13 years and counting. seems like they don't care that much.
To be fair, the Xbox division was on the chopping block prior to the Xbone's launch. They won't abandon their highest profile consumer product mid-generation. Building to the Xbone was Microsoft's long game plan - the Xbone was supposed to make all the losses worthwhile. Whether or not they're keen to go another round after the Xbone effectively erased 10 years of brand-building and handed this gen to Sony on a silver platter, who knows. This was the end of their road-map.

In europe? Nope.

TR is popular here, but not in a huge way. Way more series that are more popular
fifa

I didn't say TR was the most popular IP in EU, I said EU is its most popular territory. Of course its not close the big IPs like FIFA & Gran Turismo.

I know. I just added fifa because i guess it's the only franchise apart from gta and cod that i can see becoming system sellers if they were exclusive.

Also, people asume tr is coming to ps4 anyway

There's that but Uncharted helped carve a userbase that TR could sell to, another example is Rayman Legends(?) selling better on WiiU (iirc) because Super Mario U helped carve that particular userbase at launch.

That's more of a demographics thing though, Rayman appeals more to the Wii U demographic, conversely a game like CoD appeals more to the Xbox demographic.

26% more PS4s is a larger gap than I was expecting. If Sony can keep this up against a cheaper Xbox throughtout february, Microsoft is going to have a tough time winning in NA.

They've been having a tough time winning anywhere for the past year. It took a $150 price drop, two bundled games, and two big name exclusives to finally beat Sony in NA. They're doing the right thing with all these cuts, the only question is how sustainable it is.

I think Tomb Raider was an attempt to combat Uncharted 4, it seems pretty obvious to me. It's also pretty clear to me that SE felt UC4 was in direct competition with TR, they must have felt that PS4 gamers would pick UC4 over TR so decided why not get a cash injection and sacrifice what they thought would be poor sales? It's a EU target and could work very well, especially in the UK. I recall Tomb Raider selling really well in UK, much more than Uncharted and think it was something crazy like Tomb Raider sales in UK pretty close to NA.

The only 3 exclusives coming to mind which sell consoles of note for Sony and Microsoft are Gears, Halo and GT however none have real universal appeal, Gears and Halo will push sales in NA while GT will move hardware in EU. Multiplatform as always are much more important, being on more than one system does not matter, they move systems.

That's why I feel a game like Battlefront will be so important this year, it's easily going to outsell any exclusive game this year so the question is who got the co-marketing deal for that game? I've got to guess Microsoft, that will move more consoles for MS than Quantam Break, Forza etc could ever dream of.

MS can easily beat Sony in NA but they don't stand a chance in EU and Japan, its been the case since the consoles released over a year ago.

PS4 ~193k
XB1 ~153k
WiU ~64k
360 ~40k
PS3 ~35k
Wii ~8k

Pretty poor month all around tbh. Out of curiosity, how do Nov/Dec numbers from 2014 compare to past gen years? Because these January numbers seem lower than last gen numbers around the same time period of release?

FWIW, PS4 has been pretty consistent sitting at 7th on Amazon's best sellers list for videogames. Xone hovering around 16th. The standings have been pretty consistent over the last month and a half.

You forgot God of War, which does pretty well on both territories. although I agree with your general point, Uncharted/The Last of Us/Gran Turismo do better outside of NA, & vice verse for Halo/Gears. The rest of the IPs Sony & Microsoft own don't do that well, Forza Motorsports & Infamous barely sell 2 million.

Xbox One did really well in the holidays, doing over 2.5m. Compared to the 360 at the same point in time (2006), that did over 1.6m.

So the XB1 went from doing >2.5m over the holidays to doing 153k in January.
360 went from doing >1.6m over the holidays to doing 294k in January.

PS4 also did good over the holidays, doing over 1.8m. Compared to the PS3 at the same point in time (2007), that did over 1.2m.

So the PS4 went from doing >1.8m over the holidays to doing 193k in January.
PS3 went from doing >1.2m over the holidays to doing 269k in January.

Well Sony IPs did better in the EU thanks to user base .
But i can see them doing better this gen in NA compare to before .

How can MS "easily" beat Sony in NA? They are still behind even after their holiday fire sale and are now selling worse despite having the cheaper console.

That tells me Sony could easily beat MS if they decided to price match. It's on MS to make sure the XB1 is cheaper, and that's not easy on them.

Really impressed with how well software seems to be selling on the X1. X1 winning the software side of things, it feels like. Outselling PS4 on NBA2K15 is really impressive.

