The places they hit seem to mirror things they've done to each other throughout their relationship.

Takashi > Machiko's shoulder = Grabbed it to ask her out, maybe?
Machiko > Takashi's lungs? = Took his breath away?
Missing a series of darts = The normal, uneventful period of their relationship?
Takashi > Machiko's lips = A verbal dispute after he hears the rumor?
Machiko > Takashi's eyes = She starts hiding things from him?
Takashi > Machiko's stomach = He gets her pregnant?
Machiko (with Takashi's influence) > Takashi's heart = Takashi's coldness makes her break his heart? Alternatively:
They both had a hand in the accident leading to their deaths.

I dropped it after watching the OP.
I'm not sure you deserve this show. But the OP is nothing like this episode, at least.

This episode proves why the show needs more actual Pokemon villains instead of human villains.

Malamar and gang made this episode by simply showing how plain evil they actually are.

Not misunderstood.

Not mind controlled.

Not commanded by a bad trainer or villain.

This is their own will.

They want to ruin the world.

And they are willing to trap you and laugh right in your face as they do so.

Its such a breath of fresh air compared to how the show never actually does this with any other Pokemon since Mewtwo.

Absolutely can't wait for them to return again.

I also liked the scene between James, whose always secretly been one of the best characters when he gets solo spotlight, and his Inkay.

That bond between the two was so heartwarming when James caught Inkay after being tackled and feeding him his favorite food.

Many people thought this was the worst episode in the series :p If you enjoyed that, the rest of the show has a high chance of blowing your mind. Hurry up and finish the series so you can vote for it in AOTY 2014 thread!

Episode 6 was by far the worst.

Edit:Of the first half. The cloud episode was the worst in both seasons.

Shugo Chara 1-3

Oh boy, it feels like ages since I took on a non-Precure magical girl show, and this was one that was in the back of my mind for some time for all the wrong reasons I can't remember.

But everyone has eggs, and someone wants our main girl's eggs because they might be the Embryo. There's some double meaning shit going on. The Shugo Charas basically being alternative selves for some people.

And the Charas will make their partner super good based on what attribute the Charas represent... like Sports.

This show sort of feels like it might have MotW, but so far, only one of them really was a X Egg encounter. The others was against mysterious hot guy, so maybe there's some hope for mixing up different types of episodic encounters with the boogie men wanting to scramble some girl's eggs.

The intensity that Yuasa injects into these matches is crazy. I like that it all occurs in mental and abstract form so that the players aren't acting out of character at the tables.

Pretty meh episode. There was an obvious drop in animation quality. There were obvious allusions to how we're already zombies living out our days that has been done to death in other zombie works. The jokes didn't do much for me. Episode could have been better if they spent more time focused on fleeing from zombies rather than the day in the life a zombie but I suppose that has also been done to death.

What did people not like about it? I thought it was okay. Only when Hawaii Yankee came out did it sell the episode for me.

Kaiji S1 and S2

Ok, this is a show where it's final arc is like 15-16 episodes of a dude sitting at a pachinko machine. And for some reason it probably is going to sit comfortably in my top 10 anime ever...possibly top 5. What the hell.

This is a show that is equal parts ridiculous and brilliant in nearly all aspects. The story, the characters, the writing all of it. Between the hammy narrator and the oppressive sense of dread the characters feel going into the various games, its a very emotional ride and unlike other shows which try these exaggerated emotions, it never comes off as comical or mood-ruining to me (your mileage may vary). Bonus points for being able to achieve this with some odd looking characters.

Most of the fun of this series are the games. They are really basic games of chance with only a few rules. They are also very clever and depend on psychology as well as strategy. It is interesting to think about how you would play certain situations instead of Kaiji, as well as trying to figure out what "the plan" is, which in typical fashion they never tell you, save one time, until the moment it happens.

Add in a OST which sets the mood very nicely and you have a very good package.

