These features were taken from an interview article with the creators of the game. If something seems a bit off, its due to my translations not being 100%. Also updated from actual experience playing the game currently.

  • Life Points is the system that keeps characters alive, when you lose all life points your character can be lost or basically permadeath. Life points can be recovered but cost money, though older characters with a single life point, once you lose that, you lose the character also. So beware. Seems that also characters who will be recovering life points need rest time within the guild, so they have to be taken out of the party as they recover. There is a way to instantly recover, but it costs a lot more than the normal recovery process.
  • Age system ties into the Life Point system, the young characters have more Life Points but their stats increase during level ups are lower and less max cap for rolling stats points at start. Older characters have less life points, but their stats increase when leveling is much higher along with the initial bonus points you have to roll for at the start of the game.. Characters will not age as in other Wizardry type of titles with an age system, so everything is preset from the creation choices.
  • Players can level themselves up at anytime as long as EXP requirements are met. There is no automatic leveling or having to sleep in an inn to raise your level.
  • Sub members who are not part of the main adventuring party will gain EXP. Therefore its highly suggested to make all of your sub characters ahead of time.
  • When the main Party (PT) is eliminated its game over. There is no recovery system as in other Wizardry type of titles, Elminage being one example where you can send out another party to recover the bodies of the first.
  • There is no Thief / Rogue type of class. Skills for treasure hunting can be used for all classes if selected, allowing for people to focus more on a party selection that suits them better than always having to be forced to have a single rogue type of character in the party at all times. Though the related skills will take up a talent slot, so careful consideration needs to be made.
  • Magic will be un-usable again underwater, such as what was seen in Demon Gaze.
  • Dancer is the new class introduced to the series. Though possibly taking on the role of being one of the more important characters as its class specific abilities allows for recovery of morale. For those who plan on doing long treks through the dungeon having a dancer in the party will allow for that with its morale recovery skills. Can also use multiple items at once, which makes them highly useful for underwater dungeons where magic is unable to be deployed.
  • There are no save points in the dungeon spells to exit the dungeon quickly. There are items, but they are very expensive and highly limited in numbers. Also the randomly appearing butterfly nests can give the player a 1 time warp out of the dungeon.
  • All characters start off with 2 skill slots, from lv 13 you will gain another and keep doing so till you have 7 total. Has to do with changing classes also I think. Each time you change class you can earn another skill slot. Total is 7. So 2 from the start then +5 from the 5 allocated class changes.
  • Rare Items can be fed to the Mumic to give the player another chance at a "re-roll" of the same unique item in the future. The purpose of this is, if you are unhappy with the + stats on your Unique Item (Bishoptl's Hammer of Banning +2) then you can feed it to the Mumic if you come across it in the dungeon, allowing for another chance for it to redrop with better stats. Though its all up to chance if the stats will be better or worse. Just as with Demon Gaze you only pick up rare items once and if you sell it or discard it by accident its gone forever.

*recordings from the 360 version.

m5ENV5q.png

#1:
Q: What type of game is this?
A: Its a first person dungeon crawler, based off of the Wizardry series. The developer Experience Inc. specializes in Dungeon RPGs and has quite the long history of working on them.

#2:
Q: Im new to dungeon crawlers should I buy this game?
A: This game will be slightly harder than other dungeon crawlers, the reason being is that there is perma-death for your characters with the life point system. Though for those who want a more serious story and not filled with fanservice, this title might just be what you are looking for in an import DRPG. If you want something that has been released in the West by the same company check out "Demon Gaze". Click on the name to go to the |OT| for that game.

#3:
Q: Does this work on a non Japanese region Vita?
A: Yes Vita software is not region locked. Though any content from the JPSN is region locked by said user being required to have a JPSN account to download DLC for example. Though any content pushed out through "title updates" will be able to be received without the need of a JPSN account.

#4:
Q: Do I need to know Japanese to play this game?
A: Not exactly, but at the same time it would help or else you wouldnt know what the skill / item effects are. On top of missing out on the story. But if you just want a dungeon crawler to play by all means import away. Though just know that it will be a bit odd when making the skill choice during the story sections when you decide who to give the crystals to between the 3 factions.

#5:
Q: Any word on localization for the West?
Nothing yet currently. Though seeing how NISA has Operation Abyss now, my guess would be that "maybe" this would be the next title in their lineup after the release and sales of Op Abyss in the West. Will give them a good break between the different art styles and gameplay, so folks do not get too burned out.

#6:
Q: Does this game have any connection to other series?
A: Am not quite too sure on that asides from Charon appearing whos had fought against the Students of the Round, which were the heroes from a previous game released by Experience Inc. Asides from that not much other details are known if anything else is connected and by how much. Id like to say dont worry about it though. Other more hardcore fans have said that this title is almost like a Students of the Round 2. But do not believe anyone from Experience Inc. has confirmed or denied that. I have yet to fully go through the game myself so am unable to comment on it also.

Day 1 patch is 34mb. this should contain the extra portraits the lost chronicle artists did

JP info on the First and Second round limited story NPC character portrait DLC.
Special NPC portraits for a limited time download.

