Persona 5 New Trailer

Again, I did that to express how much better P5 looks right now. You're taking that as face value when all I'm saying is that I think Atlus delivers more than SE.

I don't even know what you're trying to argue at this point. All I was saying that even though P5 looks like the better game and Atlus has been more competent than SE, FFXV is gonna do just fine.

All I'm saying is we really can't say for certain P5 will be a better game than FFXV without playing either of them. If all you are saying is P5 LOOKS better based on trailers I can understand that.

But I want to run after those chariot penises to engage in an intense action-packed conflict---

I mean, I guess. But they could always take the easy way out and only have the easy ones to animate on the map (animating a floating animation for Pyro Jack is easier than modeling and animating something else).

Also, yeah, I can see that they won't use shadows, but will they ditch them completely? (The enemies, not the "true self"). I don't know...

It's so weird, I hope Famitsu asks some decent stuff and we get to know more about that.

I too enjoy beating Mara in furious combat.
;)

It is all very weird. I'd like to think a simpler explanation would be them returning to their SMT roots a bit, especially with the characters all running around with guns as well.

Famitsu is still a week away right? Will be fun to see what clues and answers we get to some of this.

I'm pretty comfortable saying it'll more than likely be better right now. It certainly looks the part. SE hasn't shown me they can design a good single player console RPG in ages. Not one I can remember off the top of my head, anyway.

Are there any other trailer breakdowns similar to the ones that Gametrailers and IGN did? I cannot get enough of this fucking thing.

GameXplain had one thrown together too, but it wasn't nearly as good. They were putting out false info (claimed that this game was running on Gamebyro as an example).

That part is definitely the most ambiguous and they place enough material in the trailer to lend credence to both.

The Yellow eyes, the mask imagery composed of blood, and the contorted facial features certainly hone in on demonic/shadow origins.

During the gameplay, we see the MC with a normal mask on, but with every step he takes in a run, landing after a jump, and moving from cover to cover we see splashes of blood streak out from under his feet.

So perhaps this transformation sequence is his first one, and he looks particularly wild/wicked because he is reveling in his new power and enjoys it. It could be his Persona taking on his own human form to demonstrate how he is truly him as well, and the blood mask is the occult version of a normal mask.

The blood is key in all of this. The game's visual theme is red. I'd bet on it.

Perhaps it is none of that and something else all together. It'll be fun to find out. :)

You're probably on to something with that.
I didn't even notice the blood splatters

You know, it could actually be both. The protag is chained up in the Velvet Room at some point in the trailer, right? He could be there because the shadow took over his real body, effectively trading places with the MC in his subconscious.

Lisa was in Katakana though.
I don't see her being "Anne" or even "An".

It could easily be like Junko.

Katakana doesn't really mean anything. There are a lot of grannies in Japan that use Katakana for obviously Japanese names, for example, lol. There's a historical reason but just going by the fact it's written in hiragana/kanji vs katakana isn't a good indication of origin.

杏 can definitely be "An" though as it's used in the name "Anna" 杏奈 or 杏南

The fact that it's only April 11th, and MC and his friends are already planning heists, hanging out with Morgana, going to dungeons, makes me wonder if they already had their Personas and know about Demons before the game's story starts. Going off the slight chance the game starts April 11th, when it could probably start April 5 or something and MC is already used to this stuff.

Also MC's daytime Persona looks so meek and cautious yet he goes to a juvenile school. I wonder what he did that made him go there.
Yeah I was wondering about that too. Did he start the game off as a great thief already? If not, did he start off as a newbie? How did he get involved in this? What makes him so special that he gets made the leader?

OK I hate to sound like a troll here, but I gotta ask:

Can we expect a major graphics bump for the PS4 version?

The gameplay graphics in that trailer look straight outta PS3, which is a HELL of a let down.

I was expecting AT LEAST a noticable bump in graphics for the PS4 version.

I assume this footage is PS3 and maybe we haven't seen the PS4 version yet. Would that be correct?

So does anyone think that the dungeons of this game are going to take place in the "real world"?
P3 & 4 both have a seperate shadow world that the team goes into to take down their objectives. But with the heists in P5, the first few scenes of the trailer showing a place where real people inhabit it, and what seems like call backs to earlier Persona games, it seems like they're hinting at there being no separate realm this time around.

the struggle in japan is real...