Of course this series isn't perfect. This is one of those series that definitely benefits from a marathon watch. This show loves its cliffhangers, and episode by episode they are raising the stakes and adding layers to an already absurd game, so the ways both the protagonists and antagonists deal with these situations can get convoluted to say the least. Also, there are more than it's fair share of long-winded exposition scenes, so it may turn off some viewers.

This was recommended by a friend, I was skeptical, and ended up greatly enjoying it. Don't let the pointy noses fool you.

PS: Hyoudou is probably the creepiest motherfucker I have ever seen in anime. Dude is nuts.

Glad someone watched this, it's one of my all time faves too. You should give Akagi a try as well, same author/studio combo. It's about Mahjong only, and I don't think it was as interesting as Kaiji, but still worth a watch.

I'll always be sad that a S3 for Kaiji will probably never happen.

Its for the better.. the plot already resolved, the next material is kicking the dead horse and I think its horrible fit for tv anime.

I'd rather get a season of Gambling Emperor Zero than a third season of Kaiji, frankly, especially since Kaiji after what S2 covers goes back to treading Fukumoto's old territory of mahjong.

Also, if you liked Kaiji, you should check out One Outs. It's from the same director as Kaiji/Akagi - different manga author, but a similar intense mind-game approach with baseball as the game in question.

Hmm, interesting. Might have to give Zero a shot then.
I would love a Strongest Man Kurosawa adaptation too.

I may have brought this up before but it's crazy how contiguous events are in this show so far. Usually you hit some sort of break where days or weeks might pass off screen but this is just one event after another, each leading into the next episode. It's almost exhausting but does create a sense of empathy with the cast who are going through the same thing.

Preview for episode 15 is one of the best previews I've ever seen too. Holy shit.

Rolling Girls ep 1

Wow, that was really awesome. Animation was great, i dig the art. Also, dat OP insert and ED song were both terrific. I went and googled the titles, and turns out they are covers of some 80s pop-punk act called The Blue Hearts who apparently, according to wiki, are one of the more influential japanese rock acts of the last several decades. So, enjoyable first ep and also new music discovery! Really liking this!

Here's the original version of the insert song in the OP

Here's the original version of the ED song

Koufuku Graffiti ep 1

That was a lot better than I thought it would be. Feels are warm and fluffy, and the two girls are real cute. Also the cheap heartstrings pull, and it worked. Found it to be very un-SHAFT SHAFT. Will watch more. Also dat OP

Edit: Ah, Narag has discovered the wonders of Layzner. Layzner fucking owns. It's the most criminally underrated show from the 80s (at least by western fans)

Spice and Wolf - 7-11

I'm loving the chemistry between between Lawrence and Holo. The shepherd girl they ran into and decided to travel with doesn't seem like all she seems. Seeing that Lawrence, the main protagonist isn't the stereotypical invincible flawless main character is also a very nice change of pace.

His own greed got him wrapped up in this whole debt bullshit that could bankrupt him. Relying on credit when he could've just gotten a straight up coin exchange and been better off. Watching Holo helplessly trying to help him was heartbreaking as well.

He also seems very keen on taking advantage of other merchants and even the little shepherd girl in order to save his own hide while he justifies it by "helping" her fulfill her tailoring dream.

The story is getting very interesting and I'm almost done with season 1.

Spice and Wolf Season 1 - 13 END

Wow, that finale.

I'm a bit annoyed that everything seems to turn into a betrayalthon but I guess it's difficult to conjure up nonmerchant villains out of thin air. It keeps the plot moving and it's done well enough.

Although the show does a good job of making you care about the characters and their fates. I do sincerely hope season 2 is more about Holo instead of Lawerence getting in trouble nonstop and Holo bailing him out. I'm interested to see exactly what's up with her past and her reasons for going to the north.

Overall, this is actually turning into one of my favorite animes of all time. What chapter does the LN pick up on from where the show stopped?

Also, something something mofu.

I believe Vol. 3 is skipped and the second seasons ends at vol 5. So Vol 6 is where it continues.