First Batch

01-22-2015 ----- 02-04-2015

Contains the NPCs from the Strangers Guild
Riu, Anna, Kyou, Gururuba, Girius

Second Batch

02-05-2015 ----- 02-18-2015

Contains NPCs from the Royal Knights, Medel Company & Dransark
Marilyth, Helga, Alm, Lyn, Dransark

There also is a bonus portrait pack done by artists from the card game series Last Chronicle which also has been promoted along side this title. Though do believe those portraits will be received via title update. Which means that you should not need a JPSN account to receive the update data which will contain these special portraits.

game also has the enemy npc and students of the round portraits too.

Looks like 4Gamer has a special DLC code to get some kind of in-game item. I guess it's just a generic code that anyone can enter on PSN (JP region of course) since it's just posted in an article on their site. The code is PLL5-CENM-72AH.

JP Wiki #1 most of the data is the X360 / PC ver but am sure will be filled out with the Vita info as more folks play

JP Wiki #2 different information also contains map data images.

^ same as my estimed predecessor : Is it announced for western release yet ? The wait is killing me.

(yes, I've read the FAQ, I was just posting for emphasis. Great work & thanks for the OT Parakeetman ! :) )

So will this gamd get a physical release out West or an Asian English version?? Interested in it, but not digital.

^ same as my estimed predecessor : Is it announced for western release yet ? The wait is killing me.

Unfortunately no announcements yet, but seeing how so far the NISA roadmap is following the one I had predicted initially, would imagine that if they did secure this title, they will announce it a while after Operation Abyss launches, to ensure they make their initial sales mark first. Will be a good break from the art style and give a more serious tone to the genre for the library they currently have with Exp Inc DRPGs.

The reason why I do believe they will not make an announcement yet, once again "if" they secured this title, is that they want to make sure they can get as many sales into Operation Abyss first. And by announcing this before the sales go through would most def hurt the sales as people will wait for this title instead just due to being more attracted to the particular art style. Rather than just buying Op Abyss since its the current new dungeon crawler.

But with that being said Id still imagine it will be a while off. Late 2015 for a potential release. Summer would be too close to the Op Abyss release, though would make for an announcement I suppose.

With that being said, what I wrote above is just a hypothetical situation with what might happen if the title was obtained and localized. So do not take this as gospel. :)

(yes, I've read the FAQ, I was just posting for emphasis. Great work & thanks for the OT Parakeetman ! :) )

Thanks! Always appreciate you stopping by to visit.

The art style for this game looks so good.

Did demon gaze get a asian release in english? in case we don't see this game over here.

Yeah the Global Edition got a release in Asia it seems which contained the Japanese and English. So basically it was the Japanese release of the Global Edition which contained both JP / ENG but for an Asia specific version do not see one on the Play Asia store. Could be no one offered to step up and shoulder the localization work / cost thats why there is no actual Asian version.

The original version did not seem to have an Asian version if the play asia site is an example to go off of.

People here have played th PC version before, right?
Can you give some advice to a new player? Things to keep in mind? Things you wish you new when you started playing?) How many lp to choose? What classes are the most useful?
Oh and how exactly does the class change work in this game?

I am waiting for the game to appear on psn. Wonder when it will happen...

Generally starts from 10 and goes till 12:00-12:30ish.

If you are new to the game would suggest you starting with characters with at least 2 LP. Then from there mess with the game and see how things go / understand how class change works / what classes you like etc. Then if you feel like it start over or start to create stronger 1 LP characters.

Reroll a lot if possible. Since those extra points do help.

In regards to a party build you most def will want a pretty basic setup from start, fighter, healer, knight, mage, etc. Most def a knight though as taunting enemies and being able to actually take the damage is important in this title. As there will be times without a knight some enemies can pretty much 1 shot most other classes due to the damage output. A mage will be necessary as there are some enemies who are physical resistant.

This game buffs / debuffs are very important so keep that in mind.

Absolutely love the art of this game, hope we will get a localization soon.

Experience should really bring their games to Steam, I'm sure they would sell pretty good there. (Most of their games have PC versions right?)

Their PC version are super expensive according to Parakeet. I think he was saying close to 80 us for one so not sure they would be super sellers on steam. Also they don't localize themselves so it would be XSeed getting them put up there.

They do exist, but the thing is no one has bothered to pick up the licenses. Thing is they do not have the resources nor manpower to do it themselves and if anyone was going to "attempt" to do said titles would pretty much be on their own for the most part. Not a lot of folks out there can actually do that on top of paying for the licensing. So if the big boys have not touched it, chances are might not happen.

I would guess they really wouldn't want them undercutting the jpn pricing too much either. At least not in a way where the local market could buy the lower priced ones instead.

There is that possibility too.

Its an issue that even exists for like next gen titles that are localized for other regions and also have a PC version. Though other companies that are not JP first type of titles have the option to fully rip out the JP text so there is no way to restore it, short of someone actually going and redoing all the text and try to create a patch that would put it all back into the game itself. Do not think anyone would actually go through that amount of trouble, since Exp Inc is a pretty niche company on its own and it knows that. Which is why its titles are pretty much tailored for its fans and their general run of physical copies are low as they have a good idea of what kind of numbers to expect with sales and keep things in the positive by being smart about resource usage.

