New Nintendo 3DS & New Nintendo 3DS XL Launch Thread

Thanks for the replies. I guess I just kind of find it odd that a system was released without any games. Its like if the PS4 just upscaled PS3 games when it first launched. Not knocking the system, i'm stoked to play MH and MM but it just seems strange.
It's an incremental upgrade, not a whole new system. There are two games released today that take advantage of it, albeit in a minor way.

I have an OG 3DS and have found it very uncomfortable to play with. I really want to play MH4U, but the demo on my current 3DS was a miserable experience. Is the XL a lot more comfortable for people with larger hands?

I assume you were doing the claw. If so yes, the new XL will be more comfortable for MH. The new regular 3DS would be more comfortable as well.

It's more like if the PS3 slim played PS3 games...and MAYBE a few slim-only releases.

Wow okay I just got my second 4U LE.

Couple things:

First of all there's no room for wobble so there's no left/right wobble as described here.
Secondly the snap mechanism sounds entirely different. It's like this silent thunk, while on the other one (and on my old XL) it's a very distinct clicking noise.
And finally there's also less up and down wobble but not by much. My old XL had the most of that.

I assume all three differences are related to the wiggle room between the hinges.

Also one question: if I format the system memory, will it mess with the pre-installed MH4U?

It will nuke the installation, but if you're doing a system transfer, make sure that you haven't set up your NNID on it yet, so that the license transfers to the NNID on your old 3DS and you'll be able to re-download the game.

Yep same here with the second Majora's Mask XL I just received. It still has a small gap beside the hinges so I can still move it about 1mm but it won't slide around on its own just by tilting the system.

Seems there is some difference in build quality between systems.

What would happen if I removed the sd card before formatting?

A friend of mine got two Majora's Mask 3DS systems this morning. I was 2nd in line at the Target I went to and nothing.

Oh well. The black one is nice. The Target I went to was sold out of all units within the hour as were several others (I went shopping just in case I could find a MM).

Also, does anyone else have glue coming out from the bottom screen? WTF...

Abd put in another as card? Then you will still lose the pre-installed game

No, just remove it, format the system memory and then put it back again. I'd like to return it to stock settings basically without name/birthday/date/time and all that.

3 dead pixels. Awesome. Fucking piece of shit.
I have a single stuck parallax barrier pixel... Directly in the middle of the top screen. When I have 3D enabled, it "floats" over the image. Neat, but going to exchange the system next week.

Performing a system transfer to will override all those settings anyway. There is no need to reset to defaults.

There is no reason to format the SD card or system memory. The card will get wiped during the transfer process, and the system memory is overwritten with the source system.

I don't think it functions without an SD card. You can edit all those settings in the settings

Wow you guys are unlucky. I've never had a dead pixel.

For people in the same boat as me who no longer have a 3DS to transfer digital purchases from - don't call 1 800 255 3700. All you'll get is a recorded message telling you they're too busy to take your call.

Call 855 703 8783. I got helped almost immediately there.

Picked one up at Walmart around midnight. Had about 5 in stock around 11:30 lol. Now I have to fight for customer service to transfer my content since I sold my 3DS a while ago.

Hmm have others had luck with that? I sold my old 3ds XL about 6 months ago and just waved the couple digital games I had 'goodbye' since I assumed I wouldn't be picking up another one. Now I'm considering a New 3ds XL - is there a chance I get my digital stuff back?

I figured I should just write this again as I just edited my post like a noob.

Does anyone else have glue coming out from their bottom screen? There's a ton of glue that's been pressed out from mine.

This is more akin to a hypothetical situation where the PS3 Slim had marginally better processing power and could load games faster than the original PS3, and make some of them run smoother. This isn't really a generational transition.

question, i'd like to get a charging cradle but i'm not sure if the system will still fit if i have a Hori clear plastic protector on it

anyone have both?

My boyfriend called nintendo and ended up getting the ID back on his new 2DS, Gamestop lied to him and said the SD card would transfer everything over when he traded in his broken one and got his new one.

Ok good to know, I'll keep that in mind if/when I pick up a new unit.

Can someone please tell me how the speakers are on the new 3DS XL?

I have the red 3DS XL, and the speakers on it turned up to the max setting are shit compared to my wife's Animal Crossing 3DS XL.

So I did not preorder this system. I have a 3DS XL that I'm looking to trade in at a gamestop to take advantage of the $100 credit towards the new one. I've called seven different gamestops in my area, each one has told me that they only have systems for preorders not for walk ins. It's also not available on their website, so they cant even place an order for me for a later date. Also, the offer for the $100 credit ends on sunday and they said they are holding preorders until monday. Looks like there is literally no way for my to take advantage of this offer, what a fucking mess.

Yup in the same boat. What a load of shit that offer is, it should be extended honestly. That might be a bad business move on their part (idk businesses whoops) but it is basically impossible to take advantage of that where I live.

After having millions of extra Wii U's sitting around in warehouses for years, Nintendo seems to have become pathologically gunshy of overproducing ANYTHING including games, amiibos, and now consoles.

And you win Valentines this year, StrikeVillain.

Picked up my new red new 3DS XL at GameStop and the game advisor was nice enough to let me do the firmware update and system transfer in store after the trade in. Everything went pretty smoothly and already having a micro SD was a huge plus. The only thing that grinds my gears is that because of how Nintendo designed the back plate to fit on the system, when tried to pull it up I heard a cracking sound and noticed a hairline fracture at the bottom where the Headphone jack is..... Nintendo!!

Just went to the store and got a metallic blue XL. Looks so nice and the super stable 3D works quite well.

Transferring the licenses and DSiware games were easy and fast.

Removing the backplate to replace the MicroSD with my old 3DS card was easy too. Can't believe people are stripping the screws. I'm not gonna defend Nintendo for making it like this, it should have been a simple lid with no needs of screws. But people must be using the wrong sized screwdriver or using too much force. The screws aren't screwed very tight at all and they don't come off! They stick to the plate, so stop when they are loose. You do have to pay attention on how to remove the backplate. You have to slightly pull/lift off the flap from the side.

I tried doing the same. Supposedly they are putting people on a waiting list on my store and still allowing trade ins for the $100 deal. I might just do that and call nintendo later to allow me to transfer my nintendo id.

Yeah, I fiddled around with the backplate before I realized there are gaps on each side to pull and separate it from the system. Pretty simple provided you have the right tool.