Comparatively weak January for hardware though. Wonder what happened.

So, is this going to be Sony until the Holiday season?

Microsoft should bundle TR with every Xbone from its release until the end of the year, I'll be pissed if it bombs & Square cans the franchise.

Most of TR's sales came from Europe on PS3, it's a pretty big franchise in EU, the only question is whether its big enough that people would buy a console for it.

I highly doubt it. One big problems is that almost everyone assumes it will be coming to PS4.

How long do you think people will wait to play TR if they really want to when the console it's on will be on sale and will be the cheapest way to get the game if you don't own a next gen system yet?

For sure. US and maybe UK are the only markeds Microsoft have any real chance of winning this generation.

I just thought the race would be closer in NA this year than it seems to be. Right now Xbox is losing against its direct competitor, in its primary marked, at a lower price point. Microsoft PR can spin the numbers all day, but that still has to sting.

In Europe? For a long time. Not to mention they will have Uncharted.

At the end of the day MS isn't going to win the US or UK. Sony hasn't even used a price cut yet. They are outselling a $350 Xbone, and the they have two big exclusives coming in the next two months and as the lead continues to grow, more and more people will buy the one their friends have. MS will probably try another fire sale around the hollidays, but at the end of the day, they won't be able to beat the PS4 in any territory when the gen has wrapped up.

It did raise back in price for 12 days. Pretty big no-no. A majority of the Xbox One's sales definitely came from the remaining 16 days.

If you think TR will move any significant amount of hardware in europe, even if it is 100€ cheaper than PS4 you have no idea of the european market, especially with UC4 coming in the similiar time frame.
MS has lost the mindshare fight and they will pay for it the rest of this gen. They always had it hard here in europe but this time they fucked up big time and XB1 is perceived as the lesser console with NSA support.

Anecdotal story:
A few days ago main german news had a section about samsung smart TVs recording every word, they ended the segment showing a XB1 with kinect talking about how other devices like microsofts XB1 also record stuff.

Yeah good luck selling that.

Yeah, as I said in my other post, february will give us a better picture of how the early months of the year are going to pan out sales wise. Considering Sony is probably going to give the ps4 a permanent pricedrop this year, I don't think Microsofts chances of actually winning (they can definitely still have fine sales) are looking good overall.

PS4 has The Order in February, Bloodborne in March, and MLB in April, all of which will be able to move some consoles imo. The Xbox One has nothing really significant in that time frame, so I really don't see those sales changing any time soon, and I don't see what Microsoft could do in terms of pricing either.

So yeah, see you all in September (or November) for some challenge.

It's more than PS4 was supply constrained in December 2013 and so some people had to wait January to get it

yes, sorry - that's what I meant but totally didn't say lol

The effect if the supply constraint distorted last years figures so whilst '25% is better than 100%' it's not a fair comparison

Yay for Dying Light! Even though not much competition still impressive.

Also PS4 reigns again. Prob didn't help that MSFT brought X1 price back up momentarily..

Nah bro, Xbox will win March due to ScreamRide.

Yes, of course I forgot that AAA exclusive.

That and Lococycle make it a formidable opponent to the onslaught of The Order: 1886, Bloodborne and MLB 15.

I think Microsoft will easily take every month going forward - it's just too much to handle.

Meanwhile, in the reality we all occupy, this will be Microsoft until November at best.

The "console war" doesn't feel like it did last gen to me. I remember arguing with my friends in high school that the PS3 as better, they were fools for having a 360, and they the opposite. Maybe it's because 90% of my online time is on GAF that doesn't tolerate that nonsense, maybe it's because the console I own is the top dog this go around, maybe it's because I'm older and I just don't care to see it anymore.

All I care about is the industry doing well. I don't want consoles to go away, so to see how well both of the new consoles around are selling, despite hardware sales being down overall, is nice.

If MS can keep the gaps for each month relatively small like this month, I think they're good until the holidays.

Why is physical software an indicator of anything when you can now purchase items digitally (a way that is not tracked)

That should mean softwares ales are greater than reported no?

yes, I'm sure Sony have nothing coming out that might shift units and create bigger gaps in the mean-time...

Everyone just assumes that Sony exists in a vacuum where they remain completely static and do absolutely nothing to increase sales while Microsoft will open wormholes to try and increase marketshare.

I feel like if there's one thing we all can agree on is that console gaming is far from dead.

Congrats to both MS and Sony, awesome numbers.