NISA is in a good spot currently considering their 2 titles that they have from Exp are console exclusive. So even if someone did get a PC version of something it would not effect their sales with Demon Gaze + Operation Abyss.

Seeing how the official site is not back alive yet, will turn in for the night. Wanted to try to add in some other stuff, but thats not going to happen any time soon it seems lol

Will update later in the evening.

For those that have any questions feel free to leave them here and will get you sorted out when am up and about.

I really fucking want this, after getting hooked on the dungeon crawaling gameplay from Demon Gaze, I want more.

This one really has my interest moreso than Tokyo Abyss

I really fucking want this, after getting hooked on the dungeon crawaling gameplay from Demon Gaze, I want more.

One thing that Im almost certain people will enjoy is the class change system, since depending on how much time you spend with it, you can really custom tailor your characters. By leveling up main class, class changing, level till you obtain skills you want from said class, change to another class, level up etc. then finally switch back to the main class you want to stay as and then equip the skills learned from the other classes to help support the main one.

Since you have a limited amount of class changes its not really suggested to do it multiple times without thinking.

So for some folks might be a bit of experimentation with that and what they want for their party / class combinations.

Also permadeath adds way more tension to combat and makes you care a lot more about your custom tailored characters as if you lose them its all that time and effort gone with it when that LP goes to 0 lol

This is the version I really hope comes out here. I liked Demon Gaze and I'm excited for Operation Abyss. I just hope NISA picks it up. I'll keep lurking in the thread to watch impressions of the Vita version. They should be about the same, right?

The Vita version just has some differences from the PC / Xbox one. Such as endgame contents and it has a few more of the wanted monster types I do believe. But for the most part everything else should be the same as the X360 / PC versions.

So the US version came first then. I was hoping to import in case the US version doesn't happen.

With how much interest there is behind this title once again Id really like to strongly say that NISA has it locked in and just does not want to announce it till they sell through their expected numbers for Op Abyss.

So would keep hopes high, just the wait will be long.

------

Kinda funny how while I have the game, have not had the time to open it at all yet. :/
*These posters are normally something that is hard to come by. Its too bad was unable to get my hands on the 360 version poster as that one was really nice.

Well, we got US release of Demon Gaze in April 2014, Operation Abyss in April 2015, so Sword City in April 2016?

Though for those who want a more serious story and not filled with fanservice, this title might just be what you are looking for in an import DRPG.

Speaking of which, how is the story in Operation Abyss compared to Demon Gaze? The trailers I've seen seem to have a more serious tone.

Imo 2015 is too optimistic :( i hope to be wrong.

Not really, as would waste the momentum otherwise. Plus more importantly screw up things with Operation Babel as that would fall into 2016 and the last thing they would want to do is push it even further back into 2016.

Considering that game comes out here in Japan in April hence the thought of Op B. Almost 9 months since the release of Op A. in Japan till the release of the US version in April this year.

Yeah story in general has a more serious tone. Not as much humor in it. Should be an enjoyable experience overall I think.

I'm going to wait for a US release, because I can't imagine enjoying the game without being able to read any of it, but man do I love this artwork. It's so good.

Amiami shipped a little later than I hoped, but it might still arrive this weekend since USPS seems to deliver on Sundays now for priority packages. The long wait is finally almost over.

After watching the video, this game seems like it would be too difficult to understand without a localisation....I guess I'll play through Demon Gaze and Operation Abyss in the near future and cross my fingers on that. I mean...Brandish just happened, who knows?

subbed anyway, the art for this game looks fantastic.

Once again made the mistake of ordering another item with my AmiAmi order for this game.
Should have it by the end of the month.

I did the same thing but realized it in time and had them split the order. The other item is just a $10 small book that comes out on the 30th I think, so I'll basically be paying double for it now having to ship it separately, but I didn't want to wait for this game :<

Great as always Para. One day I'll buy you pitcher of beer. :)

Anyway, importing.

haha thanks, hope you enjoy the title!

you would be surprised that we have some folks that play drpgs without much japanese knowledge. :) though yes its good that you guys in the west will be getting operation abyss in a few months so hopefully that will hold folks over for a while

I want to think April 2016 release for the West, but that'd be over a year after the Vita version, when Operation Abyss gap is only eight months.

Oh yeah, does the Vita release come with an instruction manual? I know Exp's games usually (always?) do, but I don't want to wait for mine to show up to find out, haha.

I've played a few non localised games before...stuff that was pretty light on menus. I'm all for taking a stab at that kind of thing, but wouldn't assigning skill points etc be a real challenge with this game(if you can't read any Japanese)?

Knowing a little bit definitely goes a long way, but with patience and using a wiki with Google translate, I think it'd be possible to make it through the entire game with no Japanese knowledge. You could download the PC version trial and give that a try and see if it would be feasible.

its not exactly a manual with multiple pages but there is a foldout with the game.

thankfully this game does not use skill points, but the sections where you decide which skill to take when you trade in crystals then yeah. id have to look at the full list and see how many skills there are