I hear they don't even have PS4 dev kits yet

Yeah. I think there's a simple answer, but I don't know if it is "returning to the roots"...

hmm...

Yeah, I'd like that too.

I remember in the FFXV TGS thread we were kinda doing that in the thread itself. I thought it would happen here too, but apparently discussing how much people dislike SE is more important...

Also, a few hours ago someone posted this on Twitter (not sure if it was already posted here):

I wouldn't expect anything substantial aside from a resolution, lighting and texture bump.

There's definitely a separate realm. Look at the end of the second teaser trailer for Persona 5, and then there are moments during this one like the protagonist presumably turning into his Persona in the middle of a crowd, at the beginning. It might be that the line between "real world" and "Shadow world" is a bit more ambiguous, this time around.

But "Anne" would be in Katakana, cause "An" does not sound the same.
I'm just saying that people making the jump to "Anne" are making big assumptions, when "Anzu" is likely the most valid interpretation, with no additional work involved.
"An" is ok too, but it's a less common name.

It's very likely not "Anne" though.
"Risa" vs "Lisa" is not the same situation at all.

Looks like an evolution of what we got from P3 and P4, not to say that's bad. If it's more P3 and P4 gameplay, with new additions, awesome. It's the sneaking and jumping off chandeliers that has me intrigued. Yeah SE's recent output has been lacking but I like the fact that they are not afraid to experiment. FFXIII for as much as people hated it wasn't terrible. FFXIII-2 fixed many of it's problems and Lightning Returns had a pretty awesome battle system.

Now THAT would be an especially cool twist on things. I hadn't even thought of that.

Have you...played Persona/SMT games before? Atlus is not exactly known for technically superior graphics engines. Expecting anything more than an average graphics experience is probably setting your sights too high. That being said, aesthetically Persona Team is tops.

I do wonder why they scrapped using Gamebryo after Catherine though. Does Gamebryo require a license fee per copy sold? Otherwise it seems silly to spend so much time creating an equivalent graphics engine when they could instead focus on the content.

We'll get a version that's 1080p and maybe 60fps. These are the graphics though, honestly. It's not about the Bandwith of the hardware, but the Bandwith of Atlus. Their strength is in art direction and that's very much the case here.

P3 and P4 could've looked better on PS2. It's just not about that for them.

It's Atlus and it's Persona. I don't know what kind of graphics boost you expect? It might look a little bit cleaner on the PS4 version but there probably isn't going to be a drastic change. I think it looks fantastic especially coming from the PS2 based previous games

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Ken Watanabe's daughter is an example of this though, lol. She uses "杏” pronounced アン/あん but spelled as "Anne" in English.

Is the ice skating motif just 'cuz or does it tie into story somehow?

I noticed that in the closeup shot of the girl spinning, it's raining. Which might (kinda) explain why they are sliding around. It's slippery when it rains. So, maybe weather plays into this.

Or it could just be because it looks cool.

It's all about that Japanese pride brah. Gotta roll with a proprietary engine to prove your worth until you start losing billions like Capcom and Square.

Huh, I'm so confused now.

The romanization of アン/あん is going to be An, but Anne is most commonly used because English speakers would see "an" as an article and Anne is a name also used by English speaking countries.

Another example would be 譲 (じょう, Jō). Instead of Jō, the name would be romanized as Joe.

Don't expect too much of a difference, maybe resolution (from 720 to 1080) and that will be it, they might not even improve framerate so I suppose it'll run at 30fps on both consoles.

Edit: Damn! First post of the page. Act cool...

I haven't seen many people bring up the "You Are Slave, Want Emancipation?" line from the Persona 5 reveal trailer in this thread. I think it's a given at this point that the line's from the Phantom, aka the main character. Probably relates to the main characters' motivations which consists of liberating people from the shackles of society or a higher power.

Assuming you can use the engine a lot, it can be a great money saver in the long run.

Capcom's MT Framework is a great example of this. SE's crystal tools is not.

I feel like maybe we should just wait until new info comes out instead of trying to figure out if/how she's foreign since there's no way to know until more info comes out lol

That said, her being a foreigner would make sense given the game's (apparent) themes.
